A MODMAN modem manager unit in an aviation broadband satellite terminal has a media interface slot integrated into the MODMAN. The media interface slot is exclusively dedicated to interface an external storage device. The external storage device is configured to be attached to or removed from the dedicated media interface slot, and the dedicated media interface slot is configured to allow transfer and storage of instructions and data specific for an APM Aircraft Personality Module via said dedicated media interface slot onto an attached external storage device. When interacting with the MODMAN via the dedicated media interface slot, the attached external storage device is configurable to act as dedicated APM in said aviation broadband satellite terminal.

Modular broadband terminals that allow for the connection of a plurality of different modems are provided. The modular broadband terminals include a main connector board having common interfaces. The modems have specific interfaces that may be different from the common interfaces and from others of the modems. Each modem can connect with a converter adapter board that is configured to couple the modem with the common interface.

Systems and methods are described for outputting audio information via both wired and wireless outputs from a in-flight or in-vehicle entertainment system. An audio output device can include a wireless transmitter and an audio output port. A transmission power of the wireless transmitter can be controlled via a processor based on a measured received signal strength indicator (RSSI) level of a connected slave device and a transmission power of the connected slave device.

Telecommunication systems for aircraft and other vehicles are described having one or more antennas with a plurality of modular, radiating elements disposed about and coupled to a central element. Each of the plurality of modular, radiating elements comprises transmitting and receiving elements. The antenna may be mounted to an adapter plate along with another antenna of similar construct.

A telecommunications antenna system for use with an aircraft is described that includes an aperture that is mounted at an angle relative to the horizon plane that does not change during system operation. Additional angle of elevation for adjustment of azimuth is provided by electronic means, such as a Rotman lens, while rotation within the horizon plane is provided by a rotating mechanism. Also disclosed is a radome for use with such an antenna system, which is provided dimensioned to accommodate the at a large value of the mounting angle and which can be trimmed to accommodate the system at smaller values of the mounting angle in order to minimize the impact on aircraft aerodynamics.
