Wearable devices for sensing neuromuscular signals using a small number of sensor pairs are disclosed. One example wrist-wearable device includes eight pairs of neuromuscular-signal sensors. Each pair of neuromuscular-signal sensors is positioned over a portion of a wrist of a user while the wrist-wearable device is worn by the user. Each pair of neuromuscular-signal sensors further includes a first and second electrodes configured to be used as a differential sensor of neuromuscular signals travelling through the wrist of the user, and electrical signal-processing circuitry configured to amplify and filter neuromuscular signals received from the first and second electrodes to produce processed neuromuscular signals. The wrist-wearable device also includes a shared ground electrode configured to ground both the first and second electrodes. The processed neuromuscular signals are provided to one or more processors that are configured to analyze the processed neuromuscular signals to detect one or more gestures.

Systems, articles, and methods that integrate photopolymer film with eyeglass lenses are described. One or more hologram(s) may be recorded into/onto the photopolymer file to enable the lens to be used as a transparent holographic combiner in a wearable heads-up display employing an image source, such as a microdisplay or a scanning laser projector. The methods of integrating photopolymer film with eyeglass lenses include: positioning photopolymer film in a lens mold and casting the lends around the photopolymer film; sandwiching photopolymer film in between two portions of a lens' applying photopolymer film to a concave surface of a lens' and/or affixing a planar carrier (with photopolymer film thereon) to two points across a length of a concave surface of a lens. Respective lenses manufactured/adapted by each of these processes are also described.

Systems, articles, and methods for integrating holographic optical elements with eyeglass lenses

Wearable electronic devices that employ one or more contact sensors (e.g., capacitive sensors and/or biometric sensors) are described. Contact sensors include electromyography sensors and/or capacitive touch sensors. Capacitive touch sensors include single-frequency capacitive touch sensors, recently-proposed swept frequency capacitive touch sensors, and a generalized version of swept frequency capacitive touch sensors referred to as multi-frequency capacitive touch sensors. The contact sensors are integrated into various devices, including generic watchstraps that may be substituted for the existing watchstrap in any wristwatch design, generic watch back-plates that may be substituted for the existing back-plate in any wristwatch design, and wearable electromyography devices that provide gesture-based control in a human-electronics interface.

Systems, devices, and methods to perform alignment in a projector are described. Laser light emitted is directed to at least one lens, which directs the laser light to a diffractive optical element (DOE), which produces a diffracted light. A sensor measures a property of the diffracted light, and a position of at least one lens adjusted to improve a quality of the diffracted light. The lens is fixed in position to the improvement in the quality of diffracted light achieving a defined threshold. The characteristic may include brightness.

Systems, devices, and methods for aligning a lens in a laser projector

Wearable electronic devices that employ techniques for routing signals between components are described. An exemplary wearable electronic device includes a set of pod structures with each pod structure positioned adjacent and physically coupled to at least one other pod structure. The set of pod structures includes multiple sensor pods and at least one processor pod. Each sensor pod includes an on-board sensor to in use detect user-effected inputs and provide signals in response to the user-effected inputs. The signals are serially routed via successive ones of adjacent pod structures by respective communicative pathways until the signals are routed from the sensor pods to the processor pod. A processor on-board the processor pod processes the signals. Systems, articles, and methods for routing electrical signals and/or optical signals, including analog signals and/or digital signals, between pod structures are described.

Systems, articles and methods for signal routing in wearable electronic devices that detect muscle activity of a user using a set of discrete and separately enclosed pod structures

Systems, devices, and methods are disclosed for enabling private communication between head-mounted displays. A first user dons a first head-mounted display. The first head-mounted display authenticates that the first user is authorized to view information displayed by the first head-mounted display. In response to positive authentication, the first head-mounted display displays the information to the first user. The first user inputs a selection command via an input interface, such as, for example, gazing at particular information, to select some of the displayed information. The first head-mounted display generates a message based on the user selection, which may be encrypted by the first head-mounted display prior to transmission. The first head-mounted display transmits the message to a second head-mounted display, such that the second head-mounted display displays the message to an eye of a second user wearing the second head-mounted display.

Private eye-to-eye communications with wearable heads up display

Systems, devices and methods that enable a user to access and interact with content displayed on a portable electronic display in an inconspicuous, hands-free manner are described. There is disclosed a completely wearable system comprising a wearable muscle interface device and a wearable head-mounted display, as well as methods for using the wearable system to effect interactions between the user and content displayed on the wearable head-mounted display. The wearable muscle interface device includes muscle activity sensors worn on an arm of the user to detect muscle activity generated when the user performs a physical gesture. The wearable system is adapted to recognize a plurality of gestures made by the user and, in response to each recognized gesture, to effect one or more interaction(s) with content displayed on the wearable head-mounted display.

Systems, devices, and methods that enable sophisticated and inconspicuous interactions with content displayed on a head-mounted display are described. A head-mounted display includes an eye-tracker and the user also carries/wears a wireless portable interface device elsewhere on their body, such as a ring. The wireless nature of the portable interface device enables a small and unobtrusive form factor. The portable interface device includes an actuator that, when activated by the user, causes the portable interface device to wirelessly transmit a signal (e.g., a radio frequency signal or a sonic signal). A selection operation performed by the user is defined as the user activating the actuator of the portable interface device while the user is substantially concurrently gazing at a displayed object (as detected by the eye-tracker). In response to the selection operation, the head-mounted display displays a visual effect to the user.
