A mobile device is capable of being carried by a user and directed at a target object. The mobile device may implement a system to dimension the target object. The system, by way of the mobile device, may image the target object to and receive a 3D image stream, including one or more frames. Each frame may include a plurality of points, where each point has an associated depth value. Based on the depth value of the plurality of points, the system, by way of the mobile device, may determine one or more dimensions of the target object.

A modular ruggedized protective case for a mobile communications device is disclosed. In embodiments, the protective case includes a flexible (e.g., rubberized) primary housing partially enclosing the mobile device and itself partially surrounded or enclosed by a rigid secondary housing. The secondary housing includes a removable sidewall conformable and contourable to the housing to protect and conceal connector ports for a peripheral keyboard. The sidewall may be detached from the secondary housing to allow the keyboard to be connected to the mobile communications device via the connector ports, eliminating the need for an external adapter attached to the secondary housing.

A smart device and method for certified sterilization of personal computing/communications devices (e.g., smartphones, tablets, phablets) and other like personal effects provides an interior sterilization chamber fully or partially enclosed by a housing. The smart device includes an object tray or receptacle situated within the chamber for sterilization of any objects secured therein. Within the sterilization chamber, illuminators direct ultraviolet-C (UV-C) or other like disinfecting radiation at the external surfaces of the object according to a predetermined sterilization cycle or program. The selected sterilization cycle is executed by controlling the activation and/or articulation of the illuminators and/or the object tray or receptacle (either or both of which may be articulated to maximize the irradiated surface area of the object). When a sterilization cycle is complete, the control processors generate a unique token memorializing the successful completion of the cycle upon the sterilized object (e.g., a uniquely identified mobile device).

A system for volume dimensioning via two-dimensional (2D)/three-dimensional (3D) sensor fusion, based in a tablet, phablet, or like mobile device, is disclosed. The mobile device includes a 2D imager for capturing an image stream of its field of view (FOV), the FOV including target objects. The mobile device includes a 3D imager for collecting 3D imaging data of the FOV including point clouds of each target object within the FOV. Processors of the mobile device positively identify a particular target object by correlating the 2D and 3D image streams and generating a holographic model of the target object overlaid on the video stream, with adjustable surface, edge, and vertex guides. The processors determine the precise dimensions of the target object by measuring the holographic model, and detect and decode object identifiers (2D or 3D) on the surface of the target object to acquire and supplement object data.

An isolating connector device for connecting a mobile device to a vehicle-based network or device while protecting the mobile device from shock or impact to the vehicle includes a nearside housing and farside housing connected by a shielded cable, the farside housing engaging with the vehicle-based network via USB or cable port. The nearside housing also includes embedded magnets and spring-loaded guide pins to removably secure the nearside housing to the mobile device or its protective case and maintaining the docking connection. In a first aspect, embodiments of the inventive concepts disclosed herein are directed to a ruggedized protective case for a tablet, smartphone, or other like mobile communications or computing device. The case may include a rigid inner housing shielding the reverse face of the mobile device and a flexible, rubberized outer housing including reinforced impact-absorbing corners. The case may include a kickstand/easel hingedly attached to the rear inner housing, positionable by a user for holding the mobile device at any desired angle to a substantially horizontal surface.

An apparatus for connecting a mobile device to a vehicle-based network includes a USB or similar accessory connector enclosed in a protective housing. The connector housing may include a Bluetooth or similar wireless connector for establishing a wireless link between the mobile device and the vehicle-based network via the USB port. The connector housing may include a hinged panel allowing access to the USB connector while open, and securing the USB connector to a USB port of the mobile device while closed. The connector housing may include a flexible impact absorber for isolating the connector from shocks or vibrations conducted by the vehicle mount by which the mobile device is mounted to a dashboard or interior surface of the vehicle.
