A hybrid earth-boring bit comprising a bit body having a central axis, at least one, preferably three fixed blades, depending downwardly from the bit body, each fixed blade having a leading edge, and at least one rolling cutter, preferably three rolling cutters, mounted for rotation on the bit body. A rolling cutter is located between two fixed blades.

Hybrid drill bit and design method

Cutting elements for earth-boring tools include one or more recesses and/or one or more protrusions in a cutting face of a volume of superabrasive material. The superabrasive material may be disposed on a substrate. The cutting face may be non-planar. The recesses and/or protrusions may include one or more linear segments. The recesses and/or protrusions may comprise discrete features that are laterally isolated from one another. The recesses and/or protrusions may have a helical configuration. The volume of superabrasive material may comprise a plurality of thin layers, at least two of which may differ in at least one characteristic. Methods of forming cutting elements include the formation of such recesses and/or protrusions in and/or on a cutting face of a volume of superabrasive material. Earth-boring tools include such cutting elements, and methods of forming earth-boring tools include attaching such a cutting element to a tool body.

Earth-boring tools include a cutting element positioned on a drill bit body at a radial distance from a longitudinal axis thereof. At least two formation-engaging elements are positioned at the same radial distance from the longitudinal axis as the cutting element. The formation-engaging elements are recessed from a cutting profile of the cutting element by a distance within about 10% of d, wherein d=(&#x3b1;*x)/(1800*y), where &#x3b1; is an angle between the formation-engaging element and the cutting element, x is a rate of penetration of the drill bit body, and y is a rotation speed of the drill bit body. Additional earth-boring tools include at least one cutting element and at least two formation-engaging elements recessed from a cutting profile of the at least one cutting element at a common angle. Methods relate to forming such earth-boring tools.

Wellbore cleaning bits include a bit body, at least one cutting structure on the bit body, and a shank configured to attach the bit body to a drill string. Drilling systems for cleaning wellbores include a wellbore cleaning bit coupled to a drill string. The wellbore cleaning bit may include a casing bit body and a shank attached to the casing bit body and the drill string. A casing bit may be attached to a shank having a connection portion configured for attachment to a drill string to form wellbore cleaning bits for cleaning at least a section of a wellbore. Furthermore, a casing bit may be advanced into a wellbore using a drill string to clean a wellbore.

In one aspect, a removable module or sub is provided for use in drilling a wellbore, which sub in one embodiment may include a body having a pin end and a box end configured for coupling between two members of a drill string, the body having a bore therethrough for flow of a fluid, and a sensor disposed in a pressure-sealed chamber in one of the pin end and the box end and configured to provide measurements relating to a downhole condition.

Monitoring drilling performance in a sub-based unit

Drilling assemblies include a drill bit and a reamer apparatus in which the drill bit is configured to rotate in rotational direction about a longitudinal axis of a drill string and the reamer apparatus is configured to rotate in an opposite rotational direction about the longitudinal axis. Methods of forming a drilling assembly include configuring a drill bit to drill a subterranean formation when rotating in a counter-clockwise direction and configuring a reamer apparatus to ream a wellbore within the subterranean formation when rotating in a clockwise direction. Methods of drilling wellbores in subterranean formations include rotating a drill bit in a first rotational direction about a longitudinal axis of a drill string to drill a wellbore and rotating a reamer apparatus in an opposite rotational direction about the longitudinal axis of the drill string to ream the wellbore.

A tungsten carbide compact of an earth boring bit has a cutting tip that is generally chisel-shaped with substantially flat flanks converging to an elongated crest. One of the flanks is smaller and has a greater included angle relative to the axis of the compact than the other flank. Shoulders extend from opposite ends of the crest. One shoulder has a radius of curvature that is smaller than the other shoulder.

Enhanced stabilization is provided for an eccentric reaming tool when a pilot borehole is undersized with respect to a following pilot stabilization pad (PSP). Alternatively, offset of a rotational axis of at least a portion of the assembly including the reaming tool is employed to accomplish stabilization of the reaming tool. In either case, a reamed diameter larger than a physical diameter of the reaming tool may be drilled. More specifically, an enlarged PSP relative to pilot bit diameter or PSP offset or even pilot bit offset is employed in order to engage a PSP with the wall of a pilot borehole of greater diameter than a physical diameter of the pilot bit. The PSP or pilot drill bit, or both, may be laterally offset, angularly offset, or a combination thereof in order to effect substantially continuous PSP contact with the pilot borehole wall.

Enhanced offset stabilization for eccentric reamers

A rotary-type earth-boring drag bit with cutters oriented at varied rake angles and methods for designing such drag bits. Specifically, cutters that are located sequentially adjacent radial distances from a longitudinal axis of the drill bit have cutting faces that are oriented at rake angles that differ from one another. These cutters may be located on the same blade of the drag bit or on different blades of the drag bit. The rake angles at which the cutting faces of these cutters are oriented may be based, at least in part, on the relative radial distances these cutters are spaced from the longitudinal axis of the drag bit, on the vertical positions of these cutters along the longitudinal axis of the drag bit, or in response to actual or simulated evaluations of the use of the drag bit to drill a subterranean formation.

Methods for designing rotary drill bits exhibiting sequences of substantially continuously variable cutter backrake angles

A method and apparatus for reaming or enlarging a borehole with the ability to drill cement, cement float equipment, and debris out of a casing without substantial damage to the casing interior or the reaming apparatus. The reaming apparatus also provides enhanced protection from contact with the casing wall for selected structural features and elements thereof.

Rotary drill bits exhibiting sequences of substantially continuously variable cutter backrake angles

A cutter and a drill bit having such cutters for drilling subterranean formations including a superabrasive table formed on an end face of a supporting substrate, there being an interface between the table and the end face including a topographic configuration including at least one, and preferably a plurality of, annular arcuate surfaces centered about the centerline of the cutter and at least one recessed region or groove extending across a substantial portion of the end face. The topographic configuration of the end face is of an orientation and radial width sufficient to accommodate resultant loading of the cutting edge of the cutter throughout a variety of angles with vectors normal to the surface at a variety of angles such that at least one normal vector is aligned substantially parallel to the resultant loading on the cutting edge. The topographic configuration of the end face, preferably including at least one recessed portion, further provides a cutter in which the superabrasive table and the substrate are less prone to cracking, spalling, and catastrophic failure.
