The present invention provides an apparatus for determining a seat belt tension is within a proper range. The apparatus is designed to be easily adapted to existing vehicle safety belt systems. Three points of contact with the safety belt allow the apparatus to be used in portable applications including installing child seats. Generally, two of the contact points support the belt while the third contact point is accomplished using a member responsive to the tension of the seat belt. The response of the member is in communication with a device to indicate the amount of tension present in the seat belt. A visual or audible signal is provided to the operator when sufficient tension has been reached and maintained. The apparatus can be mechanical or electro-mechanical in nature. The apparatus provides the general public with the capability to periodically or continuously monitor the seat belt tension and can be used to secure a child seat alerting the operator when the belt tension is within or outside predefined installation limits.

Seat belt tension indicator

A sensor for a vehicle belt retractor includes a housing, an excitation mass, a locking mechanism which locks the belt retractor, and a lever arm connected to the housing. The lever arm is in contact with the excitation mass and engages the locking mechanism when the excitation mass moves relative to the housing. The sensor further includes a damper that restricts vertical displacement of the excitation mass relative to the housing.

A load management system and method for controlling the activation sequence and times of activation of motor vehicle occupant restraints when a high g event, such as a crash, occurs. The system includes a microprocessor that processes inputs from a number of devices including seat weight sensor, an occupant spatial position detector, a buckle status detector, a belt sensor. The microprocessor is driven by a load management procedure that includes a high g event routine that controls the activation sequence of restraints so that the automatic locking restraint is first activated, followed by the pre-tensioner and then by the air bag. The load management procedure also includes an enable/disable procedure that controls the enabling and disabling of the restraints according to a number of variables including occupant weight, seat buckle status and belt extension status.

Load management system and method for motor vehicle restraints

A weight measurement system for automatically calibrating weight sensors installed on a motor vehicle seat. The system performs a calibrate operation whenever a valid weight measurement window is found. A valid weight measurement window is defined by the seat being empty, an associated door being open and an associated seat buckle being unlatched. The system operates in a factory install mode to establish a reference zero set value and in a diagnostic mode to establish a temporary zero set value that reflects drift of the weight sensors. The temporary zero set value is used by a weight management program to control occupant restraint devices. The weight sensor has an integral body with two lands connected by an elastomeric beam. The elastomeric beam has a pair of opposed surfaces that define a region of minimum thickness and one or more regions of maximum thickness. A resistive strain gauge element is disposed on the region of minimum thickness. The system measures changes in the resistance of the weight sensor caused by weight of the seat.

Weight measurement system, method and weight sensor

A microstrain sensor is provided for measuring deformation, and indirectly, other parameters such as acceleration, temperature, pressure, and force. Rather than providing several discreet resistance paths, the microstrain sensor utilizes input and output conductors connected to a single piece of film through which current travels to indicate resistance. The film provides superior resistance to external effects, such as temperature gradients, that decrease the accuracy of the sensor's readings. Such sensors may be easily adapted for use in situations in which opposing stresses are present, such as dually constrained members, by disposing separate or unitary film sections on opposite sides of a zero stress point, such as a central plane of a fixed-guided beam. Such sensors may be utilized in many different applications, including automotive safety systems. The automotive safety system may utilize sensors to measure weight-in-seat, frame deformation, acceleration, seat belt tension, and other parameters in order to properly control safety elements of the vehicle such as seat belts and airbag systems. Such a sensor may be installed in a seat belt buckle to indicate the lath/unlatch characteristic of the seat belt, as well as the tension in the belt.

System and method for microstrain measurement

A system and device for managing the restraints available for vehicle occupants that uses fluidic torque conversion to provide an adaptive variable load limiting for the primary occupant safety restraint. The fluidic torque conversion of this invention can be variably controlled through the use of an electro/mechanical flow control device. The flow control is preferably coupled to one or more sensors, including occupant weight, occupant position, seat position, low &ldquo;g&rdquo;, high &ldquo;g&rdquo;, and belt displacement/latching sensors. This invention is adapted to be responsive to the vehicles interior safety devices, including front air bags, side air bags, seat back pivots, head rests, collapsible steering wheel, and positioning of the dash board and/or vehicle instrumentation. This invention is a re-usable system. This invention can be applied to any rotational, pivotal or telescoping safety mechanism or device and by using hydro load limiting and energy absorbing management contributes to reduced occupant chest, back, neck or leg injuries as a result of a vehicle impact event.

Adaptive variable load limited for primary occupant safety restraint

An occupant seat belt presenter is provided to extend or present an unbuckled seat belt restraint or web to the occupant, thereby making it visible and easily accessible for buckling. This seat belt presenter is provided with a powered presenter drive which moves the seat belt web forward or rearward based on signals received from a controller. The controller controls the operation of the seat belt presenter based on such inputs as whether the door is open and whether the seat belt has been buckled. This controller is adapted to be integrated into the seat and to be compatible with other vehicle safety features. The seat belt restraint is allowed to extend and to retract freely through a web guide attached to the presenter drive. This invention also provides that the belt web restraint can be easily removed from the web guide in the event of a system malfunction, thereby providing an override to the controller.

Occupant belt presenter

A sensor designed and adapted to operate with vehicle restraints whose primary purpose is to sense low 'g' accelerations and vehicle tilting, the results of which lead to the activation or deactivation of the primary occupant restraints through a control module. This invention specifically addresses the reliability of vehicle acceleration and tilt sensors. By employing fewer numbers of components and by having a fewer number of failure mechanisms this invention provides a sensor of increased reliability and lower manufacturing cost. Furthermore, this sensor invention restrains effect z-axis accelerations often encountered when a vehicle is merely traveling over rough roads. This invention employs innovative detector technology, alternatively using an IR detector or a Hall Effect Device detector.

Single point acceleration sensor

A buckle for receiving and locking a tongue connected to a vehicle safety belt, the buckle comprising: a locking element for locking a tongue to the buckle; a sensor to sense locking of the tongue to the buckle; and an indicator arrangement actuable by an output of the sensor to indicate whether the buckle is in a locked or an unlocked condition.
