An apparatus for locating a preform on a mold includes a preform handling tool and a force sensor coupled to the preform handling tool such that the force sensor is capable of sensing forces applied to the preform during handling of the preform by the preform handling tool. The apparatus includes a control device that is arranged and operable to move the preform handling tool relative to the mold. A method of locating the preform on the mold includes picking up the preform using the preform handling tool and placing the preform in a vicinity of the mold. Positions on the mold are mapped with an edge of the preform with the aid of the force sensor. The preform is paced on the mold according to the mapped positions.

Method and apparatus for locating a preform on a mold

The disclosure provides a method for forming a hole in a glass or glass-ceramic sheets. The method includes scoring a major surface of a glass or glass-ceramic sheet to define the hole, placing the sheet on a cavity-containing receiving surface such that a peripheral edge of the cavity is positioned external to the area bounded by the first score, and fracturing the sheet along the score to break away the portion of the sheet defined by the first score. The method allows for the formation of large openings in thin glass sheets where the mother sheet is not broken or damaged by the formation of the opening.

A glass etching medium and a method for etching the surface of a glass sheet to modify surface flaw characteristics without degrading the optical quality of the sheet surface, wherein the etching medium is a thickened aqueous acidic fluoride-containing paste comprising at least one dissolved, water-soluble, high-molecular-weight poly (ethylene oxide) polymer thickener.

Glass etching media and methods

A glass melting furnace is operated under a set of control parameters. A glass batch is fed into the glass melting furnace and melted into molten glass. During the melting, a surface layer comprising a portion of the glass batch and foam forms over the molten glass. A plurality of thermograms of the interior of the glass melting furnace is obtained. The thermograms are analyzed to determine whether there is instability in the thermodynamics of the surface layer. The set of control parameters are then adjusted to reduce a determined instability in the thermodynamics of the surface layer.
