Lockable knobs for a rotary control of a device are described, wherein the control may be set at a specific setting via the knob without being susceptible to accidental disruption of the setting during use or transport of the device. Generally the device features: a spindle that is coupled to the rotary control via a set screw; a locking base with teeth that is stationary coupled adjacent to the spindle; and, a locking nut that may be positioned over the spindle, wherein the nut is configured to electively interact with the teeth of the base to prevent or allow rotation of the spindle.

Lockable knob and related methods

Techniques are disclosed for computing distance-to-fault (DTF) in communication systems. The techniques can be embodied, for instance, in a DTF system that provides a multi-port probing device and DTF functionality, including computing distances to faults and the fault magnitudes. In addition, the DTF system is further configured with the ability to accurately measure complex reflection coefficient of the UUT, and/or return loss of the UUT. The complex reflection coefficient and/or return loss of the UUT can be computed as a function of known scattering parameters of a multi-port measurement circuit included in the probe of the DTF system.

Distance-to-fault measurement system capable of measuring complex reflection coefficients

A digital wireless communication system for increasing the number of users capable of communicating over a network permits multiusers to transmit information simultaneously on the same channel of frequency. The primary example of such a system would be that employing radio frequency transmissions, even optical transmissions; however, the invention will also apply to magnectic detections such as in the reading of information stored on a magnetic tape. It is possible to increase overall throughput in terms of total number of bits transmitted through the shared medium by all users of a multiple access system if the signals are allowed to interfere. The present invention provides a multiuser detection process and apparatus that is capable of pulling apart signals in heavy interference in real time by combining the signals received from two or more spatially seperated collectors or antennas. The present invention includes the step of taking more measurements of the received signal from two separate collections prior to definition of the multiuser algorithm parameters and combining the different collection of signals as one signal for multiple user detection processing.

The present invention is a digital communication method that increases the overall throughput of a Multiuser Detection (MUD)-based co-channel multiple access (MA) system in terms of the total number of bits transmitted through the shared medium by all the users of the MA system if signals are allowed to interfere. The total number of users can be increased if more dimensions are used for assigning the transmitted signals and the same dimensions are measured at the receiver. Specifically, the present invention does not require any coordination among transmitters but simply requires a transmitter to send its signal with either a randomly chosen polarization ellipse, or an assigned or randomly chosen amplitude level.

System and method for increasing throughput in a multiuser detection based multiple access communications system

A calibration system is provided for calibrating frequency domain reflectometers in the field by using both the scattering parameters of the multi-port junction determined at the factory and changing the offset and gain terms used in generating a complex reflection coefficient by using internal calibrated loads so that heavy, cumbersome external calibrated transmission lines are not required. In one embodiment the internal calibrated loads include RLC circuits and in another embodiment the internal calibrated loads include attenuators. Further, retesting or recalibration does not necessitate reconnecting the cable under test, which may remain connected to the reflectometer's test port throughout the procedure.

Method and apparatus for calibrating a frequency domain reflectometer

An algorithm is provided for a frequency domain reflectometer which takes into account both attenuation per unit length of transmission line and phase shift per unit length of transmission line in a modified Inverse Fourier Transform that converts a frequency domain complex reflection coefficient into a more accurate time domain reflection coefficient so that the distance to a fault can be readily determined.

Algorithm for estimation of multiple faults on a transmission line or waveguide

A digital receiver automatically detects and non-coherently demodulates a multiplicity of interfering digitally modulated signals transmitted simultaneously at approximately the same carrier frequency. The receiver includes one or more antenna inputs (e.g., polarization and/or space diverse), a parameter estimator module, and a multiuser detector for estimating the data transmitted by each interfering signals and adapted to operate with at least one of a MUD algorithm with partially quantized prior information and a MUD algorithm based on prewhitened data.

Co-channel interference receiver

A multi-port junction is used in combination with an Inverse Fourier Transform to detect distance to fault in an RF transmission line or waveguide without the use of heterodyne down-conversion circuits. To provide an ultra-wide bandwidth frequency domain reflectometer the output ports of the multi-port junction are used to calculate distance to fault and return loss. The Inverse Fourier Transform algorithm is modified to take into account both phase shift per unit length of the transmission line and attenuation per unit of length in the transmission line, with the output of the modified Inverse Fourier Transform being applied to a module that subtracts out the effect of previous faults by solving for the distances ahead of time before knowing amplitudes and for solving for amplitude at each prior fault starting with the first fault. The output of this module is then used thresholded to remove the effects of noise, secondary reflections and inconsequential peaks. The result is a time domain waveform in which peak positions indicate the distance to real faults and in which return loss or percent reflection is calculated for each of the faults. Moreover, internal calibration loads and specialized processing are used to effortlessly calibrate the reflectometer in the field.

Method and apparatus for transmission line and waveguide testing

A Parameter Estimator for accurately estimating signature responses of multiple co-channel interfering digital transmission signals. The Parameter Estimator is used in a Multiuser Detection (MUD) Receiver to significantly reduce the error rate. The Parameter Estimator comprises a plurality of software components, including a Signature Waveform Estimator, Training Sequence Locator, Noise Estimator, Active Users Tester, Initial Transformation Matrix Builder, a Transformation Matrix Rebuilder, and a Transformation Matrix Selector, and generates an estimated noise power, a training sequence index and estimated signature waveforms.
