A data retrieval device for communicating between a downhole location within a wellbore () and a surface location () in which a downhole to surface telemetry system is installed and adapted to communicate between a first telemetry module and a second telemetry module with the second telemetry module () positioned downhole and connected to a string () positioned within the wellbore (). The data retrieval device is provided with a housing adapted to be positioned inside the string; a communication device supported by the housing; a connection port positioned on the housing and adapted to be connected to a line; and an electronic module supported by the housing. The electronic module is in communication with the communication device and is adapted to store and use at least an identification parameter of the first telemetry module to intercept a signal transmission addressed to the first telemetry module from the second telemetry module () via the communication device.

Data retrieval device for downhole to surface telemetry systems

A downhole electromagnetic telemetry unit for use with a tubing string () includes an insulated electrically conductive member () and a processing unit (). The insulated electrically conductive member () is electrically coupled to the tubing string () at an upper measuring point () and a lower measuring point (). The processing unit () is configured to process a voltage difference measured between the upper measuring point () and the lower measuring point () across the insulated electrically conductive member () and to derive therefrom a signal transmitted from a surface location ().

Apparatus for receiving and transmitting signals in electromagnetic telemetry system used in a wellbore

An EM antenna for location on a pipe () surrounded by a casing (). The antenna has a power source () for injecting a current across a first insulated section () of the pipe () and an electrode () for conducting the current from the pipe () to the casing (). There is also a second insulated section () of the pipe arranged to operate together with the electrode () and first insulated section () for directing a path flow of the current. Such antennas are described both in relation to repeater arrangements as well as land and sea applications.

Downhole telemetry system

A technique is provided to facilitate gravel packing in a well. A conduit surrounded by a screen is deployed in an isolated lower wellbore region. The conduit cooperates with one or more valves that can be selectively opened to relieve wellbore pressure resulting from advancement of the beta wave during the gravel packing procedure. A control system enables dependable and timely opening of the one or more valves to relieve wellbore pressure and protect the surrounding formation.

System and method for controlling wellbore pressure during gravel packing operations

Various technologies described herein involve apparatuses for actuating a downhole tool. In one implementation, the apparatus may include a pressure sensor for receiving one or more pressure pulses and an electronics module in communication with the pressure sensor. The electronics module may be configured to determine whether the pressure pulses are indicative of a command to actuate the downhole tool. The apparatus may further include a motor in communication with the electronics module. The motor may be configured to provide a rotational motion. The apparatus may further include a coupling mechanism coupled to the motor. The coupling mechanism may be configured to translate the rotational motion to a linear motion. The apparatus may further include a valve system coupled to the coupling mechanism. The valve system may be configured to actuate the downhole tool when the valve system is in an open phase.

Downhole actuation tools

A technique is provided to control operation of well tools deployed in a wellbore. The technique utilizes a completion with at least one well tool actuated by fluid input. An electronic trigger system is associated with each well tool and is designed to respond to a unique series of pressure pulses. Upon receiving the unique series of pressure pulses, the electronic trigger system actuates to enable flow of actuating fluid to the well tool for operation of the well tool.

System and method for controlling actuation of tools in a wellbore

Pressure control in an isolated lower wellbore annulus, defined by a conduit sealably positioned within an isolated lower wellbore segment, is achieved while gravel packing by sensing the pressure within the isolated lower annulus while gravel packing and admitting fluid from the isolated lower annulus into the conduit at one or more discrete locations along the conduit when the sensed pressure corresponds to one or more threshold pressure conditions. The annulus pressure is sensed while gravel packing using a pressure-sensitive device disposed in the annulus, e.g., positioned by the conduit at a high-pressure location. The pressure-sensitive device actuates one or more valves carried along the conduit to admit fluid from the annulus into the conduit at one or more of the discrete locations, and thereby control the pressure in the isolated lower annulus.
