The present invention discloses schemes to perform load control taking uplink BLER statistics into account. An uplink load control method and apparatus are provided in a wireless communication system. The uplink load control method comprises estimating uplink load budget in a cell of the wireless communication system; determining whether the cell is over-loaded based on Block Error Rate (BLER) statistics of non-Guarded Bit Rate (non-GBR) users in the cell and/or Fast Congestion Control (FCC) action statistics in the cell; decreasing the uplink load budget if it is determined that the cell is over-loaded; and increasing the uplink load budget if it is determined that the cell is not over-loaded. Preferably, increasing or decreasing of the uplink load budget is based on the BLER stastics BLERof targeted users by FCC. By means of the BLER and FCC status, BLER of EUL users can be controlled in an acceptable range while maximizing the benefit of FCC in improving load utilization and consequently uplink throughput as much as possible. On the other hand, the uplink load control method can further comprises adjusting a RoT target RoT, based on BLER statistics of Guarded Bit Rate (GBR) users in order to increase load headroom available for non-GBR users in appropriate conditions without violating the performance of GBR users.

Uplink load control method and apparatus used in a wireless communication system

A controlling node () for UEs () in a cell in a communications system (), arranged to generate () and transmit () control commands to the UEs regarding their output power level, and to generate those control commands using either at least a first or a second power control scheme. In embodiments, the first power control scheme is a signal quality based power control scheme and the second power control scheme is a signal strength based power control scheme. In embodiments, the controlling node () is arranged to receive () from a network controlling node () information regarding the capabilities of at least one other controlling node () in the cellular communications system () with respect to which power control scheme or schemes that the other controlling node () is arranged to use.

Nodes and method for power control

Methods and devices for determining an available load in a cell of a cellular radio system are provided where the determination of the available load is made in response to an estimated inter cell interference load. An estimated inter cell interference is determined. The inter cell interference change events are monitored by determining when a User Equipment changes serving cell or when the User Equipment adds or removes a cell to the active set of the User Equipment. The determined inter cell interference is adjusted by an estimated load caused by the User Equipment causing an inter cell interference change event, and the available load is determined in response to the adjusted inter cell interference. The method can continuously update inter cell interference. Moreover, the update can be made fast and thereby allow an improved estimation of the available cell load.

Method and device for estimating available cell load

It is presented a method for selecting an output stream for bits of a bit set. The method comprises the steps of: obtaining indicators of how much transmission power is allowed to be used; calculating a maximum number of bits that can be provided to each one of the two output streams; determining which one of the two output streams is to be a primary output stream and which one of the two output streams is to be the secondary output stream. The primary output stream is then filled first and any surplus is provided to the secondary output stream. A corresponding user equipment, computer program and computer program product are also presented.

Method, user equipment, computer program and computer program product for selecting an output stream

Methods and devices to dynamically determine suitable cell-specific RoT limits are provided. The suitable cell-specific RoT limits can advantageously be set both with respect to a short time scale and a long time scale In accordance with some embodiments the long term time scale operation is based on UE measurements representative for the intended coverage area of the cell. In accordance with some embodiments the short term time scale operation is based on UE measurements from active User Equipments only. Furthermore, also receiver capabilities of and cell isolation to neighboring base stations can be considered in the long time scale operation.

Methods and devices for setting RoT limit

In a method and a device for setting the Transport Format Combination size step in a scheduler of a cellular radio system to be used by a user equipment transmitting data to a radio base station of the cellular radio system, the Transport Format Combination size step is set as a function of a number of pre-defined cell and/or user conditions. This will increase the user bit Crate at low load. Specifically, the time to reach a high bitrate in low load situations is reduced. This leads to enhanced user experience for bursty services such as World Wide Web (WWW) services.

Method and a device for increased bit rate

In a cellular radio system the power control status of a mobile station is used in the base stations to generate power control commands. Hereby a radio base station can select a power control method that is optimal for the situation at hand. This is obtained by communicating power control status to base stations or deriving power control status in a radio base station. The radio base station is adapted to select power control method based on the power control status. Thus, a base station can select the most suitable power control improvement method, even during soft handover, thereby making make use of the advantages of different types of power control improvement methods.

A power control applied to a radio network controller () when a user equipment () is in communication with a serving radio base station () and at least one other radio base station () involves the radio network controller () providing a quality representation of an uplink control channel () from the user equipment () to the serving radio base station (). The radio network controller () generates an updated power quality target for a reference control channel based on the quality representation and transmits the updated power quality target to at least one of the serving radio base station () and the at least one other radio base station (). Alternatively, the radio network controller () generates an updated power offset for the uplink control channel () relative a reference control channel based on the quality representation and transmits the updated power offset to the user equipment ().

Uplink power control

In a cellular radio system, the number of TDM users per cell is limited. The cellular radio system can be a WCDMA system and in particular a WCDMA system employing an Enhanced Uplink (EUL). Other users in the cell are scheduled using CDM scheduling.

Scheduling method

Random access coverage is assured while at the same time supporting high uplink data rates in a same service area served by a base station. A set of radio resources are shared by multiple mobile terminals for transmitting uplink to the base station including requests for access to service from the base station and transmissions for active connections with the base station. A first repeating time period and a second different repeating time period are defined. Uplink transmission grants are scheduled for active connections that permit use of a greater amount of the radio resources during the first repeating time period. Uplink transmission grants are also scheduled for active connections that permit use of a smaller amount of those resources during the second repeating time period. At least some random access requests to the base station are controlled to occur only during the second repeating time period.

Random access with full coverage on selected resources

A method for implementing power loop control at a RBS controlled by an RNC includes receiving an SIR target at the RBS which is determined by the RNC for a mobile station in communication with the RBS. In a first mode, one or more transmit power control commands are generated at the RBS for issuance to the mobile station based on the SIR target received from the RNC. In a second mode, one or more transmit power control commands are generated at the RBS for issuance to the mobile station based on an SIR target determined by the RBS for the mobile station instead of the SIR target received from the RNC. Also in the second mode, artificial mobile station connection quality information is reported from the RBS to the RNC so that the SIR target determined by the RNC is adjusted in accordance with the SIR target determined by the RBS.
