A medical treatment system, such as peritoneal dialysis system, may include control and other features to enhance patient comfort and ease of use. For example, a peritoneal dialysis system may include patient line state detector for detecting whether a patient line is primed before it is to be connected to the patient. The patient line state detector can also the ability to detect whether a patient line has been properly mounted for priming. Both patient line presence/absence and fill state can be determined using an optical system, e.g., one that employs a single optical sensor.

Medical treatment system and methods using a plurality of fluid lines

A medical infusion fluid handling system, such as an automated peritoneal dialysis system, may be arranged to de-cap and connect one or more lines (such as solution lines) with one or more spikes or other connection ports on a fluid handling cassette. This feature may reduce a likelihood of contamination since no human interaction is required to de-cap and connect the one or more lines and the one or more spikes. For example, the automated peritoneal dialysis system may include a carriage arranged to receive the one or more lines each having a connector end and a cap. The carriage may move along a first direction so as to move the connector ends of the one or more lines along the first direction, and a cap stripper may be arranged to engage with the caps on the one or more lines on the carriage. The cap stripper may move in a second direction transverse to the first direction, as well as to move with the carriage along the first direction.

Fluid line autoconnect apparatus and methods for medical treatment system

The present teachings provide a device to change the pressure in a chamber of a heart and methods of making and using thereof. One aspect of the present teachings provides a device comprising a frame (for example, a metallic frame) and a scaffold. The frame of the device has a distal flange portion, a shunt portion, and a proximal flange portion. The distal and proximal flange portions can align with the shunt portion and form an elongated first profile. At least one of the distal and proximal flange portions can bend radially away from the shunt portion to form a flange like profile. The scaffold includes one or more than covering layers and encloses parts of the frame or the entire frame. The covering layer provides a barrier between the biological matter and the frame of the device. The scaffold is designed to control and direct tissue growth, for example, by stimulating an irritation response and inducing cell proliferation around the retention flange and/or discouraging cell proliferation inside the shunt portion.

Devices and methods for treating heart failure

The present teachings provide a device to close a ductus arteriosus percutaneously. One aspect of the present teachings provides a device comprising at least one flange portion configured to be positioned against a vascular wall outside one end of a ductus arteriosus, and a body portion configured to be positioned inside the ductus arteriosus. The body portion of the device has a length adjustable in order for the device to fit inside patients with various ductus arteriosus lengths. The at least one flange portion of the device has pivotability in order for at least one flange to deflect from the longitudinal axis of the body portion so that the deployed device can be positioned at a treatment site allowing the discs to sit flat against the vascular tissue to promote closure while avoiding disruption of flow within the pulmonary artery and aorta or applying excess pressure to the surrounding vascular tissue. The body portion of the device could also at least partially block the ductus arteriosus, and thereby reduce or obstruct blood flow through the ductus arteriosus. The device includes a delivery profile and a deployment profile. Another aspect of the present teachings provides methods of using a device of the present teachings.

Devices and methods for treating patent ductus arteriosus

The present teachings provide a device and methods of making and using thereof. Specifically, one aspect of the present teachings provides a self-expandable device with a braided structure comprising a shunt, a distal retention flange, and a proximal retention flange. Upon the device being deployed at a treatment location, the distal retention flange or the proximal retention flange transitions to have a diameter that is greater than the diameter of the shunt portion. And the shunt portion has a braid angle &#x3b8;. Another aspect of the present teachings provide that the ratio of flange/shunt diameter equals or greater than 1/sin &#x3b8;. Yet another aspect of the present teachings provides an axial constraining mechanism to reinforce the shunt portion.

A device for implanting into an atrial septum of a patient. In some embodiments, the device has a core region to be disposed in an opening in the atrial septum; a distal retention region adapted to engage tissue on a left atrial side of the septal wall; a proximal retention region adapted to engage tissue on a right atrial side of the septal wall; and a retrieval region comprising a plurality of retrieval members, each retrieval member comprising a connector at a proximal end, the connector being adapted to connect to a delivery system. The device has a delivery configuration and a deployed configuration, the core region, distal retention region and proximal retention region each having a smaller diameter in the delivery configuration than in the deployed configuration, the retrieval member connectors being disposed proximal to and radially outward from the opening in the deployed configuration.

The present disclosure relates to devices and methods for implanting a prosthesis into a heart of a mammal, such as a person. The disclosure includes a prosthesis that acts as a pressure vent between the left and right atria of the heart. The disclosure also includes a mounting tool for mounting the prosthesis onto a loading tool, the loading tool useful for loading the prosthesis onto a device for delivering the prosthesis into the patient's heart. Control devices and methods for using these devices are also disclosed. The intracardiac pressure vents disclosed allow sufficient flow from the left atrium to the right atrium to relieve elevated left atrial pressure and resulting patient symptoms. The devices also limit the amount of flow from the right atrium to the left atrium to minimize the potential for thrombi or other embolic material from entering arterial circulation.

Methods for deploying a prosthesis

The present teachings generally relate a delivery system having an implant retention mechanism. Specifically, the delivery system includes a delivery sheath, a delivery catheter, and a flexible or a rigid implant retention mechanism. The flexible implant retention mechanism includes an implant retention string having a fixed end and a free end where the free end extends from the fixed end, crosses a retention outlet of an implant, and extends proximally through a lumen of the delivery sheath. The rigid implant retention mechanism includes an implant retention wire having a fixed end and a free end where the free end extends from the fixed end, crosses a retention outlet of an implant, and extends proximally through a lumen of the delivery sheath.

Implant retention attachment and method of use

The present teachings provide devices to change the pressure in a chamber of a heart and methods of making and using thereof. One aspect of the present teachings provides a device comprising a distal portion, a middle portion, and a proximal portion. The distal portion and proximal portion of the device are configured to be deployed inside the left and right atrium respectively with a minimum contact with the septal tissue. The middle portion of the device is configured to secure the device across an aperture on the atrial septum. The device further includes at least one retrieval portion with a plurality of struts. The distal end of the struts is connected with a proximal end of the proximal portions. The proximal end of the struts come together at a location near the axial center of the device. The radial expansion of the proximal portion will lead to the radially outward movement of the struts. And a radially inward movement of the struts will cause the proximal portion of the device to collapse radially. The device includes a delivery profile and a deployment profile.

Retrievable devices for treating heart failure

The present disclosure relates to improved capabilities for stabilizing and regulating atrial pressure with a shunt in the atrial septum or a stent in the coronary sinus. The disclosure also includes sensing, monitoring, drug therapy and control capabilities to provide improved treatment of patients with heart disease and other cardiac related conditions.

Atrial pressure regulation with control, sensing, monitoring and therapy delivery

Devices and methods for treating heart disease by normalizing elevated blood pressure in the left and right atria of a heart of a mammal are disclosed. Devices may include an adjustable hydraulic diameter and/or a removable and/or replaceable shunt portion. Devices may include absorbable materials, the absorption of which directly or indirectly causes alterations of the fluid flow capacities the devices.
