A stapler has a drive train that drives a stapling head toward a base part in a driving stroke and away from the base part in a return stroke. To accommodate thick workpieces to be stapled, without jamming, the drive train includes a coupling constructed so that its effective connection between coupled parts is releasable and so that it loses its effective connection during the driving stroke to prevent jamming.

Stapler

Stapler () which in the course of a reciprocating working stroke (V) staples a workpiece (), preferably a sheaf of papers, which stapler is powered by an electric motor which, via a transmission arrangement () drives the stapler during the working stroke, whereby the motor is activated and initiates the working stroke from a certain starting region as a result of the workpiece moving a trigger () which forms part of a trigger device () to a position at which a circuit-breaker (), which forms part of the same electrical circuit () as the motor is connected to, is closed by the trigger, and whereby a release arrangement () connected to, and operatively acted upon, by a rotating means () which forms part of the transmission arrangement moves the trigger during the return phase of the working stroke to a non-closing position at which the circuit-breaker returns to an open position, thereby breaking the electric circuit and deactivating the motor, with the result that the working stroke ends in the starting region, whereby the trigger (), when it has been moved to close the circuit-breaker () and the working stroke has been initiated by the force from a first elastic means (), remains in the position at which it closes the circuit-breaker.

Electrically powered stapler

A stapler comprises a stapling unit and a base movably connected to each other. The base comprises an anvil, a lower and an upper part with a contact surface which has a staple opening against which a workpiece is placed. The upper and lower parts are movably connected to each other. In operation, movement of the stapling unit and the base toward each other drives a staple into the workpiece, wherein the staple crown comes in contact with the workpiece and the staple legs extend through the staple opening. Upon movement of the upper part and stapling unit toward the lower part, the staple legs are bent by the anvil into contact with the underside of the workpiece. The anvil is attached to the base by an elastic element between the lower and upper part, and is urged toward the staple opening to block the opening when the stapler is in an initial position.

A clinching mechanism has an anvil composed of first ( ), second ( ) and third ( ) plates arranged in a spaced apart stack with the second plate ( ) positioned between the other two. The plates ( ) are mounted on a housing ( ) so as to be slidable relative thereto and the second plate is also connected to the first and third plates ( ) so as to be slidably movable relative to said first and third plates between a first aligned position in which at least one edge of the first, second and third plates ( ) are aligned to form and anvil face and a second retracted position in which the second plate ( ) is retracted from the anvil face. With the second plate in its aligned position, a staple to be clinched in received with its two legs ( ) on either side of the second plate ( ), the second plate operating to guide the legs ( ) into engagement with associated clinching device ( ) positioned between the first and second, and the second and third plates. Once the staple is located, the second plate ( ) is moved to its retracted position in which it is partially retracted from between the legs. The clinching device are then operated to fold the legs ( ) towards the staple crown and also urge the legs ( ) laterally towards each other, the retraction of the second plate ( ) permitting the legs ( ) to be clinched into close alignment with each other.

A stapler for driving staples into objects comprises an anvil element ( ) and stapling element ( ), which cooperates with the anvil element and which contains staples. The stapler further comprises a driver ( ), which is reciprocatingly arranged on the stapling element ( ) and which is arranged to drive a staple into the object in the direction of the anvil element. An operating element ( ) is arranged to reciprocate the driver ( ). The anvil element ( ) and the operating element ( ) are movable back and forth relative to the stapling element ( ) in one and the same path of motion. The anvil element ( ) and the operating element ( ) are movable relative to each other in this path of motion with the aid of reversible driving elements ( ). The inertia of the operating element ( ) against movement relative to the stapling element ( ) is greater than its inertia against movement relative to the anvil element ( ). The driving elements ( ) are adapted to be reversed, on the one hand, when in a first position the operating element ( ) cannot move the driver ( ) any further in its drive-in direction and, on the other hand, when in a second position it cannot move the driver ( ) any further in the opposite direction.
