A micro-structured atomic source system is described herein. One system includes a silicon substrate, a dielectric diaphragm, wherein the dielectric diaphragm includes a heater configured to heat an atomic source substance, an intermediary material comprising a chamber configured to receive the atomic source substance, and a guide material configured to direct a flux of atoms from the atomic source substance.

Aspheric variable focal length lens systems and methods are described herein. One example of a system for aspheric variable focal length lens includes a first surface coupled to a second surface by a number of concentric rings that creates a void, wherein the first surface is a variable aspheric surface, an optical material within the void between the first surface and the second surface, a first actuator located at a first end of the first surface and a first end of the second surface, and a second actuator located at a second end of the first surface and a second end of the second surface.

A method and device include a conductive base layer, a semiconducting layer supported by and electrically coupled to the base layer, the semiconductor layer have integrated gadolinium nanoparticles presenting a high cross section to neutron particles, and a conductive top layer electrically coupled to the semiconductor layer, wherein the base layer and top layer are disposed to collect current from electrons resulting from neutron interactions with the gadolinium nanoparticles.

Some embodiments relate to a contactless RF coupling device that includes a first substrate and a second substrate. The RF coupling device may provide a broadband, low loss electrical connection without mechanical contact as would a conventional mechanical connector. The first substrate includes a first ground plane on one side and a first transmission line on an opposing side. The first transmission line includes an enlarged first coupling member at an end of the first transmission line. The second substrate includes a second ground plane on one side and a second transmission line on an opposing side. The second transmission line includes an enlarged second coupling member at an end of the second transmission line. The first ground plane may not extend under the first coupling member and the second ground plane may include an opening that is aligned with the second coupling member.

Bar code imagers and methods of operating bar code imagers are described herein. One method includes illuminating a bar code with a first illumination beam provided by the bar code imager device, wherein the first illumination beam has a first wavelength, and illuminating the bar code with a second illumination beam provided by the bar code imager device, wherein the second illumination beam has a second wavelength that is different than the first wavelength.

Embodiments of the apparatus, systems, and methods relate to a photoacoustic sensor includes an excitation source, a modulator, a quantum dot filter, an interferometer, a gas chamber, and a microphone. The excitation source generates a monochromatic light. The modulator intensity modulates the monochromatic light at a first modulation frequency. The quantum dot filter down converts the modulated monochromatic light into a broadband spectrum of infrared light. The interferometer further intensity modulates the broadband spectrum such that the at least one wavelength component of the broadband spectrum is further intensity modulated at a second modulation frequency. The gas chamber stores a sample gas and receives the plurality of modulated wavelength components. The microphone detects pressure changes within the gas chamber to produce an acoustic signal, which can be used to analyze properties of the sample gas.

One method includes selectively illuminating a portion of an axicon optical element of a bar code imager device, forming, by the axicon optical element in response to the selective illumination of the portion of the axicon optical element, an illumination beam, and illuminating a bar code with the illumination beam formed by the axicon optical element.

Embodiments of the apparatus, systems, and methods relate to a photoacoustic cell including an excitation source, a chamber, and a quantum dot substrate between the excitation source and the chamber. The excitation source generates a light spectrum. The quantum dot substrate, when subjected to the light spectrum, emits a specific wavelength of light to be received by the chamber. The photoacoustic cell apparatus may be part of a portable gas sensing system, and may be used to detect and measure the concentration of one or more gases. Additional apparatus, systems, and methods are disclosed.

Photoacoustic cell incorporating a quantum dot substrate

A system for providing photoacoustic spectroscopy. A light source having a quantum dot filter may provide a band of infrared light which is to be reflected by a lamellar grating to a photoacoustic chamber. The light may be modulated by the grating. The chamber may contain a sample of fluid for which spectral information is sought. A sensor may detect acoustic pressures in the chamber which indicate the spectral information. Signals from the sensor may be processed and displayed. Identification and concentration of certain substances in the fluid may be obtained.

Photoacoustic spectroscopy system

A gas sampling canister has an electrospray nozzle for creating an ionic fluid electrospray plume. A gas sample intake is positioned to provide a gas sample flowing through the ionic fluid electrospray plume. A cooled counter electrode is positioned to collect the electrospray plume such that selected chemicals in the gas sample are captured by ionic fluid accumulating on the cooled counter electrode. A system and method for sampling gas are also described.
