Described herein are systems and techniques for improving the transmission of data up a wellbore such that wellbore operations may be performed or controlled more efficiently. When a wellbore is drilled or otherwise used, sensors may be deployed in the wellbore to measure parameters that may include borehole pressure, annular pressure, weight-on-bit, torque-on-bit, temperature, or other borehole logging data, for example. Data sensed by the sensors or interpreted from received sensor data may be sent up-hole to electronics that may reside at the surface of the Earth. Since wellbore (borehole) logging data usually have moderate levels of continuity or consistency between respective samples, differences between data samples acquired over a period of time may be expected to have smaller amplitudes/deviations than the data samples themselves. As such, data compression can be achieved by transmitting data that identifies a difference between an initial data sample and a subsequent reference data sample.

High-reliability data compression and telemetry scheme for real-time logging data transmission

A method includes obtaining, by a downhole tool, a first shape of sensor data representing one or more characteristics of a wellbore, comparing, by the downhole tool, the first shape with a set of pre-determined reference shapes stored in a downhole memory to select a pre-determined reference shape that can be imposed on the first shape, calculating one or more delta values between the first shape and the selected pre-determined reference shape, and transmitting, by the downhole tool, the pre-determined reference shape and the delta values to a processor at a surface of the wellbore.

Methods for data compression and optimization for downhole telemetry

Electromagnetic telemetry systems, methods to obtain downhole signals indicative of a drilling operation, and drilling data acquisition systems are presented. An electromagnetic telemetry system includes a downhole transmitter configured to transmit signals indicative of whether the downhole transmitter is in a transmission mode to transmit drilling data, a drilling data acquisition system configured to receive the signals indicative of whether the downhole transmitter is in the transmission mode, and one or more remote nodes disposed around the hydrocarbon wellsite. Each respective remote node of the one or more remote nodes configured to operate in a first mode to periodically transmit data indicative of the signal strength to the drilling data acquisition system. Each respective remote node is also configured to operate in a second mode to acquire drilling data from the downhole transmitter, and wirelessly transmit the drilling data to the drilling data acquisition system.

Electromagnetic telemetry systems, methods to obtain downhole signals indicative of a drilling operation, and drilling data acquisition systems

A mud pulse telemetry tool includes a dampener for reducing shock and vibration. The mud pulse telemetry tool includes a housing having a shoulder formed along an inner surface thereof, the housing including an orifice formed therein. A piston assembly is longitudinally movable in the housing between a retracted position and an extended position. The piston assembly includes a poppet disposable in the orifice in the extended position and a piston connected to the poppet. The dampener is disposed longitudinally between the piston and the shoulder, the piston being movable in contact with the dampener when the piston assembly is in the extended position.

Compressible load shoulder for dampening shock in downhole telemetry tool

A system includes an electromagnetic logging tool that transmits an electromagnetic signal as the tool is conveyed along a borehole through a formation. The system further includes a processing system that measures a first signal level in response to the tool being at a first measured depth, determines a first conductance based on the first signal level, measures a second signal level in response to the tool being at a second measured depth greater than the first measured depth, the second measured depth and the first measured depth defining a formation interval there between, determines a second conductance based on the second signal level, and assigns a uniform resistivity value to the formation interval based on the first conductance and the second conductance.

Conductivity-depth transforms of electromagnetic telemetry signals

An electromagnetic telemetry system can be used for determining a resistivity of a portion of a wellbore drilled through a subterranean formation. For example, the electromagnetic telemetry system can include a computing device and a downhole transceiver positioned on a well tool in the wellbore. The computing device can receive, from the downhole transceiver, a signal indicating a load impedance across an electrically insulating segment of the downhole transceiver. The computing device can determine a resistivity associated with a portion of the wellbore based on the load impedance. The computing device can determine a corrected resistivity by modifying the resistivity associated with the portion of the wellbore using a correction factor.
