A multi-stage minimally invasive surgical procedure and associated instruments are disclosed. First, the surgical site is prepared. After preparation, the bone screws or anchors are attached to the bone. Subsequent to insertion of the screws, a rod or connecting member is positioned within the yoke portion of the bone screw. Caps are then placed in a pre-lock position within the yokes. The bone screws may be compressed together or distracted along the rod or connecting member, thereby setting the final spacing of the bones or bone segments. Finally the caps are moved to a final lock position to fix the screws to the rod or connecting member to maintain the bones in position relative to each other.

Minimally invasive surgical system

In one form, a bone compression device is provided having a shape-retentive bone plate with an initial, unflexed configuration and a flexed configuration. The bone plate may be shifted to the flexed configuration and secured to bones using bone screws of the bone compression device. Once the bone plate has been secured to the bones, the bone plate returns toward its unflexed configuration which compresses the bones.

Bone compression device and method

In one aspect, a surgical retractor having sliders configured to have tissue engaging members connected thereto and slider drives including operating members. The operating members are rotatable to cause the slider drives to shift the sliders relative to one another. The surgical retractor includes a coupler having a coupling configuration wherein the coupler connects the slider drives and rotation of one of the operating members causes movement of the sliders. The coupler also has a decoupling configuration wherein the coupler disconnects the slider drives and rotation of the one operating member causes movement of fewer sliders than the sliders that are moved with the coupler in the coupling configuration. The retractor has an actuator connected to the coupler and movable between a dependent slider movement position and an independent slider movement position to shift the coupler between the coupling configuration and the decoupling configuration.

Surgical retractor

In accordance with one aspect of disclosure, an inserter tool is provided for an elongate intervertebral implant. The inserter tool includes a body and a distal end portion of the body configured to be connected to the elongate intervertebral implant to orient the elongate intervertebral implant so that a longitudinal axis thereof extends in a predetermined direction. The inserter tool includes an offset member extending from the body. The offset member has an impact surface support portion spaced apart from the body and configured to position an impact surface in alignment with the implant longitudinal axis to permit the impact surface to receive an impact force directed in the predetermined direction.

Intervertebral implant inserter tool

In accordance with one aspect of the present disclosure, an apparatus for securing bone portions is provided that includes a surgical cable having a plurality of elongate elements and a connector. The connector includes a body and a deformable sleeve associated with the body and having a through opening for receiving the surgical cable. The through opening of the surgical cable has a non-deformed configuration sized to compress the elements of the surgical cable together with the surgical cable extending in the sleeve through opening. An actuator is connected to the body and is operable to deform the sleeve and further compress the compressed elements of the surgical cable therein to secure the surgical cable relative to the body.

Bone plate having a connector and a connector for a surgical loop

In one aspect, a bone plate system that includes a bone plate having a plurality of elongated through openings. The bone plate system includes a plurality of bone screws and a plurality of sliders in the elongated through openings of the bone plate that receive the bone screws. The bone plate system includes at least one resilient member for being configured to apply a biasing force to each of the sliders to urge the slider toward one end portion of a respective through opening. Further, the bone plate system includes at least one actuator having an interference position in which the actuator inhibits shifting of the sliders toward the one end portion of the through opening and a clearance position in which the actuator permits the at least one resilient member to urge the sliders and the bone screws received therein toward the one end portion of the through openings.

Bone plate system

Instruments for applying tension to a securing device, such as a cable or wire, for securing bones in place and fastening implants, such as plates, to bones. In some forms, the tensioning instrument is configured with minimal parts for ease of manufacturing and allowing single use applications. The instrument may include a pretensioning mechanism for applying desired preload before connecting a cable to be tensioned to the instrument. The instrument may be sized and configured to remain attached to a tensioned cable while other cables are connected to a bone. In another form, the instrument may be expandable to remove any slack from the securing device and apply tension thereto.

Tensioning instruments

A bone plate system having a retainer for resisting back-out of a bone anchor from a throughbore of a bone plate is provided. In one aspect, a bone plate system having a resilient retainer disposed in a bone plate throughbore with a pair of elongate arm portions of the resilient retainer extending along opposite sides of the throughbore. In another aspect, a bone plate system having a resilient retainer with a pair of elongate interference portions completely exposed in the throughbore and spaced from each other across the throughbore to retain a head of a bone anchor received in the throughbore. In addition, a bone plate system having a resilient retainer with a pair of opposite end portions disposed within a groove of a throughbore wall such that a bone anchor may be inserted into the throughbore without contacting either of the opposite end portions of the retainer.

A bone plate system is provided that permits rapid, secure stabilization of a plurality of bones, such as portions of a cut rib. The bone plate system includes a bone plate having anchor devices for securing the bone plate to, for example, cortical bone of the cut rib portions. The anchor devices have an open configuration that permits the anchor devices to be connected to the cortical bone of the cut rib portions and a clamping configuration that fixes the bone plate to the cortical bone of the cut portions. The bone plate connects the cut rib portions and stabilizes the cut rib portions against relative movement therebetween.

Bone plate system and method

A bone plate system for securing a plurality of bones is provided including a plate member, a locking device of the bone plate, and a surgical cable having a trailing end for being connected to the bone plate and a leading end for being advanced around the bones and into the locking device. The surgical cable may be tensioned to approximate the bones, urge the bones together, and seat the bone plate against the bones. The locking device may be reconfigured to a locked configuration to fix the bone plate to the surgical cable. The bone plate further includes a plurality of throughbores for receiving bone anchors that rigidly fix the bone plate to the bones. The bone plate system utilizes the tensile strength of the surgical cable and the rigid fixation between the bone anchors and the bone plate to resist relative movement of the bones.

Tensioning instrument

Systems and methods for bone fixation using a plate straddled by a retainer. In an exemplary system, the plate may be an elongated plate configured to be disposed longitudinally on a bone. The retainer may have a body interconnecting a pair of mounting regions. The body may define a recess, and each mounting region may define a first aperture and a second aperture. The retainer may be configured to be mated with the plate to position a section of the plate in the recess such that the retainer straddles the plate. The first apertures may be configured to define through-axes that are tangential to the bone, to enable use with a line including wire and/or cable, and each second aperture may be configured to define a through-axis that extends through opposite sides of the bone while avoiding a medullary canal thereof, to enable use with a threaded fastener.

System and method for bone fixation using a plate straddled by a retainer

In one aspect, a surgical driver is provided that includes a driver shaft, a handle rotatably connected to the driver shaft, and a resilient, elongate pin extending transverse to the driver shaft. The pin is operably engaged with the driver shaft and the handle so that torque applied to the handle causes turning of the driver shaft. The pin is configured to deflect to limit the torque applied to the driver shaft.

Driver tool and method

In accordance with one aspect of the present disclosure, an instrument for tensioning a surgical cable is provided that includes a rotary tensioner that is rotatable in a tensioning rotary direction to apply tension to the surgical cable. The instrument further includes a body supporting the rotary tensioner, a pawl portion of the body configured to be received at least partially in a recess of a ratchet gear of the rotary tensioner, and a living hinge portion of the body supporting the pawl portion. The living hinge portion is configured to permit the pawl portion to be shifted out of the recess and shifted into an adjacent recess of the ratchet gear with turning of the rotary tensioner in the tensioning rotary direction
