Described herein is an application-to-friend data service for constructing and maintaining an application-to-friend index. The data service has a first service component that is triggered when an end-user opens an application. The first service component performs operations to update the database table with current data concerning other end-users who are friends of the end-user on whose behalf the data service has been invoked. The data service includes a second service component to receive and process a query by efficiently returning, for a given end-user and a given application, a list of connections or friends of the given end-user who are also end-users of the application.

Technique for constructing and maintaining an application-to-friend index

Functionality is disclosed herein for integrating a program code marketplace and a service provider network. A program code marketplace system is configured to provide a program code marketplace through which developers or other users can list program code for sale. Program code offered through the program code marketplace may have an associated execution environment definition that defines an execution environment for the program code. A request may be received to deploy program code available through the program code marketplace to a service provider network for execution. In response thereto, the execution environment definition may be utilized to create an execution environment in the service provider network. The program code may then be deployed to the execution environment in the service provider network for execution. The program code marketplace may integrate with other systems, such as a payments system, for processing micropayments for program code available through the program code marketplace.

An application and first application metadata are received, and the application is scanned to identify second application metadata. The first and second application metadata are added to a search index corresponding to a plurality of applications offered via an application marketplace system. A server system that hosts an electronic catalog of digital content items uses behavioral data to predictively select digital content items to proactively deliver to mobile devices of users. The digital content items may, for example, include mobile applications, mobile application components or add-ons, e-books, music tracks, and/or videos. An application component that runs on the mobile devices caches the proactively delivered content items in anticipation that they will be requested by the associated users. In some embodiments, the system supports off-line purchases of cached digital content items such that a user can purchase cached digital content items on the mobile device when no network connection is available.

Disclosed are various embodiments for taking measurements associated with the execution of an application on one or more client devices. A measurement policy and/or a transmission policy may be defined by a developer with associated with an application. The measurement policy and/or transmission policy may be used by the one or more client devices in taking measurements, aggregating measurements into measurement collections, and/or transmitting measurements. The measurements may be used in the derivation of statistical information.

Mobile application analytics

Metrics data is generated and gathered based on users' use of mobile device applications. The metrics data may be cached by a mobile app store client on the users' mobile devices before being transmitted to a network application system which may be associated with an electronic catalog through which users can download mobile applications. The network application system may store user metrics information, aggregate that information, and perform analysis of the information. Resulting data may be displayed to users visiting product detail pages for mobile applications. The system may also generate reports to application developers based on how the users of their applications are interacting with the applications.

System for collecting and exposing usage metrics associated with mobile device applications

This disclosure is directed to providing notifications to mobile devices, which may piggy-back on other communications exchanged between a mobile device and one or more servers. By piggy-backing, or otherwise adding small amounts of additional data to routine communications, the mobile device may avoid polling the server for notifications of pending messages for the mobile device or reduce a frequency of polling for the notifications. When polling is used to supplement the piggy-backing, a frequency of the polling may be based on a variable threshold amount of time.

Application message management

Mobile device applications may be developed and distributed which include abbreviated, content-based references for one or more network resources. Network resource references may be identified by a native shell running on a mobile device, and a network resource lookup may be performed in order to resolve the network resource reference to the network resource. This allows for dynamic access to network-accessible resources such as catalog services, metric services, and advertising services. A mobile application may provide in-app access to such resources without requiring the application's developer to include detailed application programming interface functionality specific to a particular network resource.

The added functionality may, for example, enable end users to make in-application purchases of content items from an application store. Disclosed are various embodiments for evaluating application compatibility with computing devices. A set of applications is determined and then filtered to exclude those applications which are incompatible with a particular client. The filtering is performed by determining a capability set for the client and performing an evaluation of a compatibility expression for each application using the capability set to determine whether each application is compatible with the client. The filtered set of applications is returned and may be used in user interfaces associated with an application marketplace system.

Evaluating application compatibility

This disclosure describes systems and associated processes for generating recommendations for users based on usage, among other things. These systems and processes are described in the context of an interactive computing system that enables users to download applications for mobile devices (such as phones) or for other computing devices. Users' interactions with applications once they are downloaded can be observed and tracked, with such usage data being collected and provided to the interactive computing system. The interactive computing system can include a recommendation system or service that processes the usage data from a plurality of users to detect usage patterns. Using these usage patterns, among possibly other data, the recommendation system can recommend applications to users for download.

Personalized recommendations based on item usage

A network application system provides mobile devices with personalized recommendations of applications based at least in part on the device resources of the mobile devices. Device resources may be detected through an interrogation process performed on the mobile device by a mobile application store client, and/or may be determined based on metadata information contained in a photograph file taken by the mobile device and transmitted to the network application system. The network application system gathers crash data based on incidences of applications crashing on mobile devices in order to detect incompatibilities between applications and device resources. The system may then update application requirements data so that users are not presented with applications likely to crash on their mobile devices. The system may also inform an application's developer of a detected incompatibility so that a new, compatible version may quickly be available to users.

In accordance with preferred embodiments of the invention, a method (and corresponding apparatus) is provided for deducing the location of one or more items or objects to be monitored. In exemplary embodiments, the method (and corresponding apparatus) is implemented in RFID (radio frequency identification) applications (e.g., reading RFID tags at 13.56 MHz and approximately 900 MHz) by deducing the location of an item associated with a unique RFID tag in one or more areas of detection covered by multiple RFID reader antennae.

Hosted applications are developed to be run in a hosted network environment and with access to host resources such as server databases and messaging systems. The host applications may include tag based requests for host resources. A platform-specific native host is used on a mobile device which interacts with a hosted application and identifies content-based request for host resources. The native host then determines and performs appropriate functionality in the context of a mobile platform to satisfy the host resource request. Hosted applications may thereby be run natively on mobile devices of various mobile platforms and accessed even when the mobile devices lack network connections.

A cross-platform software development kit and related services supports the use of platform-generic mobile applications across a variety of mobile platforms. These generic applications may consist of and be developed in a purely content-based format, without requiring any binary files to be distributed alongside a generic content application. Such applications may access platform-specific resources of a mobile device using generic device resource request tags. A platform-specific native shell running on a mobile device accesses a generic content application and identifies device resource request. In response, the platform-specific native shell performs platform-specific functionality associated with the requested device resource.
