The present disclosure provides a process for the production of 4-azidosulfonylphthalic anhydride. In an embodiment, a process is provided and includes chlorinating 4-sulfophthalic acid trisodium salt (1), under solvent reaction conditions, to form a dissolved 4-chlorosulfonylphthalic anhydride (2) and an insoluble sodium chloride. The process includes first removing the insoluble sodium chloride from the dissolved 4-chlorosulfonylphthalic anhydride to form an isolated 4-chlorosulfonylphthalic anhydride. The process includes reacting, under solvent reaction conditions, the isolated 4-chlorosulfonylphthalic anhydride with sodium azide to form a dissolved 4-azidosulfonylphthalic anhydride and an insoluble sodium chloride. The process includes second removing the insoluble sodium chloride from the dissolved 4-azidosulfonylphthalic anhydride to form an isolated 4-azidosulfonylphthalic anhydride. The process includes retrieving a solid 4-azidosulfonylphthalic anhydride (3) from the isolated 4-azidosulfonylphthalic anhydride.

A method for making a composite polyamide membrane comprising a porous support and a polyamide layer, including the steps of: i) applying a polar solution comprising a polyfunctional amine monomer and a non-polar solution comprising a polyfunctional acyl halide monomer to a surface of a porous support and interfacially polymerizing the monomers to form a polyamide layer; and ii) exposing the thin film polyamide layer to nitrous acid; wherein the method is characterized by at least one of: conducting the interfacial polymerization of step i) in the presence of a subject amine compound, or applying a subject amine compound to the interfacially polymerized polyamide layer prior to step ii), wherein the subject amine compound is different from the polyfunctional acyl halide and polyfunctional amine monomers.

A method for making a composite polyamide membrane comprising a porous support and a polyamide layer, including the steps of: i) applying a polar solution comprising of polyfunctional amine monomer and a non-polar solution comprising a polyfunctional acyl halide monomer to a surface of a porous support and interfacially polymerizing the monomers to form a polyamide layer; and ii) exposing the thin film polyamide layer to nitrous acid; wherein the method is characterized by at least one of: conducting the interfacial polymerization of step i) in the presence of a subject amine-reactive compound, or applying a subject amine-reactive compound to the interfacially polymerized polyamide layer prior to step ii), wherein the subject amine-reactive compound is different from the polyfunctional acyl halide and polyfunctional amine monomers and is represented by the following formula:
