Lost circulation compositions, systems, and methods of using the same are described. A lost circulation composition comprises a water-swellable starch graft copolymer; and a carrier fluid. A method for bridging a lost circulation zone comprises providing a lost circulation composition comprising a water-swellable starch graft copolymer and a carrier fluid. Then introducing the lost circulation composition into a wellbore within a subterranean formation, wherein the subterranean formation comprises a lost circulation zone. Finally the lost circulation composition is placed into the lost circulation zone.

A method of removing a soluble metal ion from a contaminated brine fluid comprising: adding lime to the contaminated brine fluid, wherein the lime causes the soluble metal ion to become insoluble in the contaminated brine fluid; and passing the contaminated brine fluid through a filter media, wherein the step of passing is performed after the step of adding, and wherein after the brine fluid is passed through the filter media, a brine fluid having a reduced concentration of the metal ion is produced. Another method of removing a soluble metal ion from a contaminated brine fluid comprises: passing the contaminated brine fluid through a filter media, wherein the filter media comprises the lime.

A treatment fluid comprises: a base fluid; a lost-circulation material, wherein the lost-circulation material inhibits or prevents some or all of the treatment fluid from penetrating into a subterranean formation from a wellbore, wherein the wellbore penetrates the subterranean formation; and a suspending agent, wherein the suspending agent consists of a plurality of fibers, and wherein the suspending agent provides a lost-circulation material distribution of at least 30% for a test treatment fluid consisting essentially of the base fluid, the lost-circulation material, and the suspending agent at the temperature of a lost-circulation zone of the subterranean formation and static aging for at least 1 hour.

An apparatus for testing lost circulation materials ('LCMs') for use in a formation is disclosed. The apparatus may comprise a LCM cell that contains at least one formation simulation component. A pressurized tank may be in fluid communication with the LCM cell, and may force a sample LCM slurry into the LCM cell. An LCM receiver may also be in fluid communication with the LCM cell, and may receive the LCM slurry that flows through the LCM cell.

Method and apparatus for testing lost circulation materials for subterranean formations

In some instances, a fluid loss control enhancement additive may synergistically work with lost circulation materials ('LCM') to arrest lost circulation in wellbores where LCMs alone have been ineffective. For example, a method may involve treating a wellbore penetrating a subterranean formation with a pill comprising an aqueous base fluid and a lost circulation material; observing fluid loss from the wellbore to the subterranean formation while treating the wellbore with the pill; and adding salt, a swellable polymer, and fibers to the pill.

The present disclosure relates to systems and methods for wellbore pressure control with separated fluid columns. One embodiment is a composition comprising: a base fluid, a hectorite clay, a secondary clay comprising at least one clay selected from the group consisting of an attapulgite clay, a sepiolite clay, a palygorskite clay, and any combination thereof, and a plurality of fibers. Another embodiment is a method comprising: introducing a first fluid into a wellbore; introducing a barrier pill into the wellbore, wherein the barrier pill comprises: a base fluid, a hectorite clay, and a plurality of fibers; and introducing a second fluid into the wellbore. Another embodiment is a method comprising: introducing a first fluid into a wellbore; introducing a barrier pill into the wellbore, wherein the barrier pill comprises: a base fluid, a hectorite clay, and a secondary clay comprising at least one clay selected from the group consisting of an attapulgite clay, a sepiolite clay, a palygorskite clay, and any combination thereof; and introducing a second fluid into the wellbore.

Apparatus and methods for simulation of bore hole fractures are disclosed. A device for simulating a fracture in a subterranean formation comprises a housing, a gap in the housing, and one or more shims positioned inside the gap. The shims cover at least a portion of a surface of a wall forming the gap. The device further comprises an inlet for directing a sample fluid into the gap. The sample fluid flows through the gap and flows out of the gap through an outlet.

Methods and systems for testing lost circulation materials

Compositions for lost circulation materials (LCM) and methods for using same in drilling and/or completing wellbores that help solve lost circulation problems in a wide range of fracture sizes, thereby advantageously eliminating the need for a variety of products for lost circulation in a field at any one time. The compositions provide specific LCM components in specific ratios that are analogs to lost circulation fractures and that yield superior performance in preventing or alleviating lost circulation in drilling and cementing boreholes. The compositions have a multi-modal particle size distribution (PSD) which provides a higher concentration of component materials in the same range of two or more fracture widths or median pore size diameters, thus allowing plugging to occur over a wider range than a single mode or narrow PSD.

A method of treating a portion of wellbore comprising introducing a treatment fluid into the portion of the wellbore. The treatment fluid comprises a base fluid and an additive comprising a plurality of fibrillated fibers. The amount of fibrillation is at least sufficient such that at least a portion of the fibrillated fibers form a fiber network in the base fluid.

A hydrated inorganic oxide material capable of elongating from a planar shape to a fiber shape along a thickness direction of the planar shape, wherein the fiber shape is at least about 25 times greater in the thickness direction than the planar shape, and wherein during elongating a radial dimension of the hydrated inorganic oxide material changes by less than about 10% may be useful in a plurality of wellbore operations. A wellbore treatment fluid containing lost circulation materials and methods for using the treatment fluid, the fluid including a carrier fluid and shape changing polymer structures. The shape changing polymer structures may be folded or rolled into various cross-sectional surface area reducing configurations and are capable of reversibly extending and reversibly contracting with changes in temperature. The materials forming the shape changing polymer structures may include at least one selected from poly[ethylene-co-(vinyl acetate)], poly(&#x3c9;-pentadecalactone), poly(&#x3b5;-caprolactone), and copolymers thereof. A method for utilizing the treatment fluid for creation or maintenance of a well includes forming or providing the treatment fluid and introducing the treatment fluid into a borehole.

Methods and compositions to use shape changing polymers in subterranean formations

A method using a single additive to modify or enhance one or more properties of a drilling fluid for drilling a wellbore in a subterranean formation, prevent lost circulation during the drilling, and/or increase bonding strength during cementing of the wellbore. The additive comprises an oil absorbent material comprising homopolymers or copolymers comprising styrene butadiene, acrylate, phthalate, and carbonate salts.
