A communication system optimizes system performance by selectively managing which mobile stations (MSs) are to serve as test MSs. The test MSs report system operating parameters in order to detect sleeping cells, coverage holes, or other flaws in system coverage or in order to determine an impact of a change in an access network configuration. The communication system further provides for end-to-end messaging between the test MSs and network servers via an access network and a core network, thereby permitting network elements that are best able to perform system optimization to control the monitoring, measuring, and reporting by the MSs. To minimize system and user inconvenience, reporting by a test MS further may be based on one or more of whether the MS is in an area of low mobility, has an acceptable power source output level, and is operating in a cell with an acceptable load level.

Method and apparatus for mobile station management and system

The invention relates to access management in a radio communication system. A subscriber unit () transmits an access message to a base station (). A Radio Access Controller (RNC) () receives information of the access request. The RNC () comprises an interference characteristic processor () which determines an interference characteristic associated with the subscriber unit (). The interference characteristic may include an inter-cell interference factor and an intra-cell orthogonality factor determined as a function of the distance between the base station and the subscriber unit and/or based on subscriber unit measurements of pilot signals from the selected base station () and neighbouring base stations (). The interference characteristic processor () is coupled to a resource requirement processor () which determines a resource requirement for achieving a desired signal to interference ratio for the requested service in response to the interference characteristic. The RNC () further comprises an access controller () which accepts or rejects the request in response to the determined resource requirement.

Apparatus and method of radio access management for a radio communication system

The invention relates to a method and apparatus for setting pilot signal transit powers in a CDMA system. Subscriber units () perform pilot signal measurement measurements and transmits these to a receiver (). A processor () determines a ranking factor for each cell () at least partly dependent on the pilot signal measurement and a cell overlap condition of the subscriber unit () during measurements. The processor () ranks the cells () according to the ranking factor, and sets the pilot signal transmit power of at least one cell in response to the ranking of the cells by adjusting a power amplifier (). The cell overlap condition is determined as the handover state of the subscriber unit () or as the number of cells, which can be received by the subscriber unit () during the measurement The invention is applicable to 3rd generation cellular communication systems.

Method and apparatus for setting pilot signal transmit powers

A remote unit ( ) monitors a control channel for a base station ( ) and sends a probe message ( ) to the base station ( ). The base station ( ) forwards the probe message with location information ( ) to a controller ( ). The controller ( ) determines an approximate distance for the remote unit ( ). Based on the approximate distance, the controller ( ) determines at least one additional site. A channel assignment message ( or ) is forwarded to the remote unit ( ), which message includes one or more traffic channels associated with at least one of the base station ( ) and the at least one additional site.

Method of forwarding channel assignments for one or more traffic channels

The present invention provides a method for extending the cell radius between a mobile station (,) and a base station (,). A propagation delay is determined between the mobile station (,) and the base station (,). A transmit time offset is determined for the mobile station (,). The transmit time offset is based at least in part upon the propagation delay. Information is then transmitted between the mobile station (,) and the base station (,) at the transmit time offset.
