Provided is a method, and pharmaceutical composition, to treat or prevent cyanide poisoning and/or methylmercaptan poisoning comprising administering to a subject in need an effective amount of tetrathionate by intramuscular injection or by intranasal administration. Also provided is a method for detecting the presence of tetrathionate in a sample by reacting it with cyanide and measuring the resulting thiocyanate with ferric nitrate.

Rapid method to measure cyanide in biological samples

An endoscopic swept-source Fourier Domain optical coherence tomographic system (FDOCT system) for imaging of tissue structure includes a Fourier Domain mode locked (FDML), high speed, narrow line-width, wavelength swept source, an OCT interferometer having a sample arm, a reference arm, a detection arm, and a source arm coupled to the swept source, an endoscopic probe coupled to the sample arm, and a data processing circuit coupled to the detection arm. The swept source includes a long optic fiber functioning as a cavity, a high optical gain lasing module, and a tunable narrow bandwidth bandpass filter for wavelength selection combined to form a unidirectional ring laser cavity, where the tunable narrow bandwidth bandpass filter is driven synchronously with the optical round-trip time of a propagating light wave in the cavity.

Endoscopic long range fourier domain optical coherence tomography (LR-FD-OCT)

A fiber-optic bundle based optical coherence tomography (OCT) probe method is demonstrated in a multimode optical fiber bundle based OCT system. The system can achieve a lateral resolution of 12 &#x3bc;m and an axial resolution of 10 &#x3bc;m using a super-luminescent diode source. This imaging approach eliminates any moving parts in the probe and has a primary advantage for use in extremely compact and safe OCT endoscopes to image internal organs and great potential to be combined with confocal endoscopic microscopy.

Optical coherent tomographic (OCT) imaging apparatus and method using a fiber bundle

A system and method for a directional audio train signaling system that comprises a receiver for receiving a signal indicating the approach of a train to a point of interest and one or more directional audio transmitter systems for transmitting a warning related to the approach of a train. A plurality of directional audio transmitters may be used, each with a footprint covering a portion of a roadway approaching an intersection. The receiver may be associated with an acknowledgement transmitter such that a train system confirms receipt of the alarm signal at the receiver.

Directional audio train signaling system and method

A device and method utilizes a broadband diffuse optical spectroscopy (DOS) system to dynamically calculate the concentrations of multiple chromophores in vivo using a non-invasive probe. The device and method permit dynamic monitoring of multiple in vivo tissue chromophores non-invasively with sensitivities necessary for effective therapeutic monitoring. The device includes a probe containing first and second source optical fibers as well as first and second detector optical fibers. The probe is placed adjacent to a sample of interest and detects reflected light which is passed to a proximally located detector and spectrometer. The concentrations of multiple chromophores are determined in real time. In a preferred embodiment, the multiple tissue chromophores include at least two of methemoglobin (MetHb), deoxyhemoglobin (Hb-R), oxyhemoglobin (Hb-O), water (HO), and methylene blue (MB). The device and method can be used quantify and monitor methemoglobin formation in subjects suffering from methemoglobinemia.
