A bumper assembly for an automotive vehicle comprises a bumper beam for connection to a frame of the vehicle and an energy absorbing component extending laterally adjacent a front surface of the bumper beam. The energy absorbing component comprises a plurality of laterally-spaced bands, each band comprising an upper wall, a lower wall, and a forward wall. The bands are connected along adjacent rear edges of the upper walls and/or adjacent rear edges of the lower walls, such that the bands are decoupled from one another forward of the rear edges. This construction allows the bands to deform individually during a pedestrian collision, the upper and lower walls buckling to absorb energy in an optimum manner. The energy absorbing component may be attached to the bumper beam by upper and/or lower lateral strips have mounting features for fitting into interference-fit engagement with mating features on the bumper beam.

Polynomial functions of acceleration and time are used to develop an air bag activation decision. The polynomial functions include windowing constraints, a spike detector to detect the oscillatory signal in side impacts, and an above bias delay detector to help detect low speed impacts.

Polynomial windowing algorithm for impact responsive activation

A method for activating an impact responsive device in a passenger vehicle is provided wherein a single point sensing device senses deceleration of the vehicle during an impact event. The sensed deceleration is integrated to determine velocity of the vehicle. The velocity is then integrated to determine displacement of the vehicle. The difference between the deceleration and a preselected deceleration bias is integrated over displacement to provide a residual energy density. This residual energy density is compared to the threshold residual energy density from a predefined activation threshold line which is selected based on the impact characteristics of the vehicle. When the residual energy density is equal to or exceeds the activation threshold line, the impact responsive device is activated.
