Rigid-rod and segmented rigid-rod polymers, methods for preparing the polymers and useful articles incorporating the polymers are provided. The polymers incorporate rigid-rod backbones with pendant solubilizing groups attached thereto for rendering the polymers soluble.

Rigid-rod polymers

Methods for preparing rigid-rod macromonomers having a polyaromatic backbone, solubilizing side groups, and reactive end groups are provided. Such methods include catalytic reductive coupling of substituted 1,4-dihaloaromatic compounds in the presence of an endcapping moiety.

Photoimageable polyquinoline compositions comprise a polyquinoline polymer, a diazonaphthoquinone and optionally a photosensitizer. The composition is prepared by dissolving the polyquinoline polymer, diazonaphthoquinone and photosensitizer in a solvent to form a solution, coating the solution onto a substrate and thereafter removing the solvent to form a film. The film is exposed to light through a photomask and developed by immersion in a selective solvent to yield a photopatterned dielectric film.

Photoimageable polyquinoline compositions comprise a polyquinoline polymer, a photogenerable acid precursor and optionally a photosensitizer. The composition is prepared by dissolving the polyquinoline polymer, photogenerable acid precursor and photosensitizer in a polar solvent to form a solution, coating the solution onto a substrate and thereafter removing the solvent to form a film. The film is exposed to light through a photo mask and developed by immersion in a selective solvent to yield a photopatterned dielectric film.

A catalyst is provided which is useful for coupling aryl halides or aryl sulfonates to produce biaryls or polyaryls. The catalyst composition is formed by mixing together in an anhydrous aprotic solvent a nickel compound or nickel complex, a phosphite ligand, and a reducing metal which can be aluminum, magnesium, or zinc or the like.

Rigid-rod macromonomers, and methods for preparing such macromonomers, having a polyaromatic backbone, solubilizing side groups, and reactive side groups are provided. The macromonomers are chemically incorporated into polymer systems to provide stronger, stiffened polymers.

A soluble rigid-rod macromonomer is provided which has the following formula: ##STR1## wherein each A.sub.1, A.sub.2, A.sub.3, and A.sub.4, on each monomer unit, independently, is C or N, and each G.sub.1, G.sub.2, G.sub.3, and G.sub.4, on each monomer unit, independently, is H or a solubilizing side group, provided that at least one monomer unit has at least one solubilizing side group. The solubilizing side groups provide the macromonomers with a solubility of at least 0.5% by weight in the solvent system from which they are formed. E is a reactive end group, and the macromonomer has an average degree of polymerization, DP.sub.n, greater than 6. Such macromonomers are chemically incorporated into polymer systems to provide stronger stiffened polymers.

A soluble rigid-rod macromonomer is provided which has the following formula: ##STR1## wherein each G.sub.1, G.sub.2, G.sub.3, and G.sub.4, on each monomer unit, independently, is H or a solubilizing side group, provided that at least one monomer unit has at least one solubilizing side group. The solubilizing side groups provide the macromonomers with a solubility of at least 0.5% by weight in the solvent system from which they are formed. E is a reactive end group, and the macromonomer has an average degree of polymerization, DP.sub.n, greater than 6. Such macromonomers are chemically incorporated into polymer systems to provide stronger stiffened polymers.

A method is provided for the preparation of polyquinoline polymers based on Friedlander condensation polymerization. The method comprises mixing monomers which, when polymerized, form a polyquinoline polymer, together with a catalyst and a solvent, wherein the catalyst comprises an alkyl phosphate.

New polyquinoline polymers are provided, as well as new methods for preparing the polyquinoline polymers using a novel combination of monomers. The polyquinoline polymers comprise repeat units comprising at least one quinoline nucleus and at least one ether linkage and having as end groups either fluoro groups or hydroxy groups or a combination of fluoro and hydroxy groups. The polymers are formed by providing a monomer comprising two fluoro groups, where each such fluoro group is activated by a quinoline nucleus, a diol monomer provided in the form of its bis-oxide salt, or in the presence of a base capable of deprotonating the diol and reacting the difluoro and diol monomers together in a dipolar solvent to form the polyquinoline polymer. In an alternative embodiment, the polyquinoline polymers of the present invention are formed by reacting a fluoro hydroxy monomer comprising a quinoline nucleus containing one activated fluoro group and one hydroxy group in the presence of a base and a dipolar solvent to form said polymer. In yet another alternative embodiment, the polyquinoline polymer is formed by providing a monomer which comprises a quinoline nucleus containing one activated fluoro group and one hydroxy group and treating the monomer with a base to form an oxide salt and reacting the monomer salt in a dipolar solvent to form said polymer.
