An electric meter is disclosed. The electric meter comprises a first set of conductive paths configured to connect a first phase of an electric distribution power source, a first phase of a first distributed energy resource device, a first phase of a second distributed energy resource device, and a first phase of a load. The electric meter comprises a second set of conductive paths configured to connect a second phase of the electric distribution power source, a second phase of the first distributed energy resource device, a second phase of the second distributed energy resource device, and a second phase of the load. Also disclosed is a method of use of the electric meter and an electric meter system.

Multi-port meter

An edge computing device may control load devices and DER (distributed energy resource) devices. The edge computing device may be associated with an electric meter located at a premises or with a distribution transformer located at a secondary substation. The control of the load devices and DER devices may be based in part on forecasted pricing information that considers factors such as equipment ratings for distribution equipment, environmental conditions, historical patterns of generation and load, and user input.

Distributed control of energy storage device charging and grid stability

An electric meter includes a housing, a first set of connection paths, and a second set of connection paths. The first set of connection paths couple to a meter socket and are electrically coupled to a first electrical connection path between first phases of an electric distribution power source, a distributed energy resource device, and a load. First electrical metrology components of the first electrical connection path are positioned within a first segment of the housing. The second set of connection paths couple to a meter socket and are electrically coupled to a second electrical connection path between second phases of the electric distribution power source, the distributed energy resource device, and the load. Second electrical metrology components of the second electrical connection path are positioned within a second segment of the housing that is non-overlapping with the first segment of the housing.

Meter for use with a distributed energy resource device

A method for providing data to a group of devices on a pallet includes: positioning a set of NFC antennas at different locations around a perimeter of the pallet, each antenna of the set of NFC antennas being configured to surround the pallet; broadcasting, by an NFC reader/writer utilizing the set of NFC antennas, an identification command simultaneously to the group of devices on the pallet, each device of the group of devices including an NFC tag storing a unique ID indicator; receiving, by the NFC reader/writer, unique ID indicators from each device of the group of devices that receives the identification command, transmitting, by the NFC reader/writer, individual commands to each device of the group of devices to enable energy harvesting by the NFC tag. The energy harvested by each device provides power to operate a processor and a nonvolatile memory of the device in a low power mode.

Firmware update for a pallet of devices

A meter collar includes a connection path to form an electrical connection between a distributed energy resource (DER) meter and line voltage wirings of an electric distribution system and a second connection path to form an electrical connection between the DER meter and neutral wires of the electric distribution system, a DER device, and a load. Further, the meter collar includes a third connection path within the meter collar to form an electrical connection between the DER meter and output voltage wirings of the DER device. Furthermore, the meter collar includes mating connectors electrically connected to a first end of a corresponding connection path to accept mating connectors of the DER meter. The meter collar also includes mating connectors electrically connected to a second end of the corresponding connection path to mate with the line voltage wirings, the neutral wires, and the output voltage wirings.

Systems for electrically connecting metering devices and distributed energy resource devices

An electric meter socket includes a first connection path within the electric meter socket to form a first electrical connection between a distributed energy resource (DER) meter and line voltage wirings from an electric distribution system. The electric meter socket further includes a second connection path within the electric meter socket to form a second electrical connection between the DER meter and neutral wires of the electric distribution system, a DER device, and a load. Additionally, the electric meter socket includes a third connection path within the electric meter socket to form a third electrical connection between the DER meter and output voltage wirings of the DER device. Further, the electric meter socket includes a DER connector positioned on a side of the electric meter socket to receive the output voltage wirings of the DER device and to electrically couple the output voltage wirings to the third connection path.

Meter and socket for use with a distributed energy resource device

An electric meter includes: a plurality of connectors configured to form electrical connections to corresponding plurality of receptacles in an electric meter socket, wherein at least one electrical connection to the plurality of receptacles is formed with a neutral wire; and a plurality of measurement devices configured to measure electrical characteristics of voltage and current waveforms provided to the electric meter from an electric distribution system and a distributed energy resource (DER) device via the plurality of connectors. The neutral wire provides an electrical reference point for measurement of the voltage waveforms.

Methods and systems for connecting and metering distributed energy resource devices

An electric meter socket includes: a first plurality of connection points within the electric meter socket configured to form electrical connections to line voltage wirings of an electric distribution system; a second plurality of connection points within the electric meter socket configured to form electrical connections to output voltage wirings of a DER device; one or more connection points within the electric meter socket configured to form an electrical connection of neutral wires of the electric distribution system, the DER device, and a load; and a plurality of receptacles, each of the plurality of receptacles electrically connected to a corresponding connection point and configured to accept a mating connector of an electric meter.

A DER (distributed energy resource) device includes a metrology module and a communications module. The metrology module monitors the output of the DER device and the communications module provides bidirectional communications across a communications network to control the DER device. The control of the DER devices may include commands to connect the DER device to the grid, to disconnect the DER device to the grid, to connect the DER device to the premises, or to adjust a power characteristic of the output of the DER device.

Metering and communications for distributed energy resource devices

A utility meter has a multiprocessor architecture including (i) a microprocessing unit (MPU) for executing multiple software applications and (ii) another processing unit for performing core metrology functions in real time. For instance, the utility meter includes a metrology engine, an MPU, and one or more metrology applications. The metrology engine measures consumption of a resource and generates consumption data based on the consumption of the resource. The metrology engine includes a metrology processor, a dedicated memory, and a real-time operating system run by the metrology processor to enable the metrology engine to run time-critical metrology functions in real time. The MPU is coupled to the metrology processor and includes one or more processor cores. The MPU runs the one or more metrology applications over a primary operating system of the MPU, and the one or more metrology applications utilize the consumption data.

A method described herein is performed by a utility meter lacking an integrated display. The method includes measuring consumption of a resource and, further, generating consumption data based on measuring the consumption of the resource. Via a communication device, the utility meter wirelessly connects directly to an external device having a display. The utility meter verifies that the external device is authorized to access the utility meter. The utility meter transmits the consumption data to the external device to utilize the display of the external device as an interface to the utility meter. The utility meter receives an instruction via manual entry at the display of the external device, and the utility meter executes the instruction.
