This document describes low-footprint dual-band ultra-wideband (UWB) antenna modules. A described UWB antenna module may be used as an internal part of a mobile device (e.g., cellphone, tablet, and/or other mobile devices). The UWB antenna module includes a multi-layer dual-band antenna that includes a set of multi-layer patch antennas, each patch antenna including a layer with a conductive ground plate, a feeding plate layer, and a parasitic strip layer with two parasitic strips, one configured to resonate at a frequency within a first band of the dual-band antenna, the other configured to resonate at a frequency within a second band of the dual-band antenna. The parasitic strips are electromagnetically coupled to the feeding plate.

Low-footprint dual-band ultra-wideband antenna modules

Foldable wireless electronic devices that communicate wirelessly are provided that can attenuate the cavity modes created when the devices are folded. The electronic devices may utilize prescribed housing dimensions, ohmic contacts, and capacitive coupling to attenuate the cavity modes. There may be minimal impact on the industrial design of the devices. The radiation efficiency and VSWR of the antennas of the electronic devices may not be degraded. Also, the frequency of the cavity modes may be controlled such that the cavity modes are resonated out of frequencies of interest, and the severity and occurrence of RF energy absorption may be attenuated or eliminated. Users of the foldable wireless electronic devices may have increased satisfaction as the devices may perform better while still having desirable aesthetics and appearance.

A method and a mobile device that provides near field communication and wireless powering capabilities by coupling a one-piece metal back and a metal band to a device housing to form a device. The device is configured to provide at least one antenna keep-out area. The metal band is adapted to be a dual-band antenna that is coupled to a coil. The coil, operable as one of a near field communication coil and a wireless power transmission coil, forms an overlapping trace with the dual-band antenna along at least one physical area. The coil and the dual-band antenna are positioned in the antenna keepout area and around the perimeter of the device. The method further includes forming at least two turns in the coil. At least one diplexing component is coupled both to the coil and to the dual-band antenna.

Near field communication on a seamless metal band and metal backed device

An antenna system for implementation in a wireless communication system such as a mobile device, and a wireless communication system employing such an antenna system, and a related methodology, are disclosed herein. In one example embodiment, a mobile device includes a display, a chassis, and one or more electrical components. The display is provided along a front surface of the mobile device, and the chassis has first and second cavities provided along a rear surface of the mobile device, the rear surface being substantially opposite the front surface. Further, the one or more electrical components is or are supported in between the display and the chassis, and the one or more electrical components provide excitation signals to one or both of the first and second cavities so as to cause electrical fields in accordance with a plurality of modes to occur respectively within the cavities at multiple frequencies, respectively.

Wireless communication system with multi-mode cavity antennas

A communication device and method mitigates specific absorption rate (SAR) exposure of a user. A radio frequency (RF) transmitter amplifies outgoing communication signals to a total radiated power (TRP) level. A matching network electrically connected to the RF transmitter receives the outgoing communication signals. The matching network divides the TRP level of received, outgoing communication signals to a first power level at a first network output and to a second power level at a second network output. First and second antennas electrically connected respectively to the first and second network output radiate the divided, outgoing communication signals at the first and second power levels. A SAR controller communicatively connected to the matching network controls the matching network to shift transmit power between the first and second antennas while maintaining TRP level to reduce SAR exposure of the user.
