A method and apparatus for concurrent introduction of molten steel and gas-fluidized chemical steel additives, such as chemical desulphurants, into a teeming ladle 10. Injection apparatus includes a lance 52 arranged to remain with the vessel. Introduction of gas-fluidized additives through a lance opening 81 is commenced while a charge of molten steel is introduced into the ladle. The lance is unobstructed at its discharge end and in one embodiment is carried directly by a discharge stopper 31'.

Method and apparatus for emptying bottle cars 22 of hot metal and slag. A rotatable bottle 24 is mounted to a railroad car for movement of molten iron between a blast furnace and a steel making facility such as a basic oxygen furnace or the like. To facilitate emptying the bottle, a section 32 of railroad track, shorter than the length between the wheels of the car, is moved transversely from beneath the bottle to one side of the car and the bottle rotated as much as 180.degree. to pour contents of the bottle from a central opening into a receiving ladle 14 below the track. The path of the contents passes through the area from which the track section was removed. Stops 50 prevent movement of the bottle car after the section has been moved.

Method and apparatus for emptying bottle cars

A method and apparatus for making steel in a basic oxygen furnace installation, in which water is sprayed from a central location within and at the open end of an exhaust hood 12 outwardly toward the inside hood surface to cool the hood and wet the off-gases during a blow. A ring-like spray manifold 22 is supported on an oxygen lance 14 for automatic insertion to the proper location in the hood, for removal with the lance, and for automatic operation concurrently with the supplying of oxygen.

Method and apparatus for cooling BOF hood paneling

The usual oxygen lance, and a coating lance, are disposed in upright and spaced-side-by-side relation for selective lowering into the BOF vessel when the latter is in the normal upright position it occupies for refinement of its metallic charge. Preferably, the coating lance is lowered into the vessel immediately after the latter has been charged with scrap and molten iron and moved to its upright position. At this time the oxygen lance is in standby position while refractory coating material is forced through the coating lance and outwardly of its nozzle to coat various areas of the vessel lining. Thereafter, the coating lance is withdrawn from the vessel and the oxygen lance is inserted and the refining process is begun. At this time, the coating lance is held in standby position.
