A cutting tool insert for machining by chip removal includes a body of a hard alloy of cemented carbide, cermet, ceramics, cubic boron nitride based material or high speed steel, onto which a hard and wear resistant coating is deposited. The coating includes at least one polycrystalline nanolaminated structure having sequences of alternating A and B layers, wherein layer A is (AlMel)Nwith 0.3&#x3c;x1&#x3c;0.95, 0.9&#x3c;y1&#x3c;1.1 and Me1 is one or more of the elements Ti, Y, V, Nb, Mo, Si and W, or Me1 is Ti and one or more of the following elements Y, V, Nb, Mo, Si, Cr and W, and layer B is (ZrSiMe2)Nwith 0&#x3c;x2&#x3c;0.30, 0.90&#x3c;y2&#x3c;1.20, 0&#x2266;z2&#x3c;0.25 and Me2 is one or more of the elements Y, Ti, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, W and Al.

Nanolaminated coated cutting tool

A cutting tool insert for machining by chip removal includes a body of a hard alloy of cemented carbide, cermet, ceramics, polycrystalline diamond or cubic boron nitride based materials onto which a hard and wear resistant coating is deposited by physical vapour deposition (PVD). The coating includes at least one layer of a NaCl-structured (TiAlCrMe)(CON) where Me is one or more of the elements Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Mo, W and/or Si, 0.10&#x3c;a&#x3c;0.60, b+d&#x3e;0.20, c&#x3e;0.05, 0&#x2266;d&#x3c;0.25, 0.75&#x3c;x&#x3c;1.05, 0&#x2266;y&#x3c;0.25 and 0&#x2266;z&#x2266;0.25 with a thickness between 0.5 and 10 &#x3bc;m. The layer has a columnar mictrostructure with an average columnar width of &#x3c;1 &#x3bc;m, a compressive stress level of &#x2212;6 GPa&#x3c;&#x3c3;&#x3c;&#x2212;0.5 GPa and a nanohardness &#x3e;25 GPa.

Coated cutting tool insert

A cutting tool insert for machining by chip removal includes a body of a hard alloy of cemented carbide, cermet, ceramics or cubic boron nitride based material onto which a hard and wear resistant coating is deposited by CVD. The coating includes at least one multitextured &#x3b1;-AlOlayer with a thickness between 0.5 &#x3bc;m and 30 &#x3bc;m characterized with an ODF texture index&#x3e;1 and at least two dominant texture components with 2&#x3c;ODF density&#x3c;100 coexisting within the layer. A method of making and using the cutting tool insert are also described.

Alumina layer with multitexture components

A cutting tool insert for machining by chip removal comprising a body of a hard alloy of cemented carbide, cermet, ceramics or cubic boron nitride based material onto which a hard and wear resistant coating is deposited by CVD, and the methods of making and using the same. The coating includes at least one &#x3b1;-AlOlayer with a thickness between 0.5 &#x3bc;m and 40 &#x3bc;m having a {01-15} and/or {10-15} texture exhibiting excellent wear and metal cutting performance.

Textured alumina layer

A cutting tool insert for machining by chip removal includes a body of polycrystalline cubic boron nitride compact (PCBN), either as a solid insert or attached to a backing body, onto which a hard and wear resistant PVD coating is deposited. The coating includes a polycrystalline nanolaminated structure of alternating A and B layers, where layer A is (Ti,Al,Me1)N and Me1 is one or more of the metal elements from group 3, 4, 5 or 6 in the periodic table, layer B is (Ti,Si,Me2)N and Me2 is one or more of the metal elements from group 3, 4, 5 or 6 in the periodic table including Al with a thickness between 0.5 and 10 &#x3bc;m. The insert is particularly useful in metal cutting applications generating high temperatures, e.g., high speed machining of steels, cast irons, super alloys and hardened steels.

A cutting tool insert for machining by chip removal includes a body of a hard alloy of cemented carbide, cermet, ceramics, cubic boron nitride based material or high speed steel, onto which a hard and wear resistant coating is deposited by physical vapor deposition. The coating includes a polycrystalline nanolaminated structure of alternating layers A and B where layer A is (Ti,Al,Me1)N and Me1 is optionally one or more of the metal elements from group 3, 4, 5 or 6 in the periodic table, layer B is (Ti,Si,Me2)N and Me2 is optionally one or more of the metal elements from group 3, 4, 5 or 6 in the periodic table including Al with a thickness between 0.5 and 20 &#x3bc;m and method of making the same. This insert is particularly useful in metal cutting applications generating high temperatures with improved edge integrity, machining of super alloys, stainless and hardened steels.

The present invention relates to a cutting tool insert comprising a body of cemented carbide, cermet, ceramics, high speed steel (HSS), polycrystalline diamond (PCD) or polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PCBN), a hard and wear resistant coating is applied, grown by physical vapour deposition (PVD) such as cathodic arc evaporation or magnetron sputtering. Said coating comprises at least one layer of (ZrAl)N with of 0.45&#x3c;x&#x3c;0.85 and 0.90&#x2266;y&#x3c;1.30 with a thickness between 0.5 and 10 &#x3bc;m. Said layer has a nanocrystalline microstructure consisting of a single cubic phase or a mixture of hexagonal and cubic phases. The insert is particularly useful in metal cutting applications generating high temperatures with improved crater wear resistance.

Coated cutting tool for metal cutting applications generating high temperatures

A cutting tool includes a body of a hard alloy of cemented carbide, cermet, ceramics, cubic boron nitride based material or high speed steel and on which at least one of the functioning parts of the surface thereof, a hard and wear resistant coating is applied. The coating includes a polycrystalline laminar, multilayered structure of metal nitride compounds, in a repetitive form . . . MeN/(TiAl)N/MeN/(TiAl)N/MeN/(TiAl)N/MeN/(TiAl)N . . . of cubic structured (TiAl)N layers where 0.3&#x3c;x&#x3c;0.95 and cubic structured MeN layers where Me is one or more of the metal element Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Mo and Al. The laminated structure has a repeat period, &#x3bb;, of 5 nm&#x2266;&#x3bb;&#x3c;20 nm, a layer thickness relation of 1/10&#x3c;(d/d)&#x3c;1/3 and a thickness d&#x2267;1 nm that is essentially constant throughout its total thickness up to 20 &#x3bc;m. The coating hardens as a nanocomposite, adapting its strength during spinodal decomposition of (TiAl)N in cubic TiN and cubic AlN domains where the additional cubic structured MeN layers provides elements for locking a predominantly overall cubic coating structure thus suppressing the hexagonal AlN phase formation leading to improved high temperature metal cutting properties.

Multilayered coated cutting tool

A cutting tool insert includes a body of a hard alloy of cemented carbide, cermet, ceramics, cubic boron nitride based material or high speed steel. A hard and wear resistant coating, having at least one layer, to which an (Al,Cr)Olayer is applied. This insert is particularly useful for machining of steel and stainless steel. The coating with a total thickness of 2-20 &#x3bc;m has one or several layers, at least one of which is an (Al,Cr)Olayer with a thickness of 1-5 &#x3bc;m having a corundum phase crystalline structure and a composition (AlCr)Owith 0.4&#x2266;y&#x2266;0.6. The (Al,Cr)Olayer has a fiber texture with rotational symmetry in the direction of the coated surface normal to an inclination angle, &#x3c6;, of the basal planes relative to the coated surface normal or the inclination angle, &#x3c6;, for the highest peak in the pole plot with 70&#xb0; &#x3c;&#x3c6;&#x3c;90&#xb0; .

Oxide coated cutting insert

A cutting tool insert includes a body of a hard alloy of cemented carbide, cermet, ceramics, cubic boron nitride based material or high speed steel and a hard and wear resistant coating, including one or several layers, at least one of which is an (Al,Cr)Olayer. The coating, with a total thickness of 2-20 &#x3bc;m includes one or several layers, at least one of which is an (Al,Cr)Olayer with a thickness of 1-5 &#x3bc;m having a corundum phase crystalline structure and a composition (AlCr)Owith 0.5&#x2266;y&#x2266;0.7. The (Al,Cr)Olayer has a fiber texture with rotational symmetry in the direction of the coated surface normal with an inclination angle, &#x3c6;, of the basal planes relative to the coated surface normal or the inclination angle, &#x3c6;, for the highest peak in the pole plot with 20&#xb0;&#x3c;&#x3c6;&#x3c;55&#xb0;.

A cutting tool insert includes a body of cemented carbide, cermet, ceramics, cubic boron nitride based material or high speed steel and a hard and wear resistant coating including at least one metal nitride layer. The coating includes at least one layer of a thermally stabilized cubic structured (TiSiMe)N phase with 0.04&#x3c;x&#x3c;0.20 and 0&#x3c;z&#x3c;0.10, with a constant elemental composition throughout the layer where Me is one or more of the metal elements Y, Hf, Nb, Ta, Mo, W, Mn, Fe and Zn with a thickness of 0.5 to 10 &#x3bc;m. The layer is deposited using cathodic arc evaporation and is particularly useful for machining of stainless steel and super alloys.

Thermally stabilized (Ti,Si)N layer for cutting tool insert

A cutting tool insert includes a body of cemented carbide, cermet, ceramics, high speed steel (HSS), polycrystalline diamond (PCD) or polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PCBN), a hard and wear resistant coating is applied, grown by physical vapour deposition (PVD) such as cathodic are evaporation or magnetron sputtering. The coating includes at least one layer of (ZrAl)N with 0.05&#x3c;x&#x3c;0.30 with a thickness between 0.5 and 10 &#x3bc;m. The layer has a nanocrystalline columnar microstructure consisting of a single cubic phase or a mixture of hexagonal and cubic phases. The insert is particularly useful in metal cutting applications generating high temperatures with improved edge integrity.

A cutting tool insert is formed from a substrate selected from cemented carbide, cermet, ceramics, cubic boron nitride based material or high speed steel. The insert includes a hard and wear-resistant coating formed from laminar polycrystalline metal nitrides layers. The laminar polycrystalline metal nitrides layers have a repetitive form . . . A/B/A/C/A/B/A/C/ . . . with a total thickness of about 0.5 &#x3bc;m to about 5 &#x3bc;m.

Layered coated cutting tool

A cutting tool insert, particularly useful for machining of cast iron, comprising a body of a hard alloy of cemented carbide, cermet, ceramics, cubic boron nitride based material or high speed steel a hard and wear resistant coating; and at least (Al,Cr)Olayer applied to said body is disclosed. Methods of making a cutting tool insert are also disclosed. In addition, methods for machining of cast iron using the cutting tool inserts are disclosed.
