A conducting medium or high voltage cable can include at least one conductor surrounded by an insulating layer. One or more layers of conducting wires can surround the insulating layers, and the layers of conducting wires themselves can be separated by insulating layers. The centrally disposed conductor and surrounding circumferential conducting layers can include copper, aluminum, or a combination of both. The central conductor can range between about 1000 kcmil to about 4000 kcmil cross-sectional area, and the surrounding layers of conducting wires can be at least about 250 kcmil.

Hybrid conductor with circumferential conducting layers

A cable comprising that includes an elongated conductor operable to transmit electrical energy at medium or high AC voltages. The conductor has a core including a first plurality of wires of a first conductive material, and an outer layer surrounding the core including a second plurality of wires of a second conductive material. The first conductive material has a deeper characteristic skin depth than the second conductive material. The total cross sectional area of the first and second plurality of wires is at least about 2500 kcmil.

Hybrid conductor

A cold-applied cover assembly for environmentally protecting an electrical substrate includes a cold-applied polymeric cover member configured to surround the electrical substrate, and a gas transmission barrier (GTB) layer. The GTB layer is configured to surround the electrical substrate to define a protected chamber containing the electrical substrate and to inhibit ingress of a gas through the cover assembly into the protected chamber.

Cover assemblies and methods for covering electrical cables and connections

A cover assembly for covering an elongate substrate includes a resilient, elastically expandable sleeve member and a holdout device. The sleeve member defines an axially extending inner sleeve passage. The holdout device includes a generally tubular core mounted in the inner sleeve passage. The core defines axially opposed end openings and a core passage extending therebetween to receive the elongate substrate. The core retains the sleeve member in a radially expanded state and can be withdrawn from the sleeve member to release the sleeve member to radially contract onto the elongate substrate. The holdout device is configured such that, after removal of the sleeve member from the core, the core can be laterally removed from the elongate substrate.

Holdout devices and cover assemblies and methods incorporating the same

A mining cable coupler includes a hollow body with an entrance fitting for an electrical cable at the a end of the body and an electrical connector mounting member having a plurality of electrical connector receiving apertures adjacent a second end of the body with electrical connectors mounted in corresponding ones of the receiving apertures. At least one of the electrical connector includes an elongate electrical conductor that has an exposed face at an end of the hollow body. An insulating material surrounds the electrical conductor. The insulating material defines a radiussed region on the exposed end face of the electrical connector that provides electrical stress relief at the exposed end face. The end of the electrical conductor with the exposed face includes either an electrically conductive pin portion protruding from the end face or a mating electrically conductive socket portion having an opening in the end face.

Mining cable couplers

A wedge connector assembly for forming an electrical connection with first and second electrical conductors includes a coupling portion, first and second resilient spring sleeve portions located on the coupling portion, a first wedge member and a second wedge member. The first spring sleeve portion defines a first sleeve cavity tapering in a first direction away from the second spring sleeve portion and the second spring sleeve portion defines the second sleeve cavity tapering in a second direction away from the first spring sleeve portion. The first wedge member is configured to be forcibly driven into the first sleeve cavity in the first direction to capture the first conductor and the second wedge member is configured to be forcibly driven into the second sleeve cavity in the second direction to thereby capture the second conductor.

Wedge connector assemblies and methods for connecting electrical conductors using same

A cable connection assembly includes an electrically conductive cable, an electrically conductive connector, and a flowable sealant. The electrical cable includes a conductor. The connector includes a connector body having an outer surface and a lengthwise connector axis. The connector body defines a conductor cavity receiving the conductor of the electrical cable. The connector further includes a sealant flow blocking wall on the connector body and extending radially outwardly from the outer surface of the connector body. The flowable sealant surrounds a portion of the connector body. The sealant flow blocking wall is configured to inhibit flow of the sealant on the outer surface along the lengthwise connector axis.

Cable connector systems and methods including same

A high-voltage surge arrester includes an electrically conductive first terminal and an electrically conductive second terminal longitudinally spaced from the first terminal. A plurality of metal oxide varistor (MOV) bars are included, each of which extends from the first terminal to the second terminal and electrically contacts the first terminal and the second terminal. A heat conducting material contacts the MOV bars.

High amperage surge arresters

An elongate high voltage insulator is formed of a rod or tube of insulating material, with a pair of electrodes spaced apart longitudinally thereof. At least part, and preferably the whole of the outer surface of the insulating material is covered by a layer of material including a particulate filler of varistor powder in a matrix having a switching electrical stress-controlling characteristic that is in electrical contact with each of the electrodes. The insulator core may be made of porcelain, and the stress-controlling material may be zinc oxide.
