A multi-stage minimally invasive surgical procedure and associated instruments are disclosed. First, the surgical site is prepared. After preparation, the bone screws or anchors are attached to the bone. Subsequent to insertion of the screws, a rod or connecting member is positioned within the yoke portion of the bone screw. Caps are then placed in a pre-lock position within the yokes. The bone screws may be compressed together or distracted along the rod or connecting member, thereby setting the final spacing of the bones or bone segments. Finally the caps are moved to a final lock position to fix the screws to the rod or connecting member to maintain the bones in position relative to each other.

Minimally invasive surgical system

A bone plate system having a retainer for resisting back-out of a bone anchor from a throughbore of a bone plate is provided. In one aspect, a bone plate system having a resilient retainer disposed in a bone plate throughbore with a pair of elongate arm portions of the resilient retainer extending along opposite sides of the throughbore. In another aspect, a bone plate system having a resilient retainer with a pair of elongate interference portions completely exposed in the throughbore and spaced from each other across the throughbore to retain a head of a bone anchor received in the throughbore. In addition, a bone plate system having a resilient retainer with a pair of opposite end portions disposed within a groove of a throughbore wall such that a bone anchor may be inserted into the throughbore without contacting either of the opposite end portions of the retainer.

Bone plate system

Various forms of a cable fixation device, instrumentation, kit, and methods useful for repairing the skeletal system are introduced. The system utilizes a clamp housing fixing a head end of a surgical cable therein. In an operative configuration the cable is looped around a damaged bone segment and reentered through a lock aperture in the clamp housing then through a multi-part collet and lock cap residing within a lock aperture. The cable loop and each aforementioned component comprise a central axis aligned within a single plane. A sliding interface situated between the lock cap and collet prevent twisting of the surgical cable. The locking mechanism is non-destructive to the cable despite repeated unlocking and relocking of the fixation device. The axis for tensioning of the cable is coincident with the locking axis. A cerclage inserter instrument is disclosed.

Cable fixation device, instruments, and methods

Surgical cable passer instruments and methods for passing surgical cable around a bone through a surgical incision are disclosed. First and second handle tube portions comprise respective cable guide tubes and handle extensions. A proximal portion of the cable guide tube portions is fixed to a distal portion of the respective handle extension. Each handle tube portions comprise a cannula extending between a near port at a proximal end and a far port at a distal end for passage of surgical cable therebetween. Arc segments of a first cable guide tube and a second cable guide tube define a bone aperture therebetween for passing around a bone. A releasable hinge portion joins a first handle tube portion and a second handle tube portion at distal ends of a first and second handle extension.

Surgical cable passer instrument and methods

Instruments, kits, and methods are disclosed for installing an implant spacer through an incision and down a surgical corridor. The instruments also serve to align a drill guide and align and insert a spacer stabilizer for stabilization of adjacent bone portions. An inserter instrument comprises an elongated guide bar body having a guide portion for aligning instruments with said spacer and for introducing a stabilizer to secure the spacer in a predetermined position between the bone portions. In preferred embodiments a stabilizer implant portion comprising a base wall separated by a retaining member by a web wall is introduced into a pre-bored hole in a bone and secured with a stabilizer anchor extending through a central bore. Included is a retractable graft block for securing graft material within an aperture of a spacer during insertion of the spacer.

Bone stabilization implants, instruments, and methods

Instruments, kits, and methods are disclosed for installing an implant spacer through an incision and down a surgical corridor. The instruments also serve to align a drill guide and align and insert a spacer stabilizer for stabilization of adjacent bone portions. The instrument comprises an elongated guide bar body, an inserter face at a distal end of said guide bar body for abutting an instrument attachment portion of a spacer, a connection tip portion for securing a spacer against an inserter face, and a guide portion of said elongated guide bar body for aligning instruments with said spacer and for introducing a stabilizer to secure the spacer in a predetermined position between the bone portions. Included is a retractable graft block for securing graft material within an aperture of said spacer during insertion of the spacer.

Apparatus and method for stabilizing adjacent bone portions

A screw device for compressing and fixing together a proximal and distal bone part along a surgical axis comprising: a bone screw portion comprising an elongate body inscribed with bone screw threads at a leading end of an outer surface of said body; an elongate tubular torque stabilizer portion for spanning said bone parts and comprising one or more torsion stops to engage each bone part to limit rotational movement between the bone parts and a translation stop on said torque stabilizer to seat against a portion of the proximal bone to limit translation of said torque stabilizer portion along the surgical axis; and a compressor lock portion engaging the bone screw portion and torque stabilizer portion to draw said bone screw portion proximally along the surgical axis toward said translation stop therein compressing said bone parts together.

Bone fixation screw and method

A surgical cable system having a length of cable and a locking body on which a first cable end is operatively located. The locking body defines a receiver for a first portion of the cable with the cable formed into a first loop that resides generally in a first plane. A locking structure on the locking body cooperates with the first portion of the cable to maintain the first loop in a tensioned state. The locking structure has an actuator that is operable to change the state of the locking structure. The locking structure is changeable from a released state into a locked state as an incident of one of: a) moving at least a part of the actuator along and/or around an axis that is generally parallel to the first plane; and b) moving a part of the cable length along a first line that is generally parallel to the first plane.

Cable system for surgical application

A method and apparatus for stabilizing first and second adjacent bone portions. The method includes the steps of: providing a spacer; providing a stabilizer, with the spacer and stabilizer configured to be movable guidingly, one relative to the other, between a pre-assembly relationship and an operative relationship; and placing the spacer and stabilizer into an operative relationship with the first and second adjacent bone portions. As an incident of the spacer and stabilizer being changed from their pre-assembly relationship into the operative relationship with each other and the first and second bone portions, the spacer, stabilizer and first bone portion cooperate to cause the first bone portion and spacer to be urged towards each other. The method may be carried out by moving the stabilizer and spacer, and all auxiliary parts and handling and assembling instruments, substantially in a single plane along one line or parallel lines.
