Methods and systems are provided for tracking and guiding a patient's clinically directed medication usage. Medicaments are placed in secure passive packaging that must be unlocked to enable dispensing of a dose or a set of doses. This packaging is designed to be difficult to open manually, and instead is designed to dispense only when used in combination with an unlocking device. The unlocking device is a separate device containing electronics, mechatronics or both, to unlock and dispense from the packaging and to track and guide usage. Together, the secure container and the unlocking device track medication usage, deter an excessive rate of patient usage, and deter unauthorized access to medication.

Method, system and apparatus for guiding and tracking medication usage

Methods, systems and apparatuses are provided for controlling and tracking patient access to medicaments. A patient is provided with medication in locked pill containers that must be unlocked before the patient can access medication. The patient is forced through an interactive session periodically with a master system, via a communicative intermediary, in order to obtain a valid passcode for each batch of medications. The patient may be assessed during each interaction with the master system. That assessment may include questions about status codes displayed on each medication container. These status codes may encode detail about the patient's pattern of accessing medication. A rate of medication usage can also be deduced from the rate at which the patient contacts the master system. After patient assessment, the master system may elect to not provide the patient with an access code, such as if the assessment indicates overuse of the medication.

One embodiment of the invention includes a comprehensive, technology-enhanced pharmacy system for patients following a complex medication to regimen comprising a treatment database, communications interface, and a personal medication cartridge configured to store medication and configured based on a treatment optimization algorithm. Another embodiment of the invention includes a medication administration apparatus comprising computer processing hardware, a user interface, an interface for receiving a personal medication cartridge including medication dose packets labeled with computer-readable identification or an RFID mechanism, a medication ejection mechanism, and a medication dispensing sensor. The medication administration apparatus utilizes medication dose packets and prescription information and identifies individual dose packets using computer-readable information or an RFID mechanism. The medication administration apparatus determines the location and prescription schedule for each dose packet within the medication administration apparatus and provides an indication when a dosing event is scheduled.

Conversely, the master system can elect to proactively contact the patient if the patient fails to make contact with the master system at an expected time, as this lack of contact suggests that the patient is underusing the medication and requires a reminder.

Systems and methods for detecting a likely misuse of a medicament by a user. The system includes a computer communicatively coupled with a dispensing device. The computer receives a usage pattern of a medicament by the user as indicated by the dispensing device and a result of a test correlating with an actual consumption of the medicament by the user. Based on the usage pattern, the computer computes an estimated result of a test corresponding to the at least one predetermined test. Based on a comparison between the estimated result and the test result, a determination is made as to whether the user has likely misused the medicament.

A modular interactive voice recognition ('IVR') overlay system and a method of processing calls. The system provides an application server, a plurality of agent workstations and a graphical user interface ('GUI') to allow a hybrid approach to processing calls using an automated IVR and live agents. The system and method allow a single agent to process multiple calls simultaneously and is compatible with existing IVR systems and can be implemented as an add-on to existing IVR systems.

A method, system and apparatus for controlling patient access to medicaments are disclosed. A method, system and apparatus can include an interfacing system such as an IVR system that can receive identifying data from a user of a medicament dispensing device. The interfacing system can also communicate limited-use access authorization data to the user via a communicative intermediary. The limited-use access authorization data enables the dispensing device to dispense a medicament up to a certain limit in response to entering the access authorization data into the dispensing device. The dispensing device may not be connected to a network, but is capable of computing and storing a limited-use access authorization data as well as validating an inputted access authorization data.
