A swing type structure for a head stack assembly of a disk drive includes a body portion, a coil portion, and at least one actuator arm structure. The actuator arm structure includes at least one elongated column, and a pair of wires in tension. The body portion has a bore defining a longitudinal axis, and the coil portion is cantilevered from the body portion. The elongated column is cantilevered from the body portion in an opposite direction from the coil portion and has a distal end. Each wire is positioned on an opposite side of the elongated column and converges on the distal end such that the elongated column is in compression as a result of the pair of wires.

A head stack assembly for a disk drive includes a swing-type structure, a head gimbal assembly, and a coil. The swing-type structure has a bore defining a bore axis. The head gimbal assembly is cantilevered from the swing-type structure to project radially away from the bore axis. The head gimbal assembly includes transducing structure for writing to and reading from the recording surface of a disk. The coil is cantilevered from the swing-type structure to project radially away from the bore axis in a direction opposite from the head gimbal assembly. The coil has a shape to provide a current flow path that includes first and second multi-leg portions that are spaced from each other in a direction parallel to the bore axis. Each of the multi-leg portions is generally C-shaped, substantially perpendicular to the bore axis, open at its end that is remote from the bore axis, and includes two radially-extending legs such that the current flow path provides four radially-extending legs with the four radially-extending legs being positioned such that upon installation of the head stack assembly into the disk drive the four radially-extending legs occupy an annular region in which a magnetic field distribution exists.

A spindle system is comprised or a journal and thrust air bearing. The journal bearing; has two sets of opposing groove areas. The thrust air bearing has two sets of spiral grooves. The thrust air bearing is gimballed to compensate for misaligment. A bias contact member is connected to the rotating member along the axis of rotation and provides electrical grounding, The spindle system is especially applicable to mounting recording disks in a data storage disk drive.

An integrated bearing and pump assembly is formed by positioning a hydrodynamic pump coaxially with respect to a hydrodynamic bearing. The integrated assembly provides pressurized fluid for use within the device incorporating the bearing. The hydrodynamic pump comprises a secondary hydrodynamic bearing incorporated into the primary bearing assembly. The secondary bearing is optimized for high flow pumping applications rather than the high pressure, zero flow requirements of the primary bearing. When the bearing assembly is rotated, fluid flow is provided.

A sleeve/rod type squeeze bearing system is disclosed in which the piezoceramic driving element is placed in compression to an extent that limits or eliminates stress reversals of the piezoceramic driving element during vibrating cycles. Eliminating or limiting stress reversals increases reliability of the bearing system and extends the useful life of the bearing elements. The bearing load of such a system may also be increased.

Prestressed cylindrical squeeze bearing member

A sleeve/rod type squeeze bearing system is disclosed in which the cross-sectional geometry of the piezoceramic bearing driving element is geometrically dissimilar to the cross-sectional geometry of the bearing element to which it is connected. The arrangement permits the cross-sectional geometries of both bearing elements and the piezoceramic driving element to be optimized to perform their intended functions.
