A rolling mill control system and method includes use of sensors located between rolling mill stands to directly measure metal sheet or plate flatness, thickness profile, position, and the camber of the rolls in the mill. A feedback loop control system adjusts or adapts rolling mill control mechanisms to control the rolling process.

Method and apparatus for controlling metal strip profile during rolling with direct measurement of process parameters

Control of self-excited third octave vibration in a metal rolling mill can be achieved by adjusting the tension of the metal strip as it enters a stand. Self-excited third octave vibration can be detected and/or measured by one or more sensors. A high-speed tension adjustor can rapidly adjust the entry tension of the metal strip (e.g., as the metal strip enters a mill stand) to compensate for the detected self-excited third octave vibration. High-speed tension adjustors can include any combination of hydraulic or piezoelectric actuators coupled to the center roll of a bridle roll to rapidly raise or lower the roll and thus induce rapid tension adjustments in the strip. Other high-speed tension adjustors can be used.

Process damping of self-excited third octave mill vibration

A process of producing an article having a surface provided with an optical diffraction grating such that the surface generates visible color when illuminated with diffuse white light. The process involves deforming a starting material to produce the article having the surface and, during the deforming step, impressing a diffraction relief pattern on the surface by a tool provided with a bearing surface having a corresponding surface relief pattern of parallel lines that contacts the surface of the article under pressure. While the diffraction relief patter is being impressed, the surface is caused to slide in a direction of movement relative to the bearing surface of the tool. Process of producing diffraction gratings on the surface of articles

An apparatus and method for remotely measuring emissivity and hence temperature of a surface of an object. The apparatus includes a detector having a radiation receptor for measuring infra-red radiation, an integrating cavity surrounding the receptor for receiving radiation from a surface facing the cavity and delivering the radiation to the receptor, at least two sources of infra-red containing radiation (e.g. light from an incandescent lamp) within the integrating cavity positioned to produce separate beams of the radiation which strike the surface at different angles suitable for reflection to the receptor, and a processor for determining the temperature of the surface from the radiation measured by the detecting means. The use of at least two mutually angled radiation beams compensates for surface anisotropy of the surface whose temperature is to be measured. The infra-red containing radiation is modulated to cause an on/off fluctuation of the intensity of the radiation so that the component of the signal from the detector resulting from reflected radiation can be distinguished from the component due to radiation emitted from the surface due to its temperature. The radiation is preferably measured at two different wavelengths so that a ratio technique may be employed. The resulting measurements can be used to determine the reflectivity, and hence the emissivity, of the surface as well as the intensity of emitted radiation, so that accurate temperature measurements can be made from standard formulae used for optical pyrometry.

Apparatus and method for remote temperature measurement

Apparatus and method for inspecting surface quality of a moving sheet of metal illuminates a surface of the moving sheet by the use of at least two lamps. The region which is illuminated by the lamps is inspected by a sensing device. The angle of incidence for the light beams from the lamps are from the near and dark fields. The sensing device picks up highlighted or brightened portions of the sheet due to surface irregularities. By use of a multiplicity of lamps and a single sensing device, such as a video recorder, an inexpensive yet very sensitive system is provided for detecting irregularities in the surface of the moving sheet. The system may be observed by an operator to determine locations of irregularities and as well the system may be adapted to document locations on the moving sheet where the irregularities occur.
