A protective enclosure for use with an electronic device includes a cushion layer configured to cover at least a portion of the side surfaces of the electronic device when the electronic device is installed in the protective enclosure; and a structural layer affixed to the cushioning layer, the structural layer having a back portion, a top portion, a right wall portion, and a left wall portion, the back portion having a first portion having a thickness that is less than a thickness of a second portion of the back portion, the first portion configured to allow a section of the protective enclosure to flex relative to the back surface of the electronic device during installation and removal of the electronic device from the protective enclosure.

The structural member has a back portion with an inner surface and an outer surface. The structural member includes a cavity configured to extend between the inner surface of the back portion and the installed electronic device. The cushioning member has a top section configured to be in direct contact with and cover at least a portion of a front surface of the installed electronic device, a bottom section configured to be in direct contact with and cover at least a portion of the back surface of the installed electronic device, and one or more side sections each configured to cover a respective side of the plurality of side surfaces of the installed electronic device. The bottom section of the cushioning member at least partially bounds the first cavity of the structural member.

A protective enclosure for an electronic device is provided. The protective enclosure includes a structural member, a cushioning member permanently affixed to the structural member, and a cavity. The structural member has a back portion and a plurality of side portions. The cushioning member extends from an upper edge configured to extend beyond the front surface of the electronic device when the electronic device is installed in the protective enclosure to a lower edge configured to extend beyond the back surface of the electronic device and be in direct contact with a portion of the back surface of the electronic device when the electronic device is installed in the protective enclosure. The cavity is configured to extend between the inner surface of the structural member to the back surface of the installed electronic device and is at least partially bounded by the lower edge of the cushioning member.

The cushioning member covers the side surfaces of the installed electronic device and includes a first raised edge and second raised edge, the first raised edge extends around the front edge of the installed electronic device and the second raised edge extends around the back edge of the installed electronic device. The thinned region has a thickness that is less than the thickness of the remainder of the back portion of the structural layer. The thinned region of the structural layer allows a section of the protective enclosure to bend away from the back surface of the electronic device for installation and removal of the electronic device from the protective enclosure.

The first cushioning layer includes a front surface and a back surface, the back surface of the first cushioning layer being overmolded on the inner surface of the shell and the front surface cushioning the back portion of the electronic device. The second cushioning member includes a perimeter wall having a tope side wall, a bottom side wall, and left and right side walls, the perimeter wall being overmolded with the retaining wall of the bottom shell and adapted to form-fit over at least the perimeter portion of the electronic device.
