A switchable finger follower, including an inner lever and an outer lever. The outer lever is mounted for pivoting movement to the inner lever. A coupling device is located on one of the inner or outer levers and has a locking pin arranged to move between a locking position, in which the inner and outer levers are connected together for movement in an activation direction, and an unlocked position, in which the inner lever is pivotable relative to the outer lever. A coupling projection is located on the other of the inner or outer lever. The locking pin engages beneath the projection in the locking position, and the locking pin includes a flat at a defined flat height that contacts the coupling surface in the locking position and is selected from a number of locking pins having different flat heights to set a desired mechanical coupling device lash.

Mechanical lash control for a switchable roller finger follower

A switching oil gallery de-aeration arrangement for a switchable valve arrangement is provided, including a switching control valve that activates or deactivates the switchable valve arrangement. The switching control valve is movable from a first position, in which pressurized hydraulic fluid from a hydraulic lash adjuster fluid gallery flows to a passage on the hydraulic lash adjuster and through a switching hydraulic fluid gallery to a check valve such that pressurized hydraulic fluid from the hydraulic lash adjuster fluid gallery pressurizes the switching hydraulic fluid gallery and is released through the check valve, and a second position, in which pressurized hydraulic fluid having a higher pressure sufficient for carrying out a switching function of the switchable valve arrangement is delivered by the switching hydraulic fluid gallery via the second intersection to the second port.

Switching oil gallery de-aeration

A switching roller finger follower, including: a body including a locking barrel arranged to receive pressurized fluid; a first chamber partially enclosed by the body; at least one arm rotatably connected to the body; and a locking mechanism. The locking mechanism includes: a locking pin at least partially disposed in the first chamber; and a shuttle assembly including a shuttle pin and a check valve. The shuttle pin: is at least partially disposed in the locking barrel; includes a through-bore in communication with the first chamber; and is displaceable, in response to the pressurized fluid, to engage and disengage the locking pin with the at least one arm. The check valve is arranged to enable flow of the pressurized fluid through the through-bore to the first chamber.

Switching roller finger follower with rapid transition from locked to unlocked mode and method thereof

A switchable finger follower, including an inner lever and an outer lever. The outer lever is mounted for pivoting movement to the inner lever. A coupling device is located on one of the inner or outer levers and has a coupling pin arranged to move between a locking position, in which the inner and outer levers are connected together for movement in an activation direction, and an unlocked position, in which the inner lever is pivotable relative to the outer lever. A coupling projection is located on the other of the inner or outer lever. The coupling pin engages beneath a coupling surface of the projection in the locking position, and a stop surface of the projection contacts a second stop surface on the one of the inner lever or the outer lever. The second stop surface is located on a removable shim that is replaceable for lash adjustment.

Switchable finger follower with lash adjustment shim

A valve train of an internal combustion engine with a switchable hydraulic lash adjuster (SHLA) is provided, including a cylinder head having a boss, with an opening defined in the boss. The SHLA is located in the opening, and the SHLA includes: an outer housing having an inner bore, an inner housing movably located in the inner bore of the outer housing, and including a spring retainer at an outer end thereof, and a plunger assembly with a hydraulic lash adjuster mechanism movably located in a bore of the inner housing. A lost motion spring is located between the spring retainer and a spring seat located around the boss. This arrangement reduces the overall packaging length of the SHLA in that only a fraction of the lost motion spring's installed height has an influence on the overall length of the SHLA.

A bearing assembly, including a housing with a first circumferentially disposed groove; a bearing including an outer race with a second circumferentially disposed groove; and a retaining ring disposed within the first and second circumferentially disposed grooves. A method of retaining a bearing, including: locating a first portion of a ring within a groove in an outer race; installing a housing radially about the race to contact the race; locating a second portion of the ring within a groove in the housing; bringing temperature of the housing and the race to a first level; fixing, with contact between the race and the housing, the race with respect to the housing; increasing the temperature of the housing and race to a second higher level; creating a radial gap between the housing and the outer race; and fixing, with the retaining ring, a position of the race with respect to the housing.

The invention relates to a hydraulic support element for valve drive of a combustion engine, with a pot cylindrical casing and a hollow cylindrical piston guided axially movably therein, the inner end of which is supported via a spring on the bottom wall of the casing, whose outer end projects past the outer margin of the casing and is formed as a hemispherical bearing head, and whose inner space is subdivided by means of a partition element into an axially inner supply-pressure space and an axially outer switching-pressure space.

A camshaft assembly, including a camshaft phaser with: stator; rotor including first plurality of circumferentially aligned ramps; and second plurality of circumferentially aligned ramps offset from the first plurality of ramps in a first axial direction; first and second wedge plates radially disposed between the rotor and the stator; and camshaft non-rotatably connected to the rotor. In a drive mode: the stator is arranged to receive first torque and to rotate in a first direction; the assembly is arranged to operate in successive cycles of a first phase followed by a second phase; in the first phase the first wedge plate non-rotatably connects the stator and the rotor while the second wedge plate is rotatable with respect to the stator; and in the second phase, the second wedge plate non-rotatably connects the stator and the rotor while the first wedge plate is rotatable with respect to the stator.

A mass compensating shaft drive for compensating forces or moments of inertia of a reciprocating piston internal combustion engine is provided having a balance shaft supported by at least one journal in a housing of the internal combustion engine. A rolling bearing is located between each of the at least one journals and the housing. The balance shaft includes an oil gallery that is adapted to be connected to a source of pressurized lubricating oil. A check valve is located between the oil gallery and each of the at least one bearing journals, with the check valve being arranged to open upon at least one of a lubricating oil pressure or a centrifugal force generated through rotation of the balance shaft exceeding a predetermined closing force for the check valve.
