An ultrasonic welding system that includes an ultrasonic transducer configured to convert electricity to generate ultrasonic waves, wherein the waves propagate along a first direction from the transducer; and a sonotrode that includes a single-component body having nodal and anti-nodal regions, and configured to propagate ultrasonic waves received at a nodal region along a first direction; a plurality of redirecting features formed in the body and configured to cause received ultrasonic waves propagating along the first direction to propagate along a second direction, perpendicular to the first direction, upon encountering one or more of the redirecting features; wherein the body is further configured to stretch and compress along the second direction based on corresponding peaks and valleys of the waves propagating along the second direction; and at least one ultrasonic welding surface at an anti-nodal region of the body configured to oscillate based on the stretching and compressing, wherein opposing ends of the sonotrode comprise the nodal region, at least one of the opposing ends configured to receive the ultrasonic waves.

A closed-loop machining system that includes a rotating spindle assembly having a body, a tool holder connected to the body, an ultrasonic machining module connected to the tool holder, and a power supply for powering the module; a processor for controlling the operation of the closed-loop machining system; a safety and compatibility bridge linking the ultrasonic machining module to the processor, wherein the safety and compatibility bridge further includes an electrical connection between the ultrasonic machining module and the processor; and at least one microprocessor located in or associated with the ultrasonic machining module for enabling and processing communication between the ultrasonic machining module and the processor.

A method and apparatus for sealing films. In one embodiment the sealing device comprises a horn and an anvil. The film has a standard portion and an increased portion. Increased energy is applied to the film in the increased portion compared to the energy applied to the standard portion. Such a method allows for sealing of varying number of layers.

Ultrasonic sealing of packages

For use with the technique of transversely aligning the transducer in an ultrasonic welding assembly, the presently disclosed principles provide a unique ultrasonic sonotrode for use in ultrasonic welding assemblies having such a transversely aligned transducer. In one embodiment, an exemplary ultrasonic sonotrode comprises a body having nodal and anti-nodal regions, and configured to propagate ultrasonic waves received at a nodal region along a first direction. Such an exemplary sonotrode may further comprise a plurality of redirecting features formed in the body and configured to cause received ultrasonic waves propagating along the first direction to propagate along a second direction, perpendicular to the first direction, upon encountering one or more of the redirecting features. In such embodiments, the body is further configured to stretch and compress along the second direction based on corresponding peaks and valleys of the waves propagating along the second direction. Such a sonotrode may also include at least one ultrasonic welding surface at an anti-nodal region of the body configured to oscillate based on the stretching and compressing.

A machining system that includes an ultrasonic machining assembly, wherein the ultrasonic machining assembly further includes a machining tool; a collet adapted to receive the machining tool; and an ultrasonic transducer, wherein the ultrasonic transducer is operative to transmit acoustical vibrations to the machining tool; and a machining apparatus, wherein the machining apparatus is adapted to receive and secure the ultrasonic machining assembly, and wherein the machining apparatus is operative to transmit torque to the machining tool by applying rotary motion to the ultrasonic machining assembly.

Ultrasonic machining assembly for use with portable devices

A device for use in a machining system, including an ultrasonic transducer, wherein the ultrasonic transducer is adapted to receive a tool bit; a housing adapted to be both compatible with the machining system and to receive the ultrasonic transducer, wherein the housing is operative to isolate all radial and other vibrations generated by the ultrasonic transducer except the axial vibrations transmitted to the tool bit; and a tool holder, wherein the tool holder and the top portion of the housing are mechanically coupled to one another.

An ultrasonic welding assembly, comprising a sonotrode, wherein the sonotrode further includes at least one welding region and at least one node adjacent to the welding region; a mount for supporting the sonotrode, wherein the mount further includes a force application region; at least one ultrasonic transducer connected to the sonotrode for transmitting acoustic vibrations to the at least one welding region; at least one roller connected to the sonotrode in a flexible manner for permitting rotation of the sonotrode about its axis; a device for maintaining axial alignment of the sonotrode relative to a target welding area; and a low-friction bearing in contact with the at least one node for the application of force thereto, wherein the at least one low-friction bearing is connected to the mount.

System for enhancing sonotrode performance in ultrasonic additive manufacturing applications

An ultrasonic welding assembly, comprising: a sonotrode having a single welding region and two nodal regions formed on either side of the welding region; a mounting plate for supporting the sonotrode having a force application region on the upper surface thereof; at least one ultrasonic transducer connected to the sonotrode; at least one diaphragm spring disposed between the ultrasonic transducer and the sonotrode; at least one roller bearing connected to the diaphragm spring; at least two linear guides connected to the roller bearing, wherein the at least two linear guides are connected to the mounting plate and support the roller bearing and the sonotrode in a flexible manner; and first and second low-friction linear bearings in contact with nodal regions for the application of downward force to the sonotrode, wherein the first and second linear bearings are connected to the mounting plate.
