In a gas-fired furnace of the type having a manifold assembly, comprising a gas valve, a manifold, orifices extending from the manifold and located on a common line, and a gas control assembly having a burner box compartment, the improvement comprises an apparatus for attaching a manifold assembly to the burner box compartment. The apparatus comprises a plurality of brackets, each bracket being affixed to the manifold at a position essentially 180.degree. from the common line of orifices, and essentially perpendicular to the common line; each end of the bracket is retained near opposite side of the opening of the burner box compartment, and one end of each bracket is affixed to the side wall of the burner box.

In a fixed-firing rate induced draft furnace, having a heat exchanger and an integrated control inducer motor, an improved method of controlling excess air comprising the steps of: providing at least one pressure switch that is responsive to a preselected pressure drop level in the heat exchanger, the pressure drop level being selected so as to be commensurate with a theoretically desired excess air level under firing operating conditions; accelerating the integrated control inducer motor until the pressure switch closes and thereupon recording a first motor speed and a first current level; calculating a first torque value based on the first motor speed and the first current level; and regulating torque applied to the integrated control inducer motor in accordance with the first torque value.

A bracket for a hot surface ignitor is provided with a central opening having downwardly directed supporting arms and upwardly directed L-shaped retention arms such that the ignitor can be lockingly engaged with the bracket without creating crack-inducing stresses in the ceramic base of the ignitor. The bracket is further provided with upwardly directed resilient detents that allow the bracket to be securely snapped into the burner box of a gas furnace. The bracket thus positions the hot surface portion of the ignitor within the burner box while positioning the ceramic base and electric supply wires exterior to the box.

An induced flow condenser furnace has a combustion air intake shoe that connects the combustion air pipe to the burner box, and has a provision for draining off any condensate from the combustion air pipe before it reaches the burner box. The shoe has a tray portion with an open top that mates with an intake opening in one wall of the burner box, and a tube portion that connects at one end with the combustion air pipe and at the other end with an end cap. The latter has a drain nipple to permit escape of the condensate. An internal lip is formed in the tube portion traps condensate when the furnace is poised in an inverted or downflow orientation. This permits the furnace to be poised in any of four orientations. The intake shoe facilitates connection of the inlet pipe and drain tube in all multi-poise configurations.

A floating seal arrangement is provided between the drive shaft of an electric motor and the cover plate of an inducer housing, through which the shaft extends. This allows radial movement of the shaft within the housing opening, while at the same time preventing the migration of a liquid from the inducer housing to the motor.
