A lithium-iron disulfide battery with improved high temperature performance is disclosed. The separator characteristics are deliberately selected to be compatible with the electrolyte at the intended temperature. Additional or alternative modifications can be made in the form of a scaffold or laminated structure. A preferred polymer for such separators is polyimide.

Lithium iron disulfide battery

A lithium-iron disulfide electrochemical cell design is disclosed, relying on judicious selection of the electrolyte, a thicker lithium anode and a cathode with specific characteristics selected to cooperate with the electrolyte. The resulting cell has a reduced interfacial surface area between the anode and the cathode but, surprisingly, maintains excellent high drain rate capacity.

Lithium-iron disulfide cell design

An end assembly seals a cylindrical electrochemical cell. The assembly includes a positive temperature coefficient (PTC) device and a gasket having a protrusion that cooperates with the end assembly isolates the PTC device from primary axial compression forces present in the closure assembly. In further embodiments of the present invention, the end assembly may be produced by insert molding a seal element about the terminal cover and the gasket itself has an E or F shaped cross section.
