Techniques to reduce light dissipation (e.g., light bleed) for electronic device assemblies. According to one embodiment, the techniques include forming a housing for a device from a plastic material. The housing defines an area of permissible light transmission from an interior portion of the housing through an exterior portion of the housing to provide one or more visual notifications for the device. The techniques further include forming a light dissipation layer from the plastic material proximate the area of permissible light transmission to inhibit light propagation through the housing outside the area of permissible light transmission.

Techniques to reduce light bleed for electronic device assemblies

In one embodiment, a satellite microphone assembly for use in teleconferencing or other audio based communications comprises a base housing a microphone and volume control electronics. The base is enclosed by a cylinder, rotatable about the base and having a top surface configured to be an actuatable button to toggle a mute/unmute status of the microphone. The cylinder has a sidewall configured to be engaged by a user such that the user can rotate the cylinder. An optical sensor is supported by the base, and is configured to detect a rotation of the cylinder and to output information about a direction and a degree of rotation of the cylinder to the volume control electronics, causing a rotation of the cylinder to affect the volume level of a speaker.

An example system for a telephone can include a unibody plate having a front portion and a back portion, a back plate mounted to the back portion of the unibody plate, and a touch sensitive display panel mounted to the front portion of the unibody plate. The unibody plate can be of a single piece of milled material. The back portion of the back plate, when combined with the unibody plate, can forming at least one cavity such as a speaker cavity. The speaker cavity can include a speaker mount, a speaker cradle, and a speaker. The speaker cradle can have an interior portion and be secured to the back plate. The speaker mount can engages the back portion of the unibody plate and the rim of speaker cradle. The speaker can be mounted within the interior portion of the speaker cradle.

In one embodiment, a system may include a telephone casing comprising a magnet and a backside. The system can also include a telephone cord and a telephone cord retainer comprising magnetic material. The telephone cord retainer can retain the telephone cord. Magnetic force may retain the telephone cord retainer to the telephone casing.

A rotary encoder of a control surface has a display. The display includes a ring of light emitting elements, such as light emitting diodes (LEDs), in the control surface around the shaft and knob of the rotary encoder. The rotary encoder has a shaft that rotates about an axis under control of an operator. The rotary encode has an output providing a signal indicative of the rotational movement of the shaft. A knob engages the shaft and is used by the operator to rotate the shaft. The knob, in general, has a narrow stem that engages the shaft of the rotary encoder and extends away from the control surface, and a top portion which the operator manipulates to turn the knob. The stem has a substantially circular cross-section, in a plane perpendicular to the axis of the shaft of the rotary encoder, with a narrow diameter. Similarly, the top portion has a substantially circular cross-section, in a plane perpendicular to the axis of the shaft of the rotary encoder, with a diameter larger than the diameter of the shaft cross-section. The narrow stem may have a cylindrical shape. The top portion may have a spherical shape and may be substantially rotationally symmetrical in a plane perpendicular to its axis, i.e., when viewed from the top. The knob and the shaft may be metalized to provide touch sensitivity. The top portion may include a rubber insert that protrudes around its circumference. The narrow diameter of the stem minimizes the obstruction of the view of the ring of light emitting elements. The size and texture of the top portion of the knob provides a good grip, feel and tactile response for the operator.
