In an example implementation, a portable computing device may alternate between scanning for tactile input, such as a user's finger on a trackpad, and scanning for wireless input, such as a near field communication (NFC) signal. If tactile input is received, the portable computing device may stop scanning for wireless input while the portable computing device continues to receive the tactile input. When the portable computing device stops receiving the tactile input, the portable computing device may return to alternating between scanning for tactile input and scanning for wireless input. If wireless input is received, the portable computing device may stop scanning for tactile input while wirelessly communicating with the device from which the wireless input was received. When the portable computing device is finished wirelessly communicating with the device, the portable computing device may return to alternating between scanning for tactile input and scanning for wireless input.

Touch scanning and wireless scanning in a portable computing device

A touch screen and machine-implemented method for providing a touch screen panel are provided. The touch screen is formed on a panel including a display area and a bezel area that at least partially surrounds the display area. The touch screen includes a first pattern of conducting material arranged on the display area of the panel and a second pattern of conducting material arranged on the bezel area of the panel, where the first pattern of conducting material is transparent.

A trackpad device includes a top surface, a capacitive sensor operably coupled to the top surface, a resistive sensor disposed below the capacitive sensor and at least one controller operably coupled to the capacitive sensor and to the resistive sensor. The at least one controller and the capacitive sensor are configured to detect one or more objects on the top surface. The at least one controller and the resistive sensor are configured to detect the one or more objects on the top surface independent of the detection by the at least one controller and the capacitive sensor. The at least one controller is configured to determine locations of the one or more objects on the top surface using information from the detection by the at least one controller and capacitive sensor and information from the detection by the at least one controller and the resistive sensor.

A computing device may include a sensor controller configured to control operations of a human-touch capacitive sensor module, a near-field communication (NFC) controller configured to control operations of an NFC module, and/or a plurality of communication lines including a first communication line and a second communication line. Each of the first and second communication lines may be connected to the sensor controller and the NFC controller such that control signals are transferred between the sensor controller and the NFC controller to synchronize the operations of the human-touch capacitive sensor module and the operations of the NFC module.

In one general aspect, a method can include receiving a plurality of indicators of interactions of a user with a plurality of locations of a touch-sensitive surface of an input area included in a base portion of a computing device. The method further includes receiving a plurality of indicators of pressure associated with at least a portion of the plurality of interactions, selecting a first interaction profile based on a first portion of the plurality of indicators of interactions and based on a first portion of the plurality of indicators of pressure, associating a first input mode with the first portion of the plurality of indicators of interactions based on the first interaction profile. The method still further includes associating a second input mode with a second portion of the plurality of indicators of interactions based on a second interaction profile different from the first interaction profile.

Computer with unified touch surface for input

A touch screen device and a method for constricting the touch screen device are provided. In some aspects, the touch screen device includes a transparent substrate. The touch screen device includes a first masking layer applied to an outer perimeter of an inner surface of the transparent substrate. The touch screen device includes a transparent conductor for a touch sensor applied to at least a portion of the first masking layer and a portion of the inner surface of the transparent substrate. The touch screen device includes a second masking layer applied to at least a portion of the transparent conductor on an inner surface of the first masking layer. The portion of the transparent conductor is arranged between the first masking layer and the second masking layer.

Masking an outer perimeter of a touch screen

Trackpad apparatus and computing devices including trackpad apparatus are disclosed. In an example implementation, a trackpad apparatus includes a capacitive touch-sensing pattern disposed on a top surface of the trackpad apparatus and a capacitive pressure-sensing pattern disposed below the capacitive touch-sensing pattern. The trackpad apparatus also includes at least one controller. The at least one controller and the capacitive touch-sensing pattern are collectively configured to detect location-specific reductions in charge coupling in the capacitive touch-sensing pattern resulting from charge being shunted out of the capacitive touch-sensing pattern by one or more electrically conductive objects being placed in electrical contact with the top surface of the trackpad apparatus. In the example trackpad apparatus, the at least one controller and the capacitive pressure-sensing pattern are collectively configured to detect location-specific changes in charge coupling in the capacitive pressure-sensing pattern resulting from pressure being applied to the top surface of the trackpad apparatus.

A tactile sensor includes a plurality of first sensing elements that are arranged in a plurality of rows on a first layer and a plurality of second sensing elements that are vertically aligned in a plurality of columns on the first layer. The second sensing elements in each column are electrically connected together and each of the plurality of columns are separate conductors from one another. The plurality of second sensing elements include a plurality of vertical elements that form an interlocking pattern with the plurality of first sensing elements.

Sensor pattern for a tactile input device

A method for calibrating a touch sensor panel including a plurality of touch electrodes is provided. The method includes determining, for each of the plurality of touch electrodes, a contribution in terms of capacitance to a total capacitance of the touch sensor panel; and allocating a fraction of a fixed period of time for measuring a capacitance of each of the plurality of electrodes based on the electrode's contribution to the total capacitance.
