To simplify fabrication of an integral hub piece, the opening between the upper and lower female cones in this hub has sufficient width or radial dimension to allow access to both cones from one side of the hub with the cutting tool. A cutting tool is used which has a width smaller than the opening between the cones. Preferably, the tool has a width which is about equal to or smaller than an angular dimension through this opening which is defined by extending surfaces of the upper and lower female cones. If this limitation is satisfied, both cones can be created with a single machine set up operating from one side of the integrated hub.

Methods of machining a single piece hub with integral upper and lower female cones includes providing a single piece hub with upper and lower conical voids having respective narrow ends proximal each other and respective wide ends distal each other. Surfaces of the voids are machined using a tool provided from a single side of the hub that is dimensioned to fit through an opening defined by the interface between the narrow ends of the conical void. The tool can be moved parallel to a rotational axis for accessing conical surfaces of both voids and perpendicular to the rotational axis while contacting the surfaces so as to produce a final machined surface.

A disc drive spindle motor includes a fixed member coupled to the chassis, and a rotor rotatable about the fixed member for rotating a magnetic storage disc in the contaminant free cavity. A bearing, which may be a hydrodynamic bearing, ball bearing or other bearing type, interconnects the fixed member and the rotor, and supports the rotor for rotation relative to the fixed member. A simple condensation seal is supported from either the fixed member or the rotor, adjacent the bearing opening where outgassing may occur. The seal incorporates a cooling surface which is supported from either the hub/rotor or the fixed member adjacent the region where outgassing occurs; the surface preferably should be wavy, or fin shaped to provide a maximum surface area for better heat transfer and better cooling effect, so that the surface is relatively cooler than the surrounding operating environment. The surface is shaped and made of a material, e.g. aluminum, and of a thickness to optimize the heat transfer characteristics, so that the hot volatile products of the outgassing phenomenon will condense when they come in contact with the condensation seal surface.

A bimetallic part is formed from metals or comprises metals with different thermal expansion coefficients. A first element defines the part and defines one surface of the bearing gap and has a first coefficient of expansion and a second element is wholly or partially inserted into and constrained within the first element and having a different coefficient of thermal expansion so that as the temperature changes, the stress created by the differential expansion of the two elements will cause the overall part to deform elastically as a function of temperature. This deformation will cause the gap, the elements being properly selected, to narrow as temperature rises (and viscosity falls) and to widen as temperature falls (and viscosity rises).

Thermal compensation for fluid dynamic bearing using bimetal parts
