A device includes an amplifier having an input terminal and an output terminal. The input terminal is configured to receive a radio frequency (RF) input signal. The device includes an output network coupled to the output terminal of the power amplifier and a first passively tunable integrated circuit (PTIC) coupled to the output network. The first PTIC includes a direct-current (DC) bias voltage input terminal configured to receive a fixed bias voltage, a control signal input terminal configured to receive a time-varying control signal, wherein the fixed bias voltage in combination with the time-varying control signal sets an operating reference point of the first PTIC, and an input terminal electrically connected to the output terminal of the amplifier, wherein a change in an output voltage signal generated by the power amplifier causes the first PTIC to modify a first effective impedance of a load presented to the power amplifier via the output network.

In response to the detected beam switch: a tuner setting is determined for an antenna tuner of an antenna element in an antenna array which transmits the first beam with the first beam configuration based on the first beam configuration, the tuner setting associated with the first beam configuration; and an indication of the tuner setting is provided to an impedance matching system of the antenna tuner to compensate for a mismatch between an impedance of the antenna element and impedance of one or more other radio frequency (RF) components of an RF front-end having the antenna element and antenna tuner.

A weighted reference metric is determined based on a second weighting factor and first, second and third reference metrics selected from first, second and third groups of reference metrics based on the enhancing performance associated with the different types of operation. The tuning is continued utilizing the weighted tuning state, responsive to a first determination that a first performance metric satisfies a first threshold according to a comparison of the first performance metric to the weighted reference metric. Method and apparatus for dynamic tuning

A matching system of a communication device that incorporates teachings of the present disclosure may include, for example, a controller that executes instructions facilitating selection of a subset of usage scenarios according to a usage condition of a communication device. An impedance circuit is adjusted based on a subset of different tuning scenarios corresponding to the subset of usage scenarios to facilitate an impedance match to an antenna of the communication device. A group of operational parameters is obtained for each tuning scenario change between the subset of different tuning scenarios. Multiple operational parameters obtained at each of the subset of different tuning scenarios at different times are processed for each tuning scenario and a tuning scenario is selected based on a determination as to which of the processed operational parameters correlates with a predetermined performance goal. A system can obtain an operational metric associated with the transceiver, determine a target figure of merit based on a compromise between a desired transmitter performance and a desired receiver, determine a current figure of merit based on the operational metric, and adjust the variable reactance component of the impedance matching circuit based on a comparison of the current figure of merit with the target figure of merit. The single write command is transmitted to a switch controller coupled to the matching network for adjusting settings of the group of switches according to the group of tuning steps to generate a desired tuning value without multiple write commands. A system that incorporates teachings of the present disclosure may include, for example, a communication device having a controller to provision a matching network that controls one or more operational characteristics of one of a receiver portion and a transmitter portion of the communication device according to a profile describing one or more characteristics of a communication system from which the communication device operates. Method and apparatus for managing operations of a communication device

A system that incorporates teachings of the subject disclosure may include, for example, a system including an RF switch connected with an antenna system that includes a first antenna and a second antenna. The system can include, where the RF switch has a first position in which the first antenna operates as the primary antenna and the second antenna operates as the diversity antenna, and wherein the RF switch has a second position in which the second antenna operates as the primary antenna and the first antenna operates as the diversity antenna. The system can include a controller coupled with the matching network and with the RF switch, where the controller receives first measurements associated with the antenna system, and where the controller adjusts the RF switch to select between the first and second positions according to the first measurements.

A system that incorporates teachings of the subject disclosure may include, for example, determining first and second tuning states based on selections from first and second groups of tuning states, respectively, detecting an operational function of the communication device, adjusting weighting between the first and second tuning states according to the operational function resulting in an adjusted weighting, and determining a tuning configuration for a matching network of the communication device according to interpolation that utilizes the first and second tuning states in conjunction with the adjusted weighting. A system that incorporates teachings of the subject disclosure may include, for example, adjusting a matching network utilizing a weighted tuning state resulting in a tuning where the weighted tuning state is determined from applying a weighting factor to multiple tuning states that are predetermined tuning states based on increasing performance associated with types of operation, comparing a measured performance metric to a weighted reference metric resulting in a comparison where the weighted reference metric is determined from applying the weighting factor to multiple reference metrics that are predetermined expected metrics based on the increasing performance associated with the types of operation, and responsive to a first determination that the measured performance metric satisfies a threshold according to the comparison, continuing the tuning utilizing the weighted tuning state. A matching network of a communication device that incorporates teachings of the present disclosure may include, for example, a controller that executes instructions facilitating an identifying a subset of usage scenarios based on a usage condition of the communication device and adjusting the matching network device based on a subset of different tuning scenarios corresponding to the subset of usage scenarios. A group of operational parameters is obtained via parametric measurements for each tuning scenario change between the tuning scenarios corresponding to each of the subset of usage scenarios. Multiple operational parameters are averaged corresponding to each of the tuning scenarios to identify an average operational parameter for each tuning scenario, and a tuning scenario is selected from among the subset of different tuning scenarios based on a determination as to which of the average operational parameters correlates with a desired performance goal.
