A surgical instrument includes an end effector configured to clamp tissue, a motor configured to actuate the end effector, and a controller in communication with the motor and configured to determine a stress and strain of the tissue, identify a tissue type of the tissue based on the determined stress and strain of the tissue, and set an operational parameter of the surgical instrument based on the identified tissue type of the tissue.

Powered surgical instruments and methods of identifying tissue types therewith

A surgical device includes an end effector and a handle assembly operably coupled to the end effector. The end effector includes an anvil assembly and a cartridge assembly pivotally coupled to one another. The cartridge assembly includes a staple cartridge, a cartridge carrier, and a strain gauge. The cartridge carrier includes an elongated support channel configured to receive the staple cartridge, the elongated support channel defined by an inner first surface and a pair of inner second surfaces. The inner first surface includes a recess defined therein, and the strain gauge is disposed within the recess. The handle assembly includes a power-pack configured to receive sensor data from the strain gauge of the end effector and to control a function of the end effector in response to the sensor data.

A surgical device includes a handle assembly having a controller; a first motor; and a second motor. The surgical device also includes an adapter assembly having: a tubular housing defining a longitudinal axis having a proximal end portion configured to couple to the handle assembly, and a distal end portion; a first actuation assembly disposed within the tubular housing and coupled to the first motor; and a second actuation assembly disposed within the tubular housing and coupled to the second motor. The surgical device further includes an end effector configured to couple to the distal end portion of the adapter assembly. The end effector is coupled to the first actuation assembly that articulates the end effector about an articulation axis that is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis. The end effector also includes a flexible drive beam coupled to the second actuation assembly and movable axially by the second actuation assembly. The controller is configured to maintain an initial articulation position of the end effector in response to axial movement of the flexible drive beam.

Adaptive anti-twitch algorithm for powered surgical devices

A staple cartridge is adapted to enhance cell migration towards a wound site when staples are placed in tissue. In order to enhance cell migration, the staples in the staple cartridge are adapted to create an electrical potential within the tissue in the area of a wound or cut line. More specifically, the staples are arranged in spaced rings, wherein the staples in the spaced rings are formed of dissimilar metals having different anodic indexes to create a voltage gradient in the tissue to enhance cell migration toward the cut line.

A handle assembly includes a trigger assembly, a motor, and a drive assembly. The trigger assembly includes a trigger, a head portion, and a deflection member interconnecting the trigger and the head portion such that a load applied to the trigger causes the deflection member to flex to define a gap between the trigger and the head portion. The motor is configured to be activated based on a size of gap defined by the trigger and the head portion. The drive assembly includes a clamping gear, a firing gear assembly, a drive gear, and a rack. When a button of the trigger assembly engages the clamping gear, actuation of the trigger advances the rack by a first distance, and when the button engages the firing gear assembly, actuation of the trigger advances the rack by a second distance greater than the first distance.

The present disclosure relates to systems and methods of detecting a tissue property during a laparoscopic surgical procedure with a tissue property sensing device. The method may include positioning a sensing assembly disposed along a distal portion of a tissue property sensing device about target tissue in a body cavity, inflating a bladder to compress and occlude blood flow of the target tissue, sensing a pressure measurement of pressure in the bladder and a light amplitude measurement of light projected through the target tissue, and determining a systolic blood pressure of the target tissue based on the pressure measurement and the light amplitude measurement.

A surgical stapling device includes an end effector and a handle assembly operably coupled to the end effector. The end effector includes an anvil assembly and a cartridge assembly. The surgical stapling device also includes a specimen bag adhered to both the anvil assembly and the elongated support channel of the cartridge assembly. The specimen bag includes a drawstring within a drawstring housing. Once the surgical stapling device is inserted into a patient's body and the anvil assembly and the cartridge assembly are open, a tissue specimen is placed into the specimen bag. The anvil assembly and the cartridge assembly are then closed on the tissue specimen and the surgical stapling device is fired. The specimen bag then separates from the surgical stapling device and both the surgical stapling device and the specimen bag are removed from the patient.

A surgical instrument includes a handle portion, a shaft coupled to the handle portion, a pair of jaw members operably coupled to the shaft, an inflatable member, and a sensor. The inflatable member is associated with one of the jaw members and is configured to apply pressure to tissue disposed between the pair of jaw members. The sensor is associated with one of the jaw members and is configured to measure local perfusion pressure in the tissue disposed between the pair of jaw members.
