A cooling system for an electric vehicle that includes a cooling system loop including a refrigerant, a compressor, and a heat exchanger. The cooling system loop includes a plurality of sub-loops configured to receive the refrigerant after the refrigerant exits the heat exchanger, wherein the sub-loops include a component to be cooled by the refrigerant.

Two-phase cooling system for electric vehicles

A vehicle includes a component coated with a pollutant reduction catalyst configured to remove pollutants from a flow of air over the component, a catalyst temperature sensor coupled to the component, a general temperature sensor, a vehicle speed sensor, and an active grille shutter (AGS) system having a plurality of movable grille shutters. A controller is configured to determine an efficiency of the pollutant reduction catalyst based on signals from the catalyst temperature sensor, the general temperature sensor, the vehicle speed sensor, and the AGS system.

System and method to monitor coated radiator

A thermal accumulator assembly (TAA) for a vehicle waste heat recovery system (WHRS) utilizing a two-phase coolant includes a hermetically sealed housing having a separator plate dividing an interior of the housing into a higher pressure first chamber and a lower pressure second chamber. A pressure control valve is disposed between the first and second chambers. A first inlet port is connected to the first chamber and configured to receive a first flow of coolant. A first outlet port is connected to the first chamber and configured to a second flow of liquid coolant to a heat generating component in the WHRS. A second inlet port is connected to the first chamber and configured to receive a third flow of heated coolant from the heat generating component. A second outlet port is connected to the second chamber and configured to supply a fourth flow of vapor coolant to the WHRS.

Thermal accumulator assembly

A thermal accumulator assembly (TAA) for a vehicle waste heat recovery system (WHRS) utilizing a two-phase coolant includes a hermetically sealed housing having a separator plate dividing an interior of the housing into a higher pressure first chamber and a lower pressure second chamber, and an expander generator disposed between the first and second chambers and including an expander operably coupled to a motor generator. The first chamber is configured as a reservoir for the two-phase coolant, and the expander is configured to receive a flow of vapor coolant from the first chamber to generate power via the motor generator.

An auxiliary coolant pump for circulating a coolant in a vehicle thermal system having a main coolant pump includes a housing, an impeller, a motor selectively driving the impeller, a coolant inlet configured to receive the coolant, a coolant outlet fluidly coupled to the coolant inlet, and a bypass passage fluidly coupled between the coolant inlet and the coolant outlet. When the main coolant pump is on, the auxiliary coolant pump is selectively turned off such that coolant flows through the bypass passage to reduce or eliminate restriction of the coolant flow rate in the thermal system. When the main coolant pump is off, the auxiliary coolant pump is selectively turned on such that coolant continues to flow through at least a portion of the thermal system.

A chiller system includes an intercooler configured to cool compressed charge air received from a charger, a low temperature cooling circuit fluidly coupled to the intercooler, and an air conditioner circuit circulating a refrigerant and having a primary circuit and a bypass circuit. The primary circuit includes a compressor, a condenser, and an evaporator. The bypass circuit includes a conduit that bypasses the evaporator, and a chiller shut off valve is configured to selectively prevent refrigerant from flowing through the bypass circuit. A chiller is thermally coupled to the low temperature cooling circuit and the bypass circuit. A controller is in signal communication with the chiller shut off valve. The controller is programmed to, upon receiving a signal indicating a driver has manually selected the vehicle to operate in a racing mode, open the chiller shut off valve to provide increased cooling to the intercooler and the compressed charge air.

Chiller system for an engine with a forced induction system

A chiller system includes an intercooler configured to cool compressed charge air received from a turbocharger or a supercharger; a low temperature cooling circuit fluidly coupled to the intercooler, the low temperature cooling circuit circulating a coolant to provide cooling to the intercooler and including a low temperature radiator configured to cool the first coolant; and an air conditioner circuit circulating a refrigerant and having a primary circuit and an evaporator bypass circuit. A chiller is thermally coupled to the low temperature cooling circuit and the bypass circuit. A chiller shut off valve is configured to be controlled to be selectively opened to provide refrigerant to the chiller to further cool the coolant in the low temperature cooling circuit after the coolant is cooled by the low temperature radiator, thereby providing increased cooling to the intercooler and the compressed charge air to increase engine performance.

A regenerative air conditioning system for a vehicle includes a condenser, a compressor, an evaporator subsystem, an expansion valve, and a solenoid controlled expansion valve arranged and coupled together in a direct expansion cooling circuit. The evaporator subsystem has a main evaporator and a storage evaporator. The storage evaporator has a phase change material therein surrounding refrigerant passages in the storage evaporator. The storage evaporator in a charge state when the vehicle is decelerating wherein refrigerant flows through the storage evaporator to cool the phase change material to cause it to change phases to store thermal cooling potential. The storage evaporator in a discharge state when the vehicle is stopped and an engine of the vehicle is off to cool cabin cooling air flowing across the storage evaporator by the phase change material absorbing heat from the cabin cooling air flowing across the storage evaporator.

Regenerative vehicle air conditioning system

A rechargeable battery system for a portable electronic device is provided. The system includes a battery pack having a first battery and a second battery. The battery pack is preferably configured to electrically connect one of the first and second batteries to the electronic device in a first position, but requires at least partial detachment from the electronic device and reattachment of the battery pack to the electronic device in a second position, different from the first position, to electrically connect the other of the first and second batteries to the electronic device. The system further includes at least one set of charging terminals on the battery pack for charging the first and second batteries.

The invention relates to a vapor compression refrigeration system for cooling air, particularly for use in automobiles, having a closed circuit for refrigerant fluid incorporating an expansion device in the form of an orifice tube supplying expanded refrigerant fluid to an evaporator for cooling the air, wherein the system comprises electrical heating means such as a resistive wire winding or film resistor to supply heat to the refrigerant fluid within the orifice tube, and control means for controlling the heating means so as to achieve desired mass flow rates of the expanded fluid in the evaporator. The control means may operate in response to signals from a pressure sensor downstream of the evaporator and from further sensors sensing the temperature and speed of the air to be cooled as it enters the evaporator.
