A system and a method for measuring the thickness of a layer of coating deposited on a substrate indirectly measures the thickness of the layer of coating on the substrate by measuring the thickness of layers of coating on a coating roller before and after the coating is transferred from the coating roller to the substrate. To measure the thickness of the layers of coating on the coating roller two sensors are used directed to respective layer on the coating roller. The sensors have IR radiators and IR detectors.

A non-foil packaging laminate for liquid food packaging comprises a core layer of paper or paperboard, outermost liquid tight, heat sealable layers of polyolefin and, applied onto the inner side of the layer of paper or paperboard, an oxygen gas barrier layer formed by liquid film coating of a liquid gas barrier composition and subsequent drying, the liquid composition containing a polymer binder dispersed or dissolved in a liquid medium. The present invention provides a method for producing a packaging laminate having excellent gas barrier properties. The method involves applying a solution or dispersion of starch or starch derivative to a surface of a substrate of paper or paperboard, and applying a layer of plastic to said starch or starch derivative so as to modify the properties of same such that the starch or starch derivative provides a gas barrier property.
