In some examples, an insert assembly includes an insert, a rivet, and a washer configured to position on a brake disc. The insert is configured to position within a disc slot of the brake disc. The rivet shank is configured extend through a washer hole of the washer and a rivet slot of the insert to secure the insert to the brake disc. The washer is configured to be positioned between the insert and a rivet head of the rivet when the rivet shank extends into the brake disc. The rivet slot is configured to allow for the motion of the insert relative to the rivet in the tangential direction when torque is imparted through the disc slot via the insert. In some examples, the rivet is a solid rivet. In some examples, the rivet head is an orbitally riveted head fabricated using an orbital riveting tool.

Brake disc insert assembly

In some examples, a drive insert comprises a clip and a retainer. The clip is configured to be slidable over a surface adjacent to a drive slot of a brake disc in a tangential direction of the brake disc. The retainer is configured to be slidable over the clip when the clip is positioned over the surface to secure the clip to the brake disc. In some examples, the clip may comprise a body section and first and second arms extending from the body section. The retainer may comprise first and second legs configured to contact the first arm and the second arm of the clip when the retainer is positioned over the clip. The first and second legs may be resiliently biased to provide an inward clamping force on the clip when the retainer is positioned over the clip.

In some examples, a drive insert comprises a first clip, a second clip, and a retainer. The first clip is configured to be slidable over a first surface adjacent to a first drive slot of a brake disc in a first tangential direction of the brake disc. The second clip is configured to be slidable over a second surface adjacent to a second drive slot of the brake disc in a second tangential direction of the brake disc. The retainer is configured to be slidable over the first clip and the second clip when the first clip and second clip are positioned one the brake disc secure the first and second clips to the brake disc.

In some examples, an assembly includes a vehicle wheel that defines an interior and an exterior surface, where the interior surface defines a first protrusion and a second protrusion. The first protrusion defines a first aperture extending in a substantially axial direction. The assembly further includes a rotor drive key on the interior surface, the drive key defining a first and second feature, and the first feature defines a second aperture extending in the substantially axial direction and is configured to align with the first aperture. The assembly includes a fastener configured to be inserted through the first and second aperture in the substantially axial direction to attach the key to the interior surface of the wheel, where the second aperture is configured to form a threaded connection with an end of the fastener. When the fastener is tightened via the threaded connection, the second feature engages the second protrusion.

Rotor drive key assembly

A braking system may include a plurality of independently activatable groups of brake actuators, which may allow the braking force applied to a brake disc stack to be modified, e.g., in response a type of braking event. In some examples, a braking system comprises a brake assembly that includes a brake stack and a plurality of brake actuators. Each brake actuator may be configured to compress the brake stack when the brake actuator is activated. The braking system may further comprise a processor configured to detect a first type of braking event and, in response, activate a first number of brake actuators to compress the brake stack. The processor may further be configured to detect a second type of braking event and, in response, activate a second number of brake actuators to compress the brake stack, the first number being less than the second number.

A method of mounting a hubcap on a wheel that involves providing a wheel having an annular hub surrounding an axis of rotation, the hub including a first periphery extending along the circumference of a circle surrounding the axis of rotation and a second periphery spaced from the circumference of the circle, providing a hubcap having a top wall and a cylindrical sidewall extending from the top wall, the cylindrical sidewall having an end edge spaced from the top wall and a circumferential flange projecting from the cylindrical side wall, the circumferential flange having a sidewall and an alignment tab projecting from the sidewall, aligning the hubcap alignment tab with the second periphery, placing the hubcap sidewall against the hub and the alignment tab over the second periphery, and clamping the hubcap to the wheel.
