An Illuminated display integrated with a fabric substrate, comprising a rear electrode formed on a portion of a front surface of the fabric substrate, the rear electrode being formed on the fabric substrate portion by applying a catalyst to the fabric portion and subsequently immersing the fabric portion in an electroless plating bath followed by immersing the fabric portion in an electrode bath, a dielectric layer formed onto the fabric substrate surface substantially over the rear electrode, a light emitting layer formed onto the dielectric layer, a transparent conductive layer formed onto the light emitting layer; and a front electrode lead electrically connected to the transparent conductive layer to transport energy thereto.

Illuminated display system and process

Signs including electroluminescent lamps are described. In accordance with one embodiment of the present invention a sign includes an electroluminescent lamp integrally formed therewith. The electroluminescent lamp is formed on the sign by using the sign as a substrate for the lamp and performing the steps of screen printing a rear electrode to a front surface of the sign, screen printing at least one dielectric layer over the rear electrode after screen printing the rear electrode to the sign, screen printing a phosphor layer over the dielectric layer to define a desired area of illumination that is smaller in area than the dielectric layer, screen printing a sealant layer over the remaining portion of the dielectric layer, screen printing a layer of indium tin oxide ink to the phosphor layer, screen printing an outlining electrode layer to the sign that outlines the rear electrode, screen printing a background layer onto the sign so that the background layer substantially surrounds the desired area of illumination, and applying a protective coat over the indium tin oxide ink and background layer. The rear electrode of each lamp is screen printed directly to the front surface of the sign, and the other layers of the EL lamp are screen printed over the rear electrode.

Method of forming an illuminated design on a substrate

Integrated illumination systems employing illumination devices formed onto substrates are described. According to one embodiment, the display system combines an electroluminescent lamp, a photocell, a power supply receiving energy from the photocell and discharging electrical energy to the EL lamp, and, optionally, a control switch to manage the intervals of electrical energy discharge to the EL lamp for illumination; the components of the d lay system combining to provide illumination for an object, such as a sign. According to another embodiment, a photocell, power supply and light emitting device are each formed onto a single substrate to form a totally self-contained, self-powered illuminating device. According to another embodiment, an electroluminescent lamp is provided to form an illuminated decal. The EL lamp may be configured to have a front illumination surface and a back mounting surface, with a decal backing attached to the back mounting surface. The decal backing is configured to be affixed to various objects, such as vehicles, to provide an illumination source thereon. Alternatively, a magnetic material may be affixed to the back mounting surface of the EL lamp to replace the decal backing.

Integrated illumination system

The present system provides electroluminescent devices including electroluminescent panels, and more specifically, electroluminescent devices fabricated from materials including light emitting polymers and particles comprising light emitting polymers that have been encapsulated with conductive polymers and/or insulative polymers.

Electroluminescent sign

An illuminated display integrated with a fabric substrate, comprising a rear electrode formed on a portion of a front surface of the fabric substrate, the rear electrode being formed on the fabric substrate portion by applying a catalyst to the fabric portion and subsequently immersing the fabric portion in an electroless plating bath followed by immersing the fabric portion in an electrode bath, a dielectric layer formed onto the fabric substrate surface substantially over the rear electrode, a light emmitting layer formed onto the dielectric layer, a transparent conductive layer formed onto the light emitting layer; and a front electrode lead electrically connected to the transparent conductive layer to transport energy thereto.

The present invention includes a smart controller for electroluminescent lamps which compensates for a range of RC time constants and adjusts its output frequency accordingly such that a relatively uniform light output is obtained on all illuminated areas of large EL display panels. The controller incorporates a device which monitors the current as the pulse train is applied to the EL panel. A sensing circuit determines if the current decayed to zero during the positive portion of the pulse. If the current did not decay to zero, the frequency is decreased until a decay to zero is sensed. Uniform light output is thus maintained from panel to panel, regardless of RC time constant differences between different EL panels, or variations in panel electrical characteristics over time. In an alternate embodiment of the present invention, several different frequencies are applied to the EL panel nearly simultaneously. In this case the frequency that effectively controls the light output is determined by the RC time constant of the EL panel circuit.

Electroluminescent display intelligent controller

Signs including electroluminescent lamps are described. In accordance with one embodiment of the present invention, electroluminescent lamps are coupled to a sign by first forming a rear electrode on a front surface of the sign. After forming the rear electrode on the sign, a dielectric layer is screen printed over the rear electrode, and a phosphor layer is screen printed over the dielectric layer. A layer of indium tin oxide ink is then screen printed to the phosphor layer to form an EL lamp.

An illumination system with a panel that is capable of producing electroluminescence as well as reflecting incident light independent of the electroluminescence function of the panel. A layer of phosphor is excited by a power source, and a reflective layer disposed on top of the phosphor layer reflects incident light from an outside light source. The reflective layer is transparent and does not interfere with the electroluminescence of the panel.

Electroluminescent and light reflective panel

An illuminated safety helmet incorporating a light panel that is capable of producing electroluminescence, and also, reflecting incident light that is independent of the electroluminescence function of the panel. The light panel is secured to the helmet so as to be visible to an observer, and a power source is secured to the helmet so as not to interfere with the wearing of the helmet. The power source is connected to the light panel, and a control switch may be provided to control the power directed from the power source to the light panel.
