Errors in data retrieved from a storage medium are corrected by retrieving a plurality of data blocks and a plurality of redundancy blocks associated with the plurality of data blocks from the storage medium. One or more data blocks retrieved from the storage medium having errors are identified and removed. When the number of data blocks identified as having errors is less than the number of retrieved redundancy blocks, one or more excess redundancy blocks are removed, and one or more retained redundancy blocks are kept from the retrieved redundancy blocks. One or more new redundancy blocks are generated based on the retrieved data blocks. One or more residual blocks are generated based on the one or more new redundancy blocks and the one or more retained redundancy blocks. One or more data blocks identified as having errors are corrected using the generated one or more residual blocks.

Correcting data using redundancy blocks

Errors in data retrieved from a storage medium are corrected by retrieving a plurality of data blocks from the storage medium. A plurality of redundancy blocks associated with the plurality of data blocks are also retrieved from the storage medium. The number of data blocks with errors from the plurality of data blocks retrieved from the storage medium is determined. When the number of data blocks with errors exceeds the number of redundancy blocks, the data blocks are corrected in data segments, where a data segment includes data from a portion of each of the plurality of data blocks retrieved from the storage medium.

Correcting data having more data blocks with errors than redundancy blocks

A decoder to correct errors in data includes a plurality of cells. Each cell generates a partial syndrome based on data blocks and one or more redundancy blocks. Each cell generates a partial error value based on a portion of an inverse of an error location matrix that identifies locations of any data blocks having errors. A summation logic connected to the plurality of cells generates an error value based on the partial error values generated by the plurality of cells.
