A method of producing a custom color particulate toner for use in a two-component developer by mixing two or more component color toners. The component color toners are each surface treated with a blend of two or more types of silica particles, which differ in the functional groups appended to them. The silica blend for each component color toner is chosen so that, when the component color toners are mixed together to form the custom color mixture, they will all tribocharge to the same charge-to-mass ratio when mixed with a carrier to form a developer.

Development systems and methods for developing using chemically prepared toners are disclosed. The present invention further discloses developers used in development systems. The use of chemically prepared toners with hard magnetic carrier particles with a non-magnetic, cylindrical shell for transporting developers provides excellent benefits with respect to image quality by reducing granularity and by providing a typically constant, stable developer life as shown by the consistent level of charge to mass over time during operation.

A process for forming non-spherical toner particles by limited coalescence comprises: forming an organic phase comprising a polymeric material, a pigment, a quaternary ammonium tetraphenylborate salt, a phosphonium salt polymer formed by condensation of at least one dicarboxylic acid or dicarboxylic ester monomer with at least one diol monomer, at least one of the acid or ester monomers including a triarylphosphonium salt group, and a water-immiscible liquid; dispersing the organic phase in an aqueous phase containing a solid colloidal stabilizer; forming a suspension of small droplets of the organic phase in the aqueous phase by high shear agitation; removing the water-immiscible liquid from the small droplets, thereby forming a suspension of small solid particles in the aqueous phase; and separating and drying the solid particles, which are toner particles having a non-spherical shape.

A method for the preparation of polymer particles comprising the steps of: a) forming an organic phase by dissolving a polymer material in a solvent; b) dispersing the organic phase in an aqueous phase comprising a particulate stabilizer and homogenizing the resultant dispersion, thereby forming spherical particles having a selected particle and uniform particle size distribution; c) following the homogenizing, adding a particle shape-modifying surface active material to the spherical particles; and d) removing the solvent, thereby producing irregularly shaped polymer particles having substantially the same selected particle size and particle size distribution as that of the spherical particles.

The method involves dissolving in ethyl acetate a hyperdispersant selected from SOLSPERSE.RTM. 24000 and SOLSPERSE.RTM. 20000, thereby forming a solution; mixing the solution with a polymer material to form an organic phase; dispersing the organic phase in an aqueous phase containing a particulate stabilizer and homogenizing the resultant dispersion; evaporating the solvent; and washing and drying the resultant product.
