Described implementations utilize existing power lines at a location to detect and monitor the presence, position, and/or identity of users at the location. Rather than requiring dedicated monitors within each room or position within the location, the described implementations monitor a baseline voltage signal and/or an introduced voltage signal on the ground line of an existing power line of the location to determine the presence, position, and/or identity of a user at the location, either alone or in combination with other information.

Presence detection through radio frequency emissions from an electrical circuit

Described implementations monitor potential voltage at a location to determine device usage at the location. The implementations utilize a plug-in energy sensor that is plugged directly into any electrical outlet at the location and measures deviation in voltage at the location. Once plugged into an electrical outlet, the plug-in energy sensor monitors one or more of the lead line and ground, the neutral line and ground, and/or the ground line with respect to a reference for changes in potential voltage at the location. Different devices and different device states of those devices generate different signatures of voltage as they operate, thereby making the signatures unique, or almost unique, to different device types, different devices, and/or different device states. By monitoring for signatures in the voltage, operation of devices in different device states at the location can be determined, along with start times and stop times of those states associated with the various devices.

Plug-in energy sensor

Described is an apparatus to concurrently measure multiple input voltages at a high sampling data rate, such as at least two mega-samples per second. The apparatus may include a plurality of voltage data acquisition components that concurrently sample different input voltages and produce respective voltage data samples. Each of the plurality of voltage data acquisition components may be directly coupled to a field programmable gate array that receives the voltage data samples, packetizes those voltage data samples, and provide the packetized voltage data samples to a system on chip.

Synchronous voltage signature data collection apparatus

A method may include receiving, by a first device, a first key command from the first device or a second device operatively connected to the first device, the first key command indicative of a first infrared (IR) command code received by the first device or the second device. The method may include receiving a non-IR message and determining, based on the message, that the first key command is associated with a second IR command code for controlling a third device. The method may include preventing, based on the determination that the first key command is associated with the second IR command code for controlling the third device, the first key command from causing the first device or the second device to perform an action.

Described are systems, methods, and apparatus that enable power management and reduction at both the individual and group level to help reduce the overall power demand on a power system. One or more sensors may be positioned at different locations that collect and provide various sensor data to a remote computing system, referred to herein as a management system. The management system maintains location profiles for each location, user profiles for users at the various locations, and may also receive third party data, such as weather patterns, power system load, etc. The management system utilizes the received data to determine one or more energy saving actions that may be performed at the location(s) to reduce energy consumption and lower the demand on the power system.

In a system that reduces interference between devices that transmit infrared signals, a first device transmits a first infrared signal to a second device during a first time period. The second device determines a command encoded by the first infrared signal. When the first time period has elapsed, the first device ceases transmission during a second time period. The second device transmits the second infrared signal to a third device during the second time period. As a result, transmissions from the second device to a third device are not affected by interference from transmissions by the first device. Selected signals from the first device may be permitted during the second time period, such as signals to cancel previous commands or to queue additional commands.

Systems for coexistence of infrared communications

The recording of broadcast media can be performed by a network storage service even where a client is unable to provide a full copy of the media file. For example, a client might want to record a television broadcast by transmitting the content to a remote storage service. For a high definition format, however, the upload limitations of the data connection may prevent the full content from being uploaded from that client. Accordingly, clients recording the same content and using the same service can upload respective segments of the content, with each segment being provided by at least one of the clients and available for subsequent download. At least some of those clients can also store some of the segments such that those clients can act as peer sources for obtaining those segments.

A system for distributing data to a user's device leveraging locally shared cache and multiple communication pathways. A content server of the system may pre-cache content in the shared cache in anticipation that a user will want to access the content. Among other things, pre-caching enables a user to access content on-demand that would require a faster connection to the Internet than the user may have. The system can leverage different communications pathways to the various devices utilizing the shared cache, providing timely delivery of content even if each device's individual connection to the internet is too slow to support timely delivery.

Systems and approaches are provided for robustly detecting and tracking a user. Image data can be captured and processed to provide an estimated position and/or orientation of the user. Other sensor data, such as from an accelerometer and/or gyroscope, can be determined for a more robust estimation of the user's position and/or orientation. Multiple user detection processes and/or motion estimation approaches and their corresponding confidence levels can also be combined to determine a final estimated position and orientation of the user. The multiple user pose estimations and/or motion estimations can be combined via an approach such as probabilistic system modeling and maximum likelihood estimation.

Robust user detection and tracking

Ancillary or secondary displays usable with various electronic devices are described herein. In some implementations, the ancillary display may include a dual hinge to allow the ancillary display to act as a cover for a portion of an associated electronic device. In some implementations, the ancillary display may include a magnetic connector capable of providing a mechanical coupling with an electronic device. The magnetic connector may also provide a pathway for the transmission of data and/or power between the ancillary display and the electronic device.
