A glass-ceramic that includes: SiOfrom 40 mol % to 80 mol %; AlOfrom 3 mol % to 20 mol %; BOfrom 3 mol % to 50 mol %; WOplus MoOfrom 1 mol % to 18 mol %; FeOplus MnOfrom 0.1 mol % to 2 mol %; and RO from 0 mol % to 15 mol %. The RO is one or more of LiO, NaO, KO, RbO and CsO. Further, RO—AlOranges from −12 mol % to +4 mol %.

Iron- and manganese-doped tungstate and molybdate glass and glass-ceramic articles

Devices, apparatuses, and methods are disclosed that include a glass or glass ceramic substrate with a bleached region and an unbleached region. Examples include a substrate with a region that transmits IR wavelength light, and a region that is substantially opaque to IR light. Examples include additional opacity in some or all regions to visible wavelength light and/or UV wavelength light.

Glass ceramic devices and methods with tunable infrared transmittance

A group of glass compositions in the LiO—AlO—SiO—BOfamily that can be chemically strengthened in single or multiple ion exchange baths containing at least one of NaNOand KNOfor a short time (2-4 hours) to develop a deep depth of layer (DOL). In some instances, the DOL is at least 70 μm; in others, at least about 100 μm. The ion exchanged glasses have a high damage resistance (indentation fracture toughness ranging form greater than 10 kgf to greater than 50 kgf) that is better than or at least comparable to that of sodium aluminosilicate glasses.

Chemically strengthenable lithium aluminosilicate glasses with inherent damage resistance

An ion exchangeable glass having a high degree of resistance to damage caused by abrasion, scratching, indentation, and the like. The glass comprises alumina, BO, and alkali metal oxides, and contains boron cations having three-fold coordination. The glass, when ion exchanged, has a Vickers crack initiation threshold of at least 10 kilogram force (kgf).

Zircon compatible, ion exchangeable glass with high damage resistance

A glass having from greater than or equal to about 0.1 mol. % to less than or equal to about 20 mol. % HoO, and one or more chromophores selected from V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Se, Pr, Nd, Er, Yb, and combinations thereof. The amount of HoO(mol. %) is greater than or equal to 0.7(CeO(mol. %)+PrO(mol. %)+ErO(mol. %)). The glass can include one or more fluorescent ions selected from Cu, Sn, Ce, Eu, Tb, Tm, and combinations thereof in addition to, or in place of the chromophores. The glass can also include multiple fluorescent ions.

Multichroic glasses

Embodiments of a glass-based article including a first surface and a second surface opposing the first surface defining a thickness (t) of about 3 millimeters or less (e.g., about 1 millimeter or less), and a stress profile, wherein all points of the stress profile between a thickness range from about 0·t up to 0.3·t and from greater than about 0.7·t up to t, comprise a tangent with a slope having an absolute value greater than about 0.1 MPa/micrometer, are disclosed. In some embodiments, the glass-based article includes a non-zero metal oxide concentration that varies along at least a portion of the thickness (e.g., 0·t to about 0.3·t) and a maximum central tension in the range from about 80 MPa to about 100 MPa. In some embodiments, the concentration of metal oxide or alkali metal oxide decreases from the first surface to a value at a point between the first surface and the second surface and increases from the value to the second surface. The concentration of the metal oxide may be about 0.05 mol % or greater or about 0.5 mol % or greater throughout the thickness. Methods for forming such glass-based articles are also disclosed.

Glazing, such as for vehicles, includes a sheet of glass-ceramic that has different regions with different transmission properties, including a first visually clear region that blocks infrared, a second visually clear region that allows transmission of infrared, and a third colored region.

Articles including glass and/or glass-ceramic and methods of making the same

A strengthened glass having a stress profile that differs from error-function and parabolic profiles. Stress relaxation and thermal annealing/diffusion effects, which occur at longer ion exchange and/or anneal times increase the depth of compression of the surface layer. A method of achieving these effects is also provided.

S-shaped stress profiles and methods of making

Ion exchangeable glasses containing SiO, AlO, NaO, MgO, BO, and POare provided. The compressive stresses of these ion exchanged glasses are greater than 900 megapascals (MPa) at a depth of 45 or 50 microns (μm) with some glasses exhibiting a compressive stress of at least 1 gigaPascals (GPa). The ion exchange rates of these glasses are much faster than those of other alkali aluminosilicate glasses and the ion exchanged glass is resistant damage to impact damage. A method of ion exchanging the glass is also provided.

Ion exchangeable glass containing boron and phosphorous

Glass articles including one or more 3D printed surface features attached to a surface of a substrate at a contact interface between the 3D printed surface feature and the surface. The 3D printed surface feature(s) include a glass or a glass-ceramic, a compressive stress region at an exterior perimeter surface of the 3D printed surface feature(s), and a central tension region interior of the compressive stress region. The 3D printed surface feature(s) may be formed of a contiguous preformed material 3D printed on a surface of a substrate. The compressive stress region of a 3D printed surface feature may be formed using an ion-exchange process.

Strengthened 3D printed surface features and methods of making the same

A glass-ceramic includes a silicate-containing glass and crystals within the silicate-containing glass. The crystals include non-stoichiometric tungsten and/or molybdenum sub-oxides, and the crystals are intercalated with dopant cations.

Articles including glass and/or glass-ceramics and methods of making the same

A laminate glass-ceramic article is provided that includes: a core glass layer having a first coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE); and a plurality of clad glass-ceramic layers, each having a CTE that is lower than or equal to the first CTE of the core glass layer. A first of the clad glass-ceramic layers is laminated to a first surface of core glass layer and a second of the clad glass-ceramic layers is laminated to a second surface of the core glass layer. Further, a total thickness of the plurality of clad glass-ceramic layers is from about 0.05 mm to about 0.5 mm. In addition, each of the glass-ceramic layers includes: an alumino-boro-silicate glass, 0 mol %≤MoO≤15 mol %, and 0 mol %≤WO≤15 mol %, the WO(mol %) plus the MoO(mol %) is from 0.7 mol % to 19 mol %.

Laminate glass ceramic articles with UV-and NIR-blocking characteristics and methods of making the same

The embodiments described herein relate to low temperature moldable sheet forming glass compositions and glass articles formed from the same. In various embodiments, the glass composition comprises from about 60 mol. % to about 67 mol. % SiO, from about 6 mol. % to about 11 mol. % BO, from about 4.5 mol. % to about 11 mol. % LiO, AlO, NaO, and KO. The glass composition also includes greater than about 2 mol. % RO, where RO are divalent metal oxides, and RO from about 14 mol. % to about 20 mol. %, where RO are alkali metal oxides. The glass composition also has a glass transition temperature Tof less than about 500&#xb0; C., a softening point of less than about 650&#xb0; C., and a coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of less than about 85&#xd7;10K.

Low temperature moldable sheet forming glass compositions

The embodiments described herein relate to glass articles that include mechanically durable glass compositions having high liquidus viscosity. The glass articles may include glass compositions having from 50 mol. % to 80 mol. % SiO; from 7 mol. % to 25 mol. % AlO; from 2 mol. % to about 14 mol. % LiO; 0.4 mol. % PO; and less than or equal to 0.5 mol. % ZrO. The quantity (AlO(mol. %)-RO (mol. %)-RO (mol. %)) is greater than zero, where RO (mol. %) is the sum of the molar amounts of LiO, NaO, KO, RbO, and CsO in the glass composition and RO (mol. %) is the sum of the molar amounts of BeO, MgO, CaO, SrO, BaO, and ZnO in the glass composition. A molar ratio of (LiO (mol. %))/(RO (mol. %)) may be greater or equal to 0.5. In embodiments, the glass composition may include BO. The glass compositions are fusion formable and have high damage resistance.
