A wire terminating system and method which allows for determining the quality of a wire termination. The method includes: terminating the terminal to the wire; monitoring the thermal data of the termination of the terminal to the wire with one or more thermal sensors; and comparing the monitored thermal data to stored thermal data to determine if the termination of the terminal to the wire is defective. The system includes a wire termination apparatus with a thermal sensor is positioned proximate a wire termination zone to acquire thermal data of the termination of the terminal to the wire. The thermal sensor monitors the thermal data of the termination of the terminal to the wire to determine if the termination of the terminal to the wire is defective.

System and method to determine quality of termination of wire using thermal characteristics

A crimp machine is provided and includes an anvil having a lower die having a lower forming surface. The anvil is configured to support a crimp barrel of a terminal that receives a wire. The crimp machine includes a press having an upper die having an upper forming surface. The press is movable relative to the anvil during a crimping process to connect the crimp barrel to the wire. A crimp zone is defined between the upper forming surface and the lower forming surface. The crimp machine includes a vision system positioned to view the crimp zone. The vision system includes an imaging device configured to image the crimp barrel of the terminal and the wire. The vision system operates the imaging device to capture an image prior to the crimping process for performing a validation pre-check prior to the crimping process.

A wire terminating apparatus and method which allows for determining the quality of a wire termination. The method includes terminating the wire, monitoring the thermal properties of the termination with one or more thermal sensors and comparing the monitored thermal properties to stored thermal properties to determine if the termination is defective. If the termination is defective, the termination is discarded. The apparatus includes a wire termination zone. A thermal sensor is mounted on the wire terminating apparatus proximate the wire termination zone. The thermal sensor monitors the thermal properties of the termination to determine if the termination is defective.

A method of removing a foil shield from a cable includes positioning the cable proximate a heating source, monitoring a characteristic of the cable or the heating source with at least one sensor, heating the foil shield in a designated area to weaken the foil shield, and removing an outer insulation of the cable and the foil shield.

Apparatus to determine quality of termination of wire using thermal characteristics

A die clearance monitoring system includes a light source, a light detector, and a controller. The light source is disposed along a front side of a die set of a crimping device and emits light towards the die set. The die set includes a first crimp die and a second crimp die that engage and crimp an object along a crimp stroke. The light detector is disposed along a rear side of the die set. The light detector receives the emitted light from the light source that traverses across the die set through a gap defined between the first and second crimp dies and generates light absorption data based on the emitted light that is received. The controller is communicatively connected to the light detector. The controller processes the light absorption data to determine a relative spacing between the first crimp die and the second crimp die.
