The present invention provides processes for the production of chlorinated methanes via the direct chlorination of methane. The processes include a dehydrochlorination and/or chlorination step that converts up to 100% of the higher chlorinated alkanes in a process stream from the methane chlorination reaction into more highly chlorinated alkanes. These more highly chlorinated alkanes can be easily removed from the process stream. The use of a cost effective feedstream of crude methane is thus rendered possible, without additional capital expenditure for the sophisticated separation equipment required to separate ethane and other hydrocarbon components from the methane feed.

Process for the production of chlorinated methanes

Processes for the production of chlorinated propenes are provided. The processes make use of 1,2-dichloropropane as a starting material and subject a feedstream comprising the same to an ionic chlorination process. At least a portion of any tri- and tetrachlorinated propanes not amenable to ionic chlorination conditions are removed from the ionic chlorination product stream, or, are subjected to chemical base dehydrochlorination step. In this way, recycle of intermediates not amenable to ionic chlorination reactions is reduced or avoided, as is the buildup of these intermediates within the process. Selectivity and, in some embodiments, yield of the process is thus enhanced.

4,5,6-Trichloropicolinic acid is prepared by selectively dechlorinating 3,4,5,6-tetrachloropicolinic acid with zinc and a catalyst prepared from a nickel compound and a bidentate ligand in a polar solvent.

Processes for the production of chlorinated alkanes are provided. The present processes comprise dehydrochlorinating one or more trichloroalkanes having from 3-6 carbon atoms and vicinal chlorine atoms, followed by a series of sequential chlorination and/or further dehydrochlorination steps. Because the trichloroalkane is first dehydrochlorinated, rather than being first chlorinated, greater specificity to desired tetra- and pentachloroalkanes can be seen.

Process for the production of chlorinated alkanes

Processes for the production of chlorinated propenes are provided. The processes proceed through the production of cyclic intermediate that is thereafter readily converted to a desired chloropropane, e.g., via selective pyrolysis. The process may be conducted using starting materials that are readily commercially available and/or that may be reacted safely in standard laboratory equipment so that capital cost savings may be seen. The process does not require the use of catalysts and yet, process conditions less extreme than many conventional processes for the production of chlorinated propenes are suitable, so that raw material and utility cost savings are also possible.

Processes for the production of chlorinated propanes and propenes are provided. The present processes comprise catalyzing at least one chlorination step with one or more regios elective catalysts that provide a regioselectivity to one chloropropane of at least 5:1 relative to other chloropropanes.

Process for the production of chlorinated propanes and propenes

Processes for the production of chlorinated alkanes are provided. The present processes comprise catalyzing the chlorination of a feedstream comprising one or more alkanes and/or alkenes with a catalyst system comprising one or more inorganic iodine salts and/or lower than conventional levels of elemental iodine and at least one Lewis acid. The processes are conducted in a nonaqueous media, and so, the one or more inorganic iodine salts are recoverable and/or reusable, in whole or in part.

Processes for the production of chlorinated alkanes are provided. The present processes comprise catalyzing the addition of at least two chlorine atoms to an alkane and/or alkene with a catalyst system comprising one or more nonmetallic iodides and/or lower than conventional levels of elemental iodine and at least one Lewis acid. The present processes make use of sulfuryl chloride, or chlorine gas, as a chlorinating agent.

Methods of purifying acidic metal solutions by removing at least a portion of alpha-particle emitting materials are provided. The purified metal solutions are useful in a variety of applications requiring low levels of alpha-particle emission.

Alpha-particle emitter removal

Processes for the production of chlorinated alkanes are provided. The present processes comprise reacting one or more mono- and/or dichloroalkanes to form tri-, tetra- and/or pentachloroalkanes, with high regioselectivity. In those embodiments wherein a dichloroalkane is desirably utilized, it may advantageously be a vicinal dichloroalkane. Further, only one catalyst is utilized. The present processes make use of sulfuryl chloride as a chlorinating agent, rather than a gaseous chlorinating agent such as chlorine gas. Finally, the process uses lower intensity process conditions than at least some conventional processes, and thus, operating costs are saved.

Methods of treating of stannous oxide particles having at least a partial surface crust of stannic oxide by contacting the particles with a reducing agent for a period of time sufficient to produce stannous oxide are provided. The stannous oxide particles produced are readily soluble in organic sulfonic acids.

Process for treating crusty SnO

Methods of preparing stannous oxide including neutralizing a solution of divalent tin ions in a mineral acid using a weak base, followed by heating the neutralized solution optionally under an inert atmosphere are provided. The stannous oxide particles produced are readily soluble in alkyl sulfonic acids.

Process for making SnO

Stannous oxide particles having a methane sulfonic acid dissolution rate of 3.56 g stannous oxide in 8.1 g of 70% methane sulfonic acid of 30 seconds at a temperature of 20 to 25&#xb0; C. are disclosed, including methods of making them. Also disclosed are packaged stannous oxide particles that reduce the formation of stannic oxide on the surface of the particles over time.
